- These are my notes for a Temenos solo speedrun in Octopath Traveler II.
- Sample vid (no-mic): https://youtu.be/yjf2B4-jc5c
- Sample vid (commentated version): https://youtu.be/v0k-RQj5Q6E
- This route saves time by skipping several towns (Tropu/Merry Hills/Montwise/Timber) and using cheaper armor to get by. It also saves money by using Catapult along with Victory Ring and Lost Tribe Axe, replacing several Hired Help usages. In exchange, there's some slower item pickups in the early game, and exploration is a bit riskier as Temenos is less bulky. The Cubaryi fight also has more variations with a bit more risk, though it still has a high win rate. (Kaldena is actually easier, albeit longer.)
- EXP/JP/Money-wise, the route is mostly comfy, with a spare 15k Beastlings for the final dungeon too. The only minor issue with JP is that Hale and Hearty may need to be delayed, depending on encounters. It is guaranteed before Stormhail though, which is the section where it actually matters most for.
- Castti rules from speedrun leaderboards:
- - is only to be used for soothing the Montwise mountain guard
- - cannot gain exp/jp in battle
- - cannot use skills
- - must flee or defend in turns
- - if KOed, Temenos is allowed to fight and win
- Also, thanks to:
- - Xazu and Doid for answering my questions
- - Dalia and Z3R01337 for their notes, which I used for parts of early game
- - Sneaky314k and YTreds for their work on previous solos of this
- Tips:
- - Latent Fireball does 1 shield chip to everything. Latent can be freely used anywhere. There's only one coerce in Delsta later that slows down without it, but we're extremely likely to build it by then and have an alternative with magic.
- - Elem Barrage x2 always hits at least 4 and up to 6, so it has reasonable odds to defeat a Cait/Puff (5 HP) if you want to conserve stones. Latent barrage guarantees the win because it always breaks the Cait/Puff.
- - If you get Chubby/King Puff/Queen Puff, you can usually afford Evil Ward if you want, just watch cursor for Mystic Staff versus Cubaryi. And skip money based on Cait/Puffs to save time, etc or use more HHGs in place of catapult, etc.

- ====================
- Cubaryi (53,500 HP) (5 shields) (weak to Spear Axe Staff)
- This fight has a lot of edge cases due to summon/turn order RNG, but the basic concept is to break her, do 40k worth of damage via Vets/Beastlings (with max boost of cap 9,999 damage), and then usually extra vets/beasts before or after the break for the other 13.5k damage. Below, I list the most common winning combinations, then specifics for how to play starting from T2.
- Cubaryi's first action is always a null shield that cancels the night debuff. Sometimes, you can break before she casts the shield, in which case HH Beastlings hit cap, but if she cancels the night debuff, HH Vets are needed to do cap 9999s on her.
- Summon on turn 1 always. The NPC will always break either 1 or 2 shields each turn and if he doesn't block any attacks, he will always stay for 6 or 7 shield breaks total, usually across three or four turns. He also heavily favors the 2 shield attack.
- Adapt based on your summon's actions and the turn order and always try to pivot to one of the first three winning combinations below.
- This route assumes you use 60k on this battle, but you can often get a Collect or lucky turn order to save money. (The 16k collect money is not mandatory but makes chapter 4 encounters safer or can speed up the shopping menu.)
- Winning combinations with 5 BP are below:
- 1) Cubaryi is at 1 shield and you do HHB x3, HHV x4 (guaranteed win, 45k)
- 2) Cubaryi is at 2 shields and you do HHV x4, HHV x3 (80% win rate, needs first set to break 2 shields, 60k)
- 3) You have 1 Sidestep OR Max HP and NPC breaks for you. You do HHV x4, Defend, HHV x4 (guaranteed win, 60k, most common).
- (note: if night debuff is up, HHV x4 can be swapped for HHB x4 to save money)
- Winning combinations with 4 BP if desperate:
- 4-6) NPC breaks while you have 1 Sidestep OR Max HP:
- - 4) HHV x4, and she has DEFENSE BUFF: HHG x1, HHV x3 (unfavored range, 67k)
- - 5) HHV x4, and she has DEFENSE BUFF but you can SAFELY POM UP: Pom S, HHV x4 (guaranteed win, 60k)
- ["safely pom up" usually means you go first on last turn or have Sidestep still]
- - 6) if she has NO BUFF: HHV x4, Defend, HHV x3 (guaranteed win, very rare case, 60k)
- Example Script 1:
- T1: Summon
- T2: Defend / Sidestep / Mystic Staff / Pom S
- [adapt from here; we'll assume worst case, going later in turn order on T2+T3, which is T2 Defend]
- T3: Sidestep (assumes NPC breaks)
- T4: HHV x4
- T5: Defend / Collect
- T6: HHV x4
- Example Script 2:
- T1: Summon
- T2: Defend / Sidestep / Mystic Staff / Pom S
- [adapt from here; we'll assume best turn order, going first T2, which is T2 Mystic Staff and NPC breaks]
- T3: HHB x4
- T4: Defend
- T5: HHV x3
- Example Script 3:
- T1: Summon
- T2: Defend / Sidestep / Mystic Staff / Pom S
- [adapt from here; we'll assume decent turn order, going later T2 but first T3, so do T2 Pom S]
- T3: HHB x3 (if 1 shield left)
- T4: HHV x4
- or
- T3: HHV x4 (if 2 or 3 shields left)
- T4: HHV x3
- Specific turn-by-turn guide:
- Turn 1 is always a summon. For turn 2, based on turn order and your NPC's actions:
- - if you go FIRST ON T2, ALWAYS DO T2 MYSTIC STAFF. If NPC breaks after that, do T3 HHB x4, T4 Defend, T5 HHV x3 for the win. If NPC did not break, try to pivot to one of the other winning combinations above.
