Abstract- Bun, Romance, 30 Year War misery level, dystopia vibes on destroyed world.

>Bonnie- Bun (1.25 meters tall), main love interest, a true survivor with a hopeful outlook, urban girl turned survivalist, tomboyish with relapses into girly girl, loves the idea of Americana and tries to make everything depression era to cope with her lost brother, Vox's niece. 16 years old
>Haxtra- Dragon (3 meters tall), close friend to Bonnie, dislikes Karl, more pessimistic but one day hopes to find a fellow dragon to love, extremely religious, had no real attachments on the pal. 22 years old.

>Karl(direct descendant of Anon from HSR for fun)- human (1.9 meters), abandoned conscript, hopeful, from a rural world but has no social skills but longs for a loving embrace, country religious, nerdy and tries to tie things to things he thinks is normal (they're not). 18 years old.
>Luke- Also an abandoned conscript but from an opposing faction, dragon (2.5 meters), metrosexual to the core, total socialite, hates Karl, uses charisma and social ability to gets what he needs without working for it. 20 years old.
>Vox- Bun, local community leader (self proclaimed count), well liked but not politically involved, like a father to Karl, Luke, and Bonnie, as each provided their uses but all have glaring issues and are very young, Bonnie's uncle. 47 years old.
>Soldier (name tbd)- A surviving bun soldier, ex-lover of Bonnie's brother, bi, alcoholic, hates all non-buns, blames Karl, Luke, Haxtra and God for his problems, alcoholic, jealous man. 28 years old.
>Priest (name tbd)- An old priest, widower, extremely protective of his community, tries to see the truth but is blind to his biases against Karl and actively distrusts Luke, mix of Southern Baptist and Greek Orthodox, very caring, a bit overweight and greying, very country. 72 years old.

Setting and Background.
Set 1000 years after the Founder dies (around 3100) and the last Emperor died without an heir leading to a four-way civil war/succession crisis between the three claimants and the republic. The civil war hit in the midst of the Andromeda Revolt where the Andromeda House declares itself independent of the Sentillian Empire. Both sides agree not to use anything worse than a nuke for "our shared history" however the far less populated Andromeda galaxy was on its heels when the civil war hit, but Andromeda was not the only front, there was also a massive war going on the Sculptor Galaxy between the Yetuch League and the Sentillians over colonies and trade. The Empire was already was already stretched thin fighting two galaxy sized fronts and the series were at their operational limit.
Regardless once the civil war begins between the 4 claimants the Yetuch and the Andromeda Rebels make massive gains in the confusion and capture almost the entirety of what remained of the 30, 40, 70, and 90 Series, a few dozen quadrillion men in total and the most veteran troops in the galaxy, these soldiers are then made to work for their respective captors, the 70 and 90 in Andromeda and 30 and 40 in Sculptor. the 1st, 10th, 20th, 50th, 60th, and 80th all take heavy losses and suffer enormous desertion and munity rates with most returning to their homes to build up their home planet's defenses, the 100th series being the smallest of the 11th and most specialized is totally destroyed with no chain of command remaining.
The claimants have no access to the planet destroying weapons as the Prefects of Destruction go into hiding along with the Scion and Amazon Clans.
None of the main characters know exactly who they were fighting for so explaining it is meaningless, but the three claimants are Princess Boudica who strives to be the first Empress, an aggressive lesbian who hates the church and seeks to empower the Electors, Prince Hadrian who seeks to continue the standard line of succession but is too young and inexperienced to rule but his Uncle Xavier seeks to help him attain the throne in memory of his father, then there's Lord Leopold who while is not of royal blood did marry the late emperor's eldest, Princess Anita, and seeks to establish his firstborn, "Prince" Gregory. The last faction is the Republic which is based around the "old core" of Earth and Mars and extends across the Orion Spur, it lacks the resources of the other factions but is effectively an unconquerable fortress manned by over a hundred generations of guards many of which can trace their linages back to famed heroes, proud families, or brutal rebels. Luke was unknowingly in the service of Boudica while Karl was in the service of Hadrian of which were fighting in Leopoldian Space.

