- Pokemon Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald
- Platform: GBA
- Released (d.m.y):
- 21.11.2002 (J) 16.09.2004 (E) (J)
- 19.03.2003 (NA) 30.04.2005 (E) (NA)
- 25.07.2003 (EU) 21.10.2005 (E) (EU)
- Based on: European versions [AGB-AXPP-EUR] (S) / [AGB-AXVP-EUR] (R) /
- [AGB-BPEP-EUR] (E)
- - I recommend playing the game with a GameCube using the Game Boy Player.
- This will allow you to play in a more comfortable position than with
- a DS Lite. Note, however, that the Game Boy Player is rather sensitive
- to dirt and corrosion, so it better be in good condition.
- Otherwise, it's worthless, as the games will either fail to boot up
- or crash soon after booting. GBC games are much more susceptible to
- this (mine can't run GBC games anymore, but GBA games thankfully still
- work so long as they're clean).
- You'd also pretty much have to get a Hori Game Boy Player controller
- and those aren't exactly cheap.
- - Synchronize does *not* affect the Nature of a wild monster in RS (or
- FRLG). It was added in Emerald.
- × E: You *cannot* use Synchronize to affect the Nature of any Legendary
- Pokemon.
- - If you want Legendaries from the GBA games with good stats, it's now
- easier to get them from HGSS instead, as you can use Synchronize there
- (but not on Runners).
- - 20 slots for items in your inventory (30 in E). The quantity limit for
- a single slot is 99. You can have the same item in more than one slot.
- × Berries go up to 999, but you won't be reaching figures like that
- without a functioning RTC.
- - Pick Up: Super Potion, Full Heal, Full Restore, Revive, Ultra Ball,
- Rare Candy, Nugget, Protein, PP Up, King's Rock
- - If you want to steal held items, you'll need to use either Covet
- (Linoone Lv35, Skitty Lv31) or Trick (Kadabra / Alakazam Lv43). You
- can easily get a Lv64 Kadabra from FRLG.
- - Prior to Generation 4, all moves of a certain type were either physical
- or special as seen below.
- Physical Special
- Normal Water
- Flying Grass
- Bug Psychic
- Fighting Electric
- Rock Fire
- Ground Ice
- Poison Dark
- Ghost Dragon
- Steel
- - The Hoenn Pokedex has 202 monsters (47 from Gen 1, 20 from Gen 2 and
- 135 new ones). You'll switch to the National Dex if / when you trade
- in a Pokemon from FRLG or post-game Emerald (even if it's pre-Nat).
- You can still view the Hoenn Pokedex afterwards. Trading post-Nat
- Pokemon within Ruby, Sapphire, or pre-Nat Emerald does not give you
- the NatDex.
- - Whenever you boot the game up, you will receive the following message:
- "The internal battery has run dry. The game can be played. However,
- clock-based events will no longer occur." As the battery lasts about 5
- years or so, at this point, no copy of the game will have a functioning
- RTC (unless the battery's been replaced). Thankfully, save data is no
- longer stored on SRAM, so, ultimately, this has very little impact on
- the game.
- × Some of the things you can't do without the RTC: grow berries, obtain
- berries from NPCs, obtain the Shell Bell (in a single playthrough),
- trigger Swarms, draw lottery.
- × If you replace the battery, you'll also have to start a new game to
- restore functionality to the RTC.
- - Evolving Feebas: Get one with a Modest, Mild, Rash, or Quiet Nature.
- Make PokeBlocks from any of the following berries at Lilycove: Wiki,
- Kelpsy, Hondew, Cornn, Pamtre. Pamtre is a rare Pick Up item in FRLG.
- It's the most effective one, but you really don't need it.
- × Hopefully you got enough of these berries before you lost the RTC.
- Otherwise, you'll either have to farm Pamtre Berries in FRLG or get
- Wiki Berries from Colosseum (from the berry NPC in Agate Village).
- - You can only give a maximum of 12 PokeBlocks to a specific Pokemon.
- - E: Pickup has been further nerfed from FRLG and now works almost
- exactly the same way as it does in Diamond & Pearl (a few different
- items). In other words, it's not going to help you much.
- - E: Upon beating the game, you'll unlock the National Dex, which opens
- up trading with FRLG, as well as trading of eggs. Of course, FRLG has its
- own requirements as well (ie. beat the game and clear the seven islands).

