K has been labeled retarded by the locals after he was found collapsed nearby.  He doesn't remember much, but he's at least certain of his name, and he has two things that are special to him: a scrapbook and a cardigan.  He doesn't remember where he got the cardigan, but it's teal (lmao, hi Wynn), and he bought himself the scrapbookso he could fill it just in case he forgot again.

Anyway, he was adopted by Chibi, and he bonded strongly with her dad, who helped him get a job at a construction company he worked for.

K didn't like it, but he did like that they were working on a job in an interesting place, so that during his breaks he could explore.  On one side of the road was the house of some nice people, friends of Chibi's dad.  On the other side was a swamp with a few houses inside of it.

And then at night after work, K would curl up next to Chibipapa's chair and doze, listening in on everything around them until it was time for bed, and he went to his bunk at the construction camp.

Once when he was exploring the swamp, he made friends with the boy who lived in the house there, and they went out to watch toads emerge from the mud together.  Another time, he accidentally dropped in on a party and ran away.

One day, they just switched from working one part of the job to the next, a few meters down the road.  K took the time during the switch, because he couldn't operate the machinery, to wander a little, and found the construction camp was only one section away.  He went back and counted, and then darted to the camp to double check with the overseer that he had his numbers right.

He was scolded, and tried to explain that he just wanted to make sure, but the overseer called him 'more retarded than the rest of these retards!' and K felt something inside of him snap.

He calmly tapped the shoulder of the biggest 'retard' there and told him that the boss wanted thrown into the deepest part of the swamp.  The boss started screeching and yelling annoyingly the closer they got, so K told the big guy not to.  The boss swore he'd destroy K, and everything he cared about.

K realized his mistake and stood there a few moments to process.  There was a meeting for the boss not long after, and K jumped into action, rapidly packing.  Other workers tried to steal from him in the process, but he remained stubborn, and since half of the other workers were in a meeting, K didn't have anyone to ask if some things were his or theirs, so if they were on his bunk, they went into his bag, including some jewelry.

He was thinking that if he wasn't gone, Chibipapa would be fired or worse.

So, he ran off without a word, just as the meeting was ending, and as he ran into people arriving from the meeting, they warned him that he was in BIG shit.

Very stressed, he agreed and said he was going to leave so he didn't cause more trouble.  They were indifferent.

He spent his whole trip trying not to cry as he started walking, and didn't stop until he heard Chibipapa's voice echoing from the distance that he was a little shit, and needed to go left two 'agates.'

K stopped dead in his tracks from confusion and started asking around, but everyone else was confused by the context, too.  They said agates were stones, until someone introduced him to a cat named Agate.

And then I woke up on my own. o.o
