Theoretical grounds for application of two of the techniques in operations research discipline are developed. This involves optimizing the operation of weed-control machinery existing in the agricultural infrastructure of irrigation districts. One of the techniques is network theory where PRIM algorithm is used to find minimum expansion tree of canals and sewers network. The second technique is linear programming which is used to find the optimal machine number and type for the infrastructure maintenance under constraints. Applications are illustrated with the information from an irrigation district in Mexico where it was shown how operations research is not only a valuable support for decision makers in charge of conservation of irrigation districts but it also included resource savings. Keywords: weed control, irrigation district, operations research.
