  1. Name: Urik Ironfist
  2. Race: Mountain Dwarf
  3. Age: 312 years old
  4. Class: Paladin
  5. Backstory:
  6. In a tavern, in one of the kingdom of the Dwarves, two friends, both of the same Dwarven race and clan, the Ungart, are joyfully celebrating another good day of work. Chugging ale with the gallon, merrily singing and laughing, the two miners talked about the spoils found that will further the kingdom. But all of a sudden, one of them stops in his tracks, it was Thoradin, the older miner between the two. What once was an expression of celebration, turned to a sorrowful look. Thoradin’s features, sunken and wrinkled, were further more pronounced because of that. His long hair and long, white beard were caked in grime from the mine.
  7. “Thorn, what do ya think of what happened to ol’ Urik?”
  8. Thorn, a younger dwarf, one that was nicknamed “short beard”, a nickname that wasn’t one bit original, since it was a common one for a lot of young’uns, glanced at the old Thoradin questioningly.
  9. “Who?”
  10. “The Ironfist one, which one would ya think I’d be talkin’ ‘bout at this time?” Thoradin shaked his fist impatiently.
  11. “Ah, you mean that tragedy… Grim times these are.”
  12. A human might have seen a contemplating adult individual on the young dwarf’s face, but any dwarf knew that the young’un was a mere 40 years old, yet to reach Dwarven maturity, his looks and speech were that of a sage. His short, brown beard had a small log lodged in, it was his way to lengthen his facial hair, but again, dwarves saw right through it, to his dismay.
  13. “Aye, indeed, what do ya think really happened with that oathbreaker?”
  14. To be an oathbreaker in the Dwarven society was a grave sin, worthy of a grudge, Thoradin couldn’t call Urik anything else, after all, Urik indeed broke one of the most important of the Dwarven laws. He had to be judged before being called an “oathbreaker”, of course, but instead of taking part in the Dwarven Court after breaking the law, he ran.
  15. “He was an oathbreaker wasn’t he? Of course, he was guilty of all of it, no innocent dwarf would run like that!”
  16. In a loud and rash voice, he almost took the attention of the rest of the tavern. Luckily, everyone was too busy being merry to associate the talk to the grave tragedy.
  17. “I knew that oathbreaker ya small beard! He loved his family to bit-… Nay, I’m sorry, that was thoughtless of me, wasn’t it?”
  18. “…” Thorn was confused about the old dwarf’s sudden change in attitude.
  19. “Is just that… He was a good laddie. A great example of a dwarf even. Respectful of the law, always eager to help, stern, strong yet with a big golden heart. The way things ended, to me it’s all odd.”
  20. With a frown, he exhaled all the air in his lungs, the smell of alcohol was thick.
  21. “You’re thinking too much about him, he was your friend, but there was nothing else that could have happened. He did it, he was the only one there.”
  22. “Aye, aye… He was the only one there, but the details, young’un. I couldn’t believe it at first so I investigated a bit myself.”
  23. Thorn betrayed amazement.
  24. “You investigated it?” his tone was clearly unbelieving.
  25. “Aye, the oddest part was the weapon.”
  26. “What about it?”
  27. “There was no weapon.”
  28. “That’s impossible! Cutting three people, even if two were children, into small bits and pieces, how could that...”
  29. “Quiet, ya dingus!” Thoradin tapped the smaller dwarf’s mouth. Some dwarves in the tavern gave them a few looks but no one said anything, they celebrated merrily in their own world again without a worry.
  30. “Aye aye, that’s right. He was all a bloody mess, bawling his eyes out near the corpses, yet there were no weapons, and no blood outside the house. How can he get rid of the weapon that way and then give himself away? I say, if it was all a hoax to get himself out of the situation, why in the bloody hell did he ran away then? Even when he ran away laddie, he didn’t try to hurt anyone, he even took an axe before breaking through the guards.”
  31. “Y-you’re right, that is odd…”
  32. Thorn now started to look ashamed, not only because of his outbursts, but he was also thinking that his rash accusations of “oathbreaking”, even if supported by the kingdom, might have been ignorant. Thoradin did a good job in using the oddest of details to persuade Thorn, for Thorn immediately grasped the problem. He would have been more ashamed of himself because he wasn’t diligent enough to understand the situation, but it was the Dwarven kingdom and forces of order that didn’t do their jobs. The shame appeared anyway, his compatriots could have done better. With Thoradin’s next words, he also started to remember a weird detail about the murder case.
  33. “And then, the people that saw him there, running and crying, they said he screamed…”
  34. “”I will avenge them! They will be avenged!”, right?” At least that was one of the details Thorn heard.
  35. “Aye, so ya heard then? It’s all so odd still.”
  36. “If someone else did it, why was there no blood outside the house? If he did it, where was the weapon? If he wanted to use all this odd situation to get himself out of his crime, why did he run away?”
  37. “Hahaha, I knew ya were a sharp laddie!” Thoradin smacked the young’uns back, the air in his lungs was forcefully pushed out and he started coughing.
  38. “Ah, sorry laddie.”
  39. “…”
  40. “…”
  41. A moment of silence took both the dwarves.
  42. “There’s… Nothing we can do anyway… There’s no other way to explain this murder…”
  43. “Aye… Maybe magic! But I have no knowledge of magic or the occult. The kingdom did look into that but they found nothin’. I never really got specific details, I wouldave been too nosy if I pushed it.”
