  5. Reggie’s Dilemma
  6. In this case, Reggie, as shown in “He hadn’t started the paper. In fact he had only read about 25 pages out of the 300 he needed to read before beginning the paper.” (On Course, Inc., n.d, p. 1), “[…] he had missed class discussions because of games.” (On Course, Inc., n.d, p.1), treats his courseworks in a negligent manner. Having a poor self-motivation, he thinks he is incapable of doing his assignments alone. Because of that, he asks help for Academic Supporting Counselor, Sally, and, as seen in “The first thing Reggie did was call SALLY [...] to see if he could work with a tutor on his paper.” (On Course, Inc., n.d, p.1), tries to find a tutor to partially throw the weight on his/her shoulders. Without success, later, as displayed in “Finally, he found an essay on the Internet and used it to write his paper.” (On Course, Inc., n.d, p.1), Reggie decides to plagiarize someone else’s essay he found on the internet.
  7. Plagiarism is the act of plagiarizing, that means “: to commit literary theft : present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.” (Merriam-Webster, 2018, def. 2), and UoPeople Code of Conduct and Integrity are extremely against it.
  8. UoPeople General Code of Conduct states the following, “All members of the University community are expected to engage in socially responsible behavior.” (UoPeople, 2017, p. 134), demonstrating the importance of social responsibility, that is “an ethical framework and suggests that an entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large.” (Wikipedia, 2018, para. 1), within an educational environment. Reggie’s attitude was clearly against it, since he plagiarized someone else’s work, showing his carelessly behavior towards academic health.
  9. Further, UoPeople Code of Academic Integrity states that, “However, students must submit their own individual work at all times [...]” (UoPeople, 2017, p. 134), “All student work and scholarship must be free of fraud and deception including: • Plagiarism [...]” (UoPeople, 2017, p. 135), showing plagiarism won’t be tolerated under any circumstances.
  10. In order to not incur in the same mistake Reggie did, I will properly cite or quote text fragments using APA system of in-text citations and references. Also, it is important to always certify myself what is the source of the content I’m reading. I made the decision to act this way because I don’t like the idea of stealing someone else’s hard work. More, I think that originality is what makes a work unique.