- - if you go second on T2 but first on T3, do T2 Pom S. On T3, if she is at 1 or 2 shields, do winning combination 1) or 2) above. So HHB x3 HHV x4 if 1 shield or HHV x4 HHV x3 if 2 shields. If she's at 3 shields, try HHV x4 x3 anyway but it's probably a loss. Need high crits and lucky vets weapon types if you are that unlucky.
- - if you go third on T2 but first on T3, do T2 Sidestep, then T3 Mystic Staff to go into combination 3)
- - if you go second/third on T2 AND second/third on T3, do T2 Defend. Do T3 Sidestep and hope the NPC breaks for you to go into combination 3). If the NPC does not break after T3, try to survive and still go into one of the first three winning combinations, optionally re-summoning to hope NPC blocks an attack.
- Optional tips for battle:
- - if NPC leaves, you often need to re-Summon. Even if she's at 1 shield, NPC breaking gives chances for them to block an attack for you. (A semi-common case is NPC leaving between T1 and T2, which often needs you to re-Summon on T2 and hope for good RNG.)
- - most scripts Defend after she un-breaks so that the final Vets get an extra BP. If you already go first next turn, you can Collect instead (usually ~76%-79% Collect for 16k, which is NOT mandatory but can speed up menus and gives extra money to toss around in last dungeon)
- - you sometimes have to assume the NPC will use his 2 shield attack to break for you, so fight assuming that will happen. Sometimes, if the situation is dire, you have to fight assuming the NPC will block an attack as well.
- - even if it doesn't work out, the resets and retries are fast, and the fight has a very high winrate if played correctly
- - Temenos at full HP can survive almost any of Cubaryi's attacks except for her special boost mode attack, when the energy is surging around her. Similarly, 1 Sidestep will survive any of her attacks.
- - lastly, there's opportunities for bonus damage, extra Sidesteps, extra collect chances, etc. If turn order and summon RNG is extremely lucky, you can even re-break and use Guards/L stone/etc to save money. (Ex, if NPC chips to 3 shields after un-break, you can HHB x3 -> L stone to win and save 15k.) It's too much detail to go over all edge cases in this guide, but I'd suggest practicing the fight's variations and seeing where you can shave an action, gain an extra Sidestep/Collect chance, chip extra shields, etc. It isn't mandatory to learn them though; I've covered the most common winning cases above.
- [if you both Collected and got early break for only HHB + HHV used, then you used 30k, not the routed 60k, so you can skip the 28k in the next chapter. Sell right when you get to the village and continue to the final dungeon immediately. Want 112k+ going into dungeon.]
- Finish chapter
- TP Nameless Village
- Start Temenos 4
- Guide Shirlutto
- Enter woods and Safety Save
- Go to night after saving
- Battle (2 Remnants):
- T1: HHM x3
- T2: Flee
- Go to day and walk to get 28k
- TP Nameless Village
- Equipment menu: (if you collected Cubaryi, can skip the armor removals and selling of them)
- - unequip all
- - equip Unerring Bracelet
- - equip Quartz Shield
- Sell at shop until 112k+ if possible:
- - Starsplitter
- - Firestarter
- - Lost Tribe Axe
- - Jade Staff
- - Horned Helm
- - Knight's Armor
- - 2 Empowering Ring
- - Victory Ring
- - Refreshing Jam
- - Pilgrim Rod, M or L stones, Lychees, Nuts, etc
- You want 112k+ to have a spare HH beastlings for the final dungeon.
- (104k+ suffices too, but it'll be a spare HHG guards instead. You can break and flee a lot of encounters to save money too.)
- Go back to dungeon and S+Q on left of Save Point
- Run until you approach 2 torches and steps going downward (just before the gray chest)
- Go to NIGHT to break and flee Remnants again
- Walk remainder of map (can run a tiny bit)
- Optionally talk to Shirlutto for healing food if you're out of restoratives
- In Rifted Rock, CHECK THAT IT IS DAY
- Walk all the way
- When you reach very top left of stairs, go to NIGHT
- Break/Flee/KO the encounter
- Encounters with night debuff depending on your money:
- - any Skeletons: HHM x2 to break, flee
- - any Revenant: HHB x3
- - Elementals: Defend -> HHG x4 (or HHB x3 if surprised)
- - Lord of the Flies: Defend -> HHG x4 (or HHB x3 if surprised)
- The 30% Revenants break to Mystic Staff/HHG/HHM. HHG x3 or x4 also clears any remnant with it and pushes the enemy turns back.