  44. “And he also ran away. It’s been so long… There’s nothing we can do.” Thorn looked sorrowful.
  45. “Laddie…”
  46. “…”
  47. “Ya know what; I’m sorry for ruining the moment, let’s get back to drinkin’! Miners like us shouldn’t bother with these hard subjects!” The old dwarf tried to seem merry again, but indeed, the moment was already ruined. The sorrow of losing a friend, still painted the old dwarf’s face. The younger one couldn’t refuse his elder either.
  48. “Yeah, let’s get back to our ale…”
  49. While the two dwarves, in their cozy inn were drinking away trying to dispel the heavy mood, Urik Ironfist was out there. Yes, he was still out there, still looking, still in his craze, trying to find the killer of his family. The black, unholy figure that took them away, that broke his honor. The one that made him break his oath. The sinful one that he will purge in the name of his loved ones, his clan and his god. Vengeance shall fall upon the wicked, with the broken pieces of his oath, he forged a new one, and with his new holy book in hand and the voice of his god whispering in his head, his quest starts.
  50. Description:
  51. Urik Ironfist is a 4 feet 2, 220lb Mountain Dwarf Paladin, with long scruffy and unkempt black hair. Since his family’s tragedy, he forgoes even the hygiene of his beard, something dwarves would never do. He has a big lengthy scar on his chest from when he escaped the Dwarf hold (which came from an axe). His round eyes are always open and unblinking, a mad glint residing inside them. His nose is big and looks as if it was crushed beforehand.
  52. Extra to the character:
  53. If there was a time where this old dwarf would have showed his joyous side, at least when drinking, now, the only reason he drinks is to keep his sorrow in check so it does not overtake his anger. What he does with his anger is to unleash it on his enemies, with bellows and roars of pure, unfiltered rage, frothing and shaking like a madman while bringing down the hammer of both justice and vengeance. With a stern, unmoving gaze, he will do, in the limits of his beliefs as a man of god, everything in his power to hunt every demon and unholy being. He’s a dwarf of little words and will keep to himself, trying to not get into fights with anything but the wicked or at least, not with anyone that isn’t trying to kill him.
  54. His demeanor is a malicious sarcastic, but he cares about his friends and his only bond, despite being unable to ever return to his Dwarven hold, are his friends and his dead family. Under his rough, stern and unkempt exterior, he is a dwarf with a heart of gold trying to find a reason to live again after his traumatic loss. One of the things that will ease but could also break his heart even more are new friends and companions he can trust and protect. Revenge is a necessity, to protect the honor of the Ironfist even if his personal honor is irredeemable, to protect his family’s and to reach his god’s will of purging all demonic foes.
  55. Women and children in peril will always be a soft spot for Urik Ironfist, that is something he can’t ignore no matter what.
  56. While he seems in control of his emotions, unlike a sociopath, his feelings are not impaired, he just won’t show them and he will try to never show weakness in front of his party, supporting the dwarf in moments of hardships is a good thing and something that will keep him from going astray. Romantic relationships do not interest Urik in any way and will answer aggressively to anyone that tries such behavior, especially if they know his history.
  57. He will tell his history to the party since he does not wish to lie and while he believes he did wrong, he also believes he couldn’t have done otherwise, the wicked need to be struck. What is most important is to redeem his clan, his family and to appease his god and his vengeance, his honor is irredeemable though.
  58. Extra additions:
  59. His Holy Book will tell Urik if there are any demons nearby, he will always give attention to the book even if in the middle of other quests, this does not make him blind to the situation of his party (as in, he won’t start running like a madman towards the demon while his party is being torn to shreds by a dragon, he’ll take care of the dragon and then run to the demon). The Holy Book will not pick up on beings that are lesser or just not full demons (I’m trying to not get Tieflings killed all the time, depends on the game though, DM you tell me). Despite that, Urik will hunt these beings down if they’re deemed to be wicked by his judgment. His powers as a paladin come from the holy book and the god that whispers in his mind.
  60.
  61. Personality traits:
  62. Urik has a big heart, even if the exterior looks rough and unapproachable.
  63. Urik feels no fear in combat.
  64. He will protect women and children.
  65. He is taciturn and will avoid others.
  66. His bonds are very important. Friends, allies, etc will soothe him and push him to betterment.
  67. Bond:
  68. Family, friends, vengeance and honor.
  69. Flaws:
  70. When in combat, Urik has the tendency to look, sound and act as if completely insane. Shivering, mouth frothing, with bellows of pure rage. This can scare allies and enemies alike.
  71. When not taciturn, he tends to be maliciously sarcastic. That can be very irritating to others.
  72. His quest to kill demons will move him more than anything else, that means he can become irrational in his hunt. It’s a bigger issue when his god and his holy book are goading him on.
  73. His lack of fear in combat is a fatalistic lack of will to live.
  74. It is hard for him to bond with others, because of the nature of his quest and because of past experiences. If bonds are broken, especially through forced means, it can further push him to the edge.
  75. Taciturn and emotionless as he seems outside of combat (unless you watch carefully and see his unblinking, mad gaze), it’s those moments when he’s the most conflicted and emotionally vulnerable.
  76. A heavy drinker even for a dwarf. He drinks to keep his sorrow from overcoming his anger, and unleashes his extreme anger in battle.