- Littleroot
- Initial: 3000p
- Item (nc): Potion
- - Set the clock on the wall in your room. With the battery dead, time
- won't move forward, so this is basically where you have to choose whether
- you'll have access to Shoal Cave in high tide or low tide. You can only
- catch Snorunt during low tide, so if that's a concern, set it to 6 AM/PM.
- If you want high tide, set it to 12.
- - You'll find one Potion stored on your PC.
- - Meet your rival, Brendan / May, next door.
- - Go choose your Lv5 starter at Route 101. (Treecko / Torchic / Mudkip)
- Save your game prior to that if you want to fu(k around with the stat roll
- (ie. nature and IVs).

- Special: Pokédex, Running Shoes
- - Check back with Birch at his lab.
- - Trading is now available.
- - Unlike in other installments, you won't be bumping into any of the
- Professor's aides who would then give you a magic item or treat for having
- a certain number of monsters in your log.
- Route 101
- - Grab 5 Zigzagoons for Pickup hoarding and HM use. They're a little
- hard to find in Emerald for some reason, but they're still there. Just
- don't level up too high, so you can't weaken anything properly. (at least
- not with your starter)
- × Super Potion, Full Heal, Full Restore, Revive, Ultra Ball, Rare Candy,
- Nugget, Protein, PP Up, King's Rock
- × Nuggets sell for 5000p. You probably won't have use for the Full
- Restores, so you can sell those, too (2500p). You won't need Protein
- eventually, either (4900p).
- × Cut, Rock Smash, (Surf) + Strength (post-evo)
- Route 102
- Item: Potion
- - Ralts [Slow]
- × Confusion, Psychic, Hypnosis, Dream Eater

- the eggs around with you. Hatch them by riding up and down the street
- in Rustboro.
- - Good xp here.
- - E: Roselia is nowhere to be found. You're better off leveling up on 110.
- Verdanturf
- Item (nc): TM45 (Attract)
- Shop: Nest Ball - 1000 p
- - Nest Balls work better than Ultra Balls on monsters below Lv20.
- - Winning in the contest mini-game doesn't give you anything that would

- Item: HP Up
- Item (h): Black Glasses

- Jagged Pass
- Item: Burn Heal
- Items (h): Full Heal, Great Ball
- - Best place to level up pre-Surf. You'll get 1k from 4 battles.
- You'll get a lot of SAT EP from the Numels, which, of course, won't
- help your physical attackers much, if at all. There's no easy way to
- gain Attack EP (except later in the game and only in Sapphire), but
- it's not that big a deal. Just give them as much Protein as you can.
- That's good enough.
- Route 112
- Item: Nugget
- Lavaridge

- your money before challenging him.
- - Slaking Lv28, Vigoroth Lv30, Slaking Lv31
- × Facade (20), Faint Attack (20), Yawn (10), Encore (5)
- × Facade (20), Faint Attack (20), Slash (20), Encore (5)
- × Facade (20), Faint Attack (20), Focus Punch (20), Slack Off (10)
- × He's got 2 Hyper Potions.
- × A brutally hard boss. I recommend at *least* Lv40. Don't forget
- about Pick Up hoarding when leveling up. Check them every 2 battles
- or so. (Doesn't do much in Emerald, but it's still something.)
- - E: Spinda Lv27, Vigoroth Lv27, Linoone Lv29, Slaking Lv31
- ---> Surf Clean-up
- - This is the point where you can finally start re-challenging the
- people listed under Trainer Eyes in your PokéNav. This happens when
- you enter an area that has any of the trainers. At least one is always
- affected (but usually just one). You need to take 255 steps before it
- happens again. This takes about 20 seconds with the Mach Bike. The
- "charge" will be used up even if you enter an area where all the trainers
- were already affected. Likewise, if some but not all trainers have been
- affected, the charge could easily be used without affecting any new
- trainers.
- × Their monsters will be stronger than the first time you fought them
- and become even stronger (and usually more numerous) after you fight
- them again. This happens three times before it caps.
- × If you need money, fight Lady Cindy and Rich Boy Winston (14 400p)
- Approach the route from Rustboro's side and use Teleport to get back
- after fighting them.
- × For xp, I would recommend Hiker Trent on Route 110 (4x RCK-GRD).
- × Don't forget to turn off switch prompt if you know you won't be
- switching.
- × When moving to an area in a way that involves a transition screen,
- a rematch is usually not triggered (and the charge isn't depleted,
- either). You'll just have to go back and forth until it triggers. In
- Emerald, rematching always behaves like this even when no transition
- screen is involved.
- - If you're aiming for really high levels for whatever reason, normal
- battles are preferable over Trainer Eyes, as it allows you to take
- advantage of Pick Up more. (Hiker Trent gives you 4k xp. At this point
- in the game, it takes 10 normal battles to get the same amount. Those
- 10 battles will take 4 minutes, whereas fighting Hiker Trent takes
- less than 2.)
- At the end of the game, normal battles are clearly a better source for
- Exp.
- - E: Trainer Eyes is replaced with the Match Call, but it's essentially
- the same thing.