- Go to Day after battle and walk to get Void Amulet (when you go left, you'll see a wooden ladder going down)
- Item:
- - Void Amulet on (in case of dark elemental surprise attack; put in first slot, do NOT equip over Unerring)
- - Heal HP/SP
- Go to top left cutscene
- Learn skills menu:
- - learn 2 more Cleric skills
- - Inner Strength on (over Evasive Maneuvers)
- Heal HP/SP
- Save (should be Lv18+ with Quartz Shield + Void Amulet + Unerring Bracelet on at minimum)
- Go in DAY to boss
- WATCH MYSTIC STAFF CURSOR NOW
- Kaldena (100,000 HP) (8 shields) (weak to Spear Staff Ice Wind)
- This fight uses 98k, but there's a slightly safer 106k strat listed at the bottom if you have enough money from collecting Cubaryi or saved the beastlings in this dungeon, where you will usually have 1 more Sidestep or 1 more free turn or so.
- T1: HHG x1
- T2: Sidestep x4
- T3: Pom L
- T4: Sidestep x4
- T5: Summon
- T6: Sidestep x4
- From here on, adapt based on the summon, turn order, and shields left. The goal is to break Kaldena, deal Vets x4 for damage. Then chip her to 1 shield and set up HH Ruffians x4. Immediately after that, use Pom L or Reinforcing Jam for max BP and do HHB x3 and HHV x4. After she comes back from break, do Pom M or Pom L into HHB x4 for the win.
- While this is happening, maintain Sidesteps and try to be efficient with Pom usages. Ex:
- Pom L
- Sidestep x4
- Summon / Sidestep
- Sidestep x4
- is more efficient with BP since you fully use max boost on your Sidestep casts. Sometimes though, you'll want to do
- Pom L
- Sidestep x4
- Sidestep x3
- to quickly build a stack, especially if you're gonna commmit to the burst soon. You generally want 2+ Sidesteps up when you use HH Beastlings to go for the break. (Preferably more for safety though.)
- After the first Vets, when you're bring her to 1 shield, stop Summon-ing when she reaches 5 shields and use your own boosted Staff x4 or Mystic Staff, etc to bring her to 1 shield. Try to do this efficiently such as with
- Pom L
- Sidestep x4
- Mystic Staff
- Sidestep x4
- or
- Pom L
- Staff x4
- Sidestep x3
- or some other combination, etc. Mainly try to avoid x2 boosts as those are inefficient. If you have only 1 spare BP, you can possibly use Pom S or Sidestep or Summon, etc.
- After she is at 1 shield, you'll want to go for the burst, so do a combination like
- Pom L
- Sidestep x3
- HH Ruffians x4
- Pom L
- OR
- Pom L
- HH Ruffians x4
- Pom M
- to get 5 BP and defense stacks up. Then do
- HHB x3 (first one breaks)
- HHV x4
- After that, she will come back from break with 1 attack and 1 transformation. Use Pom M to get max BP for the HHB x4 to finish.
- Pom M
- HHB x4
- if you do not have the Pom M but have enough Sidesteps, you can do
- Pom S
- Sidestep / Defend
- HHB x4
- but this is riskier as turn order changes on the middle turn above if she goes after you.
- Notes:
- - extremely rarely, you may run low on SP and can plum or jerky to restore it, but try to avoid this and go for the burst if SP is low/out
- - if you want to stall things out as your NPC breaks, just keep using Sidestep x1 as your BP builds, then use either Sidestep x3 or Sidestep x4 if you're getting higher on BP
- - do not bring her to 45% or higher as that's when she transforms and switches shields and resets her shield count, so it's an instant loss
- - if there's a chance your NPC may break prematurely, make sure to have 3 BP to max boost if it's gonna be the first break
- - else, if the NPC breaks early for second break, don't do damage, sidestep more, re-Summon and chip down to 1 shield and stop summoning
- - the final T22+ Pom M can be swapped for a Pom S if you have enough Sidesteps to stall out to get max BP. This is in case you needed to use the Pom M earlier in the fight for BP efficiency
- - you can also opt to use Pom S sooner in fight as well if you want; just try to be efficient with your BP if so
- The fight isn't not a guaranteed win, but it should be a very high win rate if played properly. In the worst case, you can usually stall her out using unboosted Sidesteps and plums, until the NPC's actions get you into a favorable position.
- 106k alternative: Skip the first turn guards usage, do Sidestep x3 on T1, and use Pom L and treat it as T3 on from there. At the very final burst, swap the final HHB with HHV to remove the range. This is more efficient with BP and usually lets you get an extra Sidestep or so.
- Time is when the first frame of the FIN screen pops up for Temenos. GG.