The world of Vahk is a simple world, it *was* quickly urbanizing as the system it was in was between two nebula clusters, it was a natural chokepoint that kept the Leopoldian heartland safe. Rather than actually take the planet the Hadrianists just fucking level it from orbit, leveling ever Surface to Orbit defense system in the wake of a solar flare that knocked out the planet's power grid with enough conventional munitions to flatten a continent, however the Boudicans launch an attack on the Hadrianist fleet and the fighting shifts to the planet's surface to establish SOW systems but as the orbital battle rages on the Leopoldains mount a desperate assault of their own that results in every fleet retreating and the Leopoldains abandon the world of Vahk, its majority rabbit and rat population, the enemy troops, and pockets of loyal supports remain.
This takes place over the course of a year and about half of the Vahk's population dies of disease, famine, or the bombardment itself, this leaves Luke in a rather precarious situation as he's on a much shorter leash compared to Karl who was of the group that didn't flatten the planet.
Vahk lost a lot of its men, with about 10% being stationed in or in close proximity to the SOW systems almost all of those 10% being men between 16-25 or about 90% of their youth just up and died. A lot of girls lost their fiancées, boyfriends, and the dating pool kinda just went up in a puff of smoke, naturally when a bunch of young *alive* men get abandoned on the planet, the Hadrianists mainly from rural or hardy planets are well equipped to deal with the harsh environment being not all to different from the deserts, mountains, and dusty steppes they called home as Hadrian appealed more the the conservative frontiers while Boudica appealed to inner urban worlds while Leopold was more of a "local" popular figure. Many of the local bun and rat women quickly married the soldiers, well, the ones that knew what female attention looked like, not 18 year old nerds like Karl.
The story will be mainly about how Karl and Bonnie slowly bond over the first year of crops with Karl just going through the motions of what he did almost his entire life before he was dragged into a war he didn't know or care much about. Seeing the attention Karl is (unknowingly) getting from the makeshift town Luke grows envious and tries to steal back the spotlight and slowly he begins to get some of the few surviving bun males to hate Karl by bringing up negative stereotypes about humans namely the "Xenophile Harem" that a few rich and the strange "Islamic" humans practice. The priest begins to view Karl with distrust and he begins to preach about the importance of tradition. This backfires and hurts Luke and Haxtra as they are not mammals and the two begin to bond in their isolation.
Slowly Bonnie and Karl begin to bond more and more during the summer between their chores assigned by Vox and by just hanging out, Bonnie realizes her crush after Karl carves her a new crucifix after she loses her old one. Karl continues to keep his mouth shut but thinks Bonnie is cute. Towards the end of the summer a small group of survivors comes from the surrounding areas, one of them being a bun soldier, Bonnie's parents who lived in the city while she was sent to live with Vox in the opening days of the bombardment.
Her dad is missing a leg and her mother seems distant, the soldier that was with them immediately becomes distrustful of Karl, Luke, and Haxtra, of which he blames for the death of his lover, Bonnies dead brother.
One night during the harvest Bonnie tries to sneak out of the new shack she's living in with her parents to visit with Karl but the soldier finds her and accuses her of trying to steal food, however when she confesses the truth to the local priest the priest accuses her of attempting to elope with Karl and she is shamed by the community and they question Karl on the matter, of which he is totally oblivious to the situation and makes Bonnie's situation worse as she is now seen as a "lustful harlot".
Eventually one morning Karl asks Bonnie why she seems so sad and she confesses what's been happening to which Karl fails to console her but he does go to the priest to explain that the two would run around at night in the woods and look for things and he takes the priest to Vox's house where he lives to show him all the things he and Bonnie had found and offers him a rifle to help clear the misunderstanding.
The priest declines his offer at first but after seeing the bitter soldier stumbling drunk through the street questions the nature of the soldiers intentions. Three nights later he takes Karl's offer and on the next Sunday tries to clear the issue with the community however the soldier calls the priest a coward, liar, and "alien lover" driving a wedge in the community between those who support the priest and his claims of a misunderstanding and the soldier's claims of the priest harboring sympathies to Karl and "those warlike humans" at large.
Bonnie and Karl go out into the forest once more to look for scrap and find a mostly intact 5 ton hauler with a working engine but no wheels or bed. On the way back to town they come across a meeting of the soldier and his supporters in the woods discussing how to turn the community on Karl and Luke. Karl begins to record him with his phone as they discuss how to kill him, he is tempted to shoot him then and there with his rifle but Bonnie being there keeps him from doing so as he believes "It ain't right to kill in the presence of women".
Gradually the wedge between the Priest's following and the Soldier's following becomes something more than just a hushed matter once the harvest rolls around and Karl tried to teach a few of the local boys how to carve wood and one of the soldier's supporters claims that he's indoctrinating the kids. However the soldier in a drunken stupor tries to get first the bar owner's wife and secondly Bonnie to sleep with him claiming that he'd never taken it straight before. He's a bit forceful with Bonnie, pinning her down and trying to strip her before he's pulled off her by the night watchman and Karl who locks the soldier in the jail. When the night watchman claims that the soldier tried to rape Bonnie the community calls for his head and he loses most of his following, some of the priest's supports claim that the soldier had brought nothing but trouble and in the first week accused a girl of being a thief.
He is tried and found guilty and hangs just as harvest ends.
Throughout the ordeal Bonnie and Karl grow extremely close with Bonnie rarely leaving her home with Karl who is always armed due to being a country boy and former soldier, Vox starts calling Karl "Sonny" rather than Karl or Human as the two have a bit of father-son dynamic with Vox trying to get Karl to be more bun-esc while Karl is in his element and is kind of oblivious to Vox's subtler implications but he slowly begins to blend in both thanks to living with Vox and just adopting some of the bun habits as best a human can.
On the day of the soldiers hanging Bonnie has a breakdown over the night he tried to assault her and Karl consoles her in the woods, this time successfully calming her down, Bonnie tries to say something to Karl but he doesn't understand and Bonnie kisses him something Karl welcomes with open arms and a playful tongue.