- Items (nc): Cleanse Tag, Blue Orb / Red Orb / Magma Emblem (E)
- - The xp isn't bad. Also, if you're playing Sapphire and haven't maxed
- your EP yet, you can get Attack EP easily from Shuppets. It's more than
- likely too late, though.
- - To re-challenge Hex Maniac Valerie, you need to enter the specific
- floor she's on, which is the top floor, which means you really shouldn't
- bother. If you do it anyway, note that you may have to go up and down
- the stairs a few times before it works.
- - After witnessing the scene with the Orbs, head to Slateport to trigger
- another scene after which you can enter the hideout near Lilycove.
- - E: Nothing going on in Slateport (yet). Just get the emblem, then head

- TM04 (Calm Mind)
- Shop: Net Ball - 1000 p
- Boss(es): Liza & Tate (Mind Badge / #7), Maxie & Tabitha (E)
- - If you're getting the Regis, catch a Wailmer with the Super Rod.
- Get the first one that's Lv32 or above. That's good enough. You'll
- need to build it up to Lv40, so it evolves. Easily done by fighting
- Hiker Trent (except in E). Don't waste your time trying to find a
- higher level one. They're too rare.

- - Unlocking the Regis.
- - Okay, so, you'll need a Wailord and a Relicanth (as mentioned above
- somewhere) plus someone who knows Dig (just use the TM. You can buy
- them in Celadon). Find your way to the Dive spot on Route 134. Resurface
- right in front of the inscription to reach the place.
- - Once inside, use Dig in the middle of the inscription on the north wall.
- - In the next room, have Relicanth in the first slot in your party and
- Wailord in the last, then examine the Braille on the north wall. That
- should do it.
- - Stock up on Ultra Balls.
- Island Cave (Route 105)
- Boss: Regice Lv40
- - Examine the writing, then just wait. After standing still for a couple
- of minutes the path should open (no, you won't have to do it again if
- you leave).
- Desert Ruins (Route 111)
- Boss: Regirock Lv40
- - Examine the writing, move two tiles south and two east, then use Strength.
- Ancient Tomb (Route 120)
- Boss: Registeel Lv40
- - Use Fly in the middle of the room.
- Seafloor Cavern (Route 128)
- Item: TM26 (Earthquake)
- Boss: Maxie (R) / Archie (SE)
- - Mightyena Lv41, Crobat Lv41, Camerupt Lv43 / Sharpedo Lv43
- Cave of Origin (Sootopolis)
- Item: HM07 (Waterfall) (xE)
- Boss: Groudon Lv45 / Kyogre Lv45 (xE)
- - You can use Flash here, but it's not all that necessary.
- - Don't forget to drop off one of your monsters, so you can easily check
- the Legendary's Nature after catching it.
- - Groudon and Kyogre are easier to catch than the other Legendaries.
- - Ideal stats (neutral):
- × Kyogre: 158 HP, 108 Atk, 98 Def, 153 SAT, 144 SDF, 98 Spd
- × Groudon: 158 HP, 153 Atk, 144 Def, 108 SAT, 98 SDF, 98 Spd
- - E: Nothing really here. Just talk to Wallace and head out.
- Sky Pillar (E)
- - Once you find Rayquaza, the situation in Sootopolis will be resolved.
- - Rayquaza is now available for catching (RS players will have to beat
- the game first). Rayq's done some remodeling, though, so getting to the
- top will no longer be as simple as it was the first time.
- Sootopolis
- Item(s) (nc): HM07 (Waterfall) (E), TM03 (Water Pulse)
- Boss: Wallace / Juan (E) (Rain Badge / #8)
- - Luvdisc Lv40, Sealeo Lv40, Milotic Lv43, Whiscash Lv42, Seaking Lv42
- - E: Luvdisc Lv41, Crawdaunt Lv43, Sealeo Lv43, Kingdra Lv46, Whiscash Lv41
- Route 110
- Items: Glitter Mail, Tropic Mail
- Items (nc): TM12 (Taunt), Magnet, PP Max
- Route 119
- Item(s): Nugget (E), Rare Candy
- - You'll need the Acro Bike again.
- Route 114
- Item: Rare Candy
- Meteor Falls
- Items: TM23 (Iron Tail), PP Up, TM02 (Dragon Claw)
- Theft: Dragon Fang (Dragon Tamer Nicolas - Shelgon Lv49)
- - Good xp, but the location is a little too remote.
- - If you want to make it easier to re-fight Nicolas, don't fight the
- Veteran couple.
- Victory Road
- Items: Max Elixir, PP Up, Full Restore, TM29 (Psychic), Full Heal
- Items (h): Ultra Ball, Max Repel, Elixir
- Boss: Wally
- - Flash recommended.
- - This is a good place to level up only if you can kill the enemies
- with a single hit (Hariyamas have Whirlwind and Lairons and Loudreds
- have Roar), but if you can do that, your levels are already high enough
- to finish the game, so...
- - If you still want to level up for whatever reason, do it on B1F. It's
- dark and cramped, but it's much better than 1F where you can encounter
- 4 unevolved forms (B1F only has one and it's uncommon). Go in from the
- north side (after reaching the League). The enemy types are: FGT, STL-RCK,
- PSN-FLY, FGT-PSY. You'll get about 1k per battle.
- - Altaria Lv44, Delcatty Lv43, Gardevoir Lv45, Magneton Lv41, Roselia Lv44
- Ever Grande / Pokémon League
- Bosses: Sidney, Phoebe, Glacia, Drake, Steven / Wallace (E)

