- Wandering the desert looking to quench my thirst,
- But there’s something I see that I think of first.
- Who is that gem that I spot out there far away?
- It’s in some town called Our Town. For a night I might stay.
- For the sun sinks low, and the moon starts to peak,
- I’m just lucky I’ve found this place to sleep.
- As I walk down the streets, I see ponies with grins wide as the sky.
- ’This is abnormal,’ I think, then ponder why.
- Then I catch a glimpse of that gem from before.
- Closer, this time, but I want to see more.
- That hair, that face, those glimmering eyes,
- ’What a beauty,’ I think, ’why, she’s quite the prize!’
- But I am interrupted by one who’s noticed my gazing,
- One white-colored stallion, not quite as amazing.
- "Welcome to Our town!" the stallion shouts,
- "I’m Double Diamond. With new friends, we can’t do without.
- So introduce yourself, new friend! I must know your name!"
- But I have trouble remembering. I have only myself to blame.
- "Don’t worry," assures Diamond, smile unyielding as ever,
- "Our leader will name you. She is quite clever."
- "Who is your leader?" I question.
- "Starlight Glimmer, for all thoughts and intention."
- "Is that the goddess that has locked in my sight?"
- Diamond’s expression changes quickly to fright.
- "Such words are wrong! Bad! Forbidden! Abhorred!
- They imply inequality! That is deserving of scorn!"
- I take glances around, and then it strikes me,
- These smiling ponies all bear a symbol of equality!
- "For what purpose?" my confusion I express,
- "Our world view, of course! In it, our faith is intense.
- And we extend our hooves to you, our newest acquaintance!"
- "I’ll be the judge of that," says a new voice in a heavenly cadence.
- Then I look in the direction of this third voice.
- It is Starlight! My heart skips a beat — it has no choice!
- "Tell me, Diamond, who is our new friend? What is his name?"
- "He couldn’t tell me," says Diamond, "there is no name that he claims."
- "Looking at him, I’m not too surprised,"
- ’Perhaps I’ve wandered too long,’ I surmised.
- "My anonymous friend," says Starlight, "I am deeply concerned.
- You are dirty, and lean. How long in the desert sun were you burned?"
- "As long as I remember," I tell her, "I’ve wandered the wastes."
- "Diamond!" demands Starlight, "Get food and water! Make haste!"
- "Why treat me with such kindness?" I ask the good mare,
- "Because you’ve been unfortunate ’till now. For that, I deeply care."
- "Starlight Glimmer, I thought it too good to be true,
- that you’d be a beauty not just outside, but inside, too."
- "You flatter me," says Starlight, with a heartwarming smile.
- Our Town has more hospitality than I’ve seen in a while!
- But as the sunset’s orange turns to the night’s black,
- My mind, despite Starlight’s presence, goes back on its track.
- "There is one favor I must ask of you," I say.
- "Anything," she replies, "say it! Do not delay!"
- "I’ve walked for two days. I have not rested or eaten.
- I must sleep tonight, or by exhaustion, I’ll be beaten."
- "You may sleep in my house," Starlight announces,
- "That’s where all new members sleep until they have their own houses.
- But before that, you must wash your coat,
- The dirt you’ve collected could fill a small moat!"
- And so, in Starlight’s house, I’ve eaten and had drink,
- And I’m now in the shower, so I no longer stink.
- With the last specks of dirt now washed off my back,
- I reach for the towel, but it’s not on the rack!
- And so, soaking wet, I go see my host,
- And her reaction is not what I’d expect from most.
- She cringes at the sight of each drop,
- And when I reflexively shake my head, she hops.
- But it’s then that I’ve noticed something queer.
- Her equal symbol is just a veneer.
- With the water, her true mark is revealed.
- To this, I tilt my head and ask, "Why? What’s the deal?"
- Her once pleasant face curls up in ugly indignation,
- "I had to, okay!?" she screams, "It is required for my station!
- You see all those happy ponies out there?
- Without my special magic, they’d all live in despair!
- It is important that I’m able to remove ponies’ marks,
- So for all our sakes, don’t be a narc!"
- I stare intently into the angry mare’s eyes,
- And behind all that anger, I see great fright.
- I walk to her slowly, as to not make her alarmed,
- Then I give her a hug in an attempt to disarm.
- "Starlight," I tell her, "I understand.
- We all must make sacrifices for our plans.
- If hiding your mark is what must be done,
- Then any qualms with it, I have none."
- Starlight’s face turns from anger to relief,
- and I see a single tear roll down her cheek.
- "I’m glad you understand," she says, returning my embrace,
- Then, without warning, she plants a kiss on my face.
- "I need sleep," I yawn, as I release the poor soul,
- "Please don’t find this too forward," she replies, "but I need someone to hold."
- I chuckle. "We’ve known each other less than a day."
- "Perhaps so," she replies, "but you know me more than those here who’ve had the longest stays.
- You’ve discovered my secret, and for my transgression,
- You’ve forgiven me, and shown me compassion."
- And so we turn off the lights, and we huddle in her bed.
- It’s a divine experience, otherwise couldn’t be said.
- The rhythm of her heartbeat and the warmth of her body,
- Both fill me with immeasurable glee.
- I’d never imagined this, because when wandering the wastes, it always seems,
- That you can’t have a nightmare if you never dream.
