Backstory: With Vocaloids. Music-making AI, and AR technology continuing to grow in popularity the small-but-capable Kanade Corporation - located in Kamui Star - had set out to become the next big name in both. After a few years of R&D and struggling with dead-ends and technological limitations, an epiphany that on examination would be considered far too good to be true came over the research team and a working prototype of both the hardware and software was finalized. For its debut performance, the design team created the virtual idol character Koaku Mao, playing off the eerily magical quality of the impressive technology as a thematic point, and creating her as a cutesy, mischievous demon girl that would be 'summoned' by the power of a hardlight holograph projector.

This would turn out to be truer than they all expected.

As it would turn out, the company was under the influence of a powerful Demon sealed deep within Naraku, working on a way to get out. Unable to do this on its own, it instead turned to guiding the employees towards summoning it, and it used their project as the medium. However, while the beginnings of this efforts would prove successful, it ultimately would be thwarted by a group of magic-wielders who had tracked down the anomalous equipment. They were unable to completely stop the summoning itself, and instead made an attempt to pre-empt it by loading Mao's data into the summoning ritual first, this proved to succeed in stopping the Demon's summoning, but it resulted in the strange side-effect of bringing Mao to life. By the time she had truly come to, however, the employees of Kanade Corp, the Demon, and the mages that were responsible for her 'birth' had disappeared.

For the longest time after that, Mao had spent most of her time on the net, establishing a large fanbase for herself as a net idol like Melody, who she became very closely acquainted with. But as the days went by and her treks through the web had found her in more magical avenues, she found herself becoming more curious of her own existence, and more lonely. She has since set out looking for the people responsible for her birth, enlisting the help of the Platinum Heart along the way. She would later move in with her and is known for helping to organize and perform for the Ace Detective's infamous parties. Currently she has followed in Melody's footsteps and is performing a world tour for charity.
