Mellow - Magic

Magic

In the world of Mellow, magic works differently than expected. It has two important components that must work together. One is familiar: Mana. Predictably, Mana is the essence of your soul. It's what makes you real and alive. Extended periods without Mana lead to a profound sleep, at which point it's very difficult to wake up.

The second component is feeling. Without emotions, Mana remains stagnant inside us, unable to take shape or form. Someone who does not feel cannot cast magic.

However, emotions can be extreme, and this leads to two things: Mana is altered radically, causing major changes to our magic. The changes can never be known for sure, since each person is different and reacts differently to certain emotions. When one feels particularly extreme emotions, they also lose control of their magic and when they can and can't use it. There's a less obvious danger to this - depleting one's Mana reserves entirely can sometimes lead to permanent damage.

Wrath - Intensifies magic
Happiness - Causes sporadic bursts
Sadness - Area of Effect

Additionally, magic cannot be learnt. It can only be unlocked through a particularly impactful event or series of events in one's life.