- Whiscash Lv56, Gyarados Lv56
- Littleroot
- Item (nc): SS Ticket
- - Not much to do in the post-game in RS. There are two Legendaries you
- can now get: either Latias (Sapphire) or Latios (Ruby) and Rayquaza.
- - The Latis are Lv40 runners, ie. they'll move to another location
- whenever you do and always run away from battle unless trapped. After
- running into them for the first time, you can track their movements
- with the PokeDex. Using Fly or moving in a way that involves the screen
- fading out causes them to move to a random location.
- - Getting that first encounter could take quite a bit of time. You'll
- want to use Repel with a lead Pokemon that's between Lv36-39. That way,
- if the Lati is on the Route you're on, it should only take a few seconds
- to encounter it. Otherwise, you might have to go through a few normal
- battles first. Probably the best way to find a Lati is to surf between
- Routes 124, 126, and 127.
- × There are some Routes the Latis never go to: 101-102, 104-109, 113-116.
- - I would advise against using a Master Ball unless you have an extra
- one and can't think of any other use for it. When not using a MB, start
- with a fast (93+ Spd) Pokemon with Thunder Wave (Zapdos, Raichu,
- Electabuzz) or Hypnosis (Gardevoir). Since Lati has Refresh, paralysis
- won't last, but the purpose is to stall it so Sableye can get Mean Look
- in. Getting a Sableye requires a trade in Ruby. The highest level ones
- can be found at the Sky Pillar in Sapphire (Lv50), but if you don't
- have access to that, just get one at VR (Lv40+). That'll do just fine,
- as they learn Mean Look at Lv45.
- - I wouldn't bother re-rolling the Latis' stats. Besides, the only thing
- you can affect is the Nature, as the Latis will always have very low IVs
- (mostly 0) due to a programming error.
- - With the SS Ticket, you can reach the Battle Tower, which I have no
- interest in.
- - If you complete the Hoenn Pokedex, Birch will give you a pat on the
- back, and that's it.
- - E players will now be forced to choose which Lati they want to unlock:
- Red for Latias, Blue for Latios.
- - E: You will now obtain the National Dex.
- - E: You can now fight the gym leaders again. Rematching them doesn't
- work the same way as it does with normal trainers.
- Sky Pillar (Route 131)
- Boss: Rayquaza Lv70
- - Mach Bike required.
- - Pretty good xp (1250). Enemy types: PSN-FLY, GHO-DRK / STL, GRD-PSY, GHO.
- - Ideal stats:
- 245 HP, 233 Atk, 150 Def, 233 SAT, 150 SDF, 158 Spd (Neutral)
- - If you're not using a Master Ball, you're going to have a pretty hard
- time. It's got Outrage (15), Fly (15), Extremespeed (5) and Rest (10).
- Route 110
- Item: Bead Mail
- - The last item the Trick Master gives you is just something you can use
- to decorate your secret base.
- Route 119 (E)
- - Talk to the guy at the Weather Institute to trigger a place where you
- can encounter Groudon or Kyogre.
- Desert Underpass (E)
- Item (nc): Root Fossil / Claw Fossil
- - Accessed from the Fossil Maniac's house. Whichever fossil you didn't
- get earlier can be found here.
- Safari Zone (E)
- Items: Big Pearl, Nugget
- Items (h): PP Up, Full Restore, Rare Candy, Zinc
- - Two new areas. New Pokemon of note: Hoothoot, Mareep, Aipom, Sunkern,
- Pineco, Gligar, Snubbull, Shuckle, Teddiursa, Houndour, Stantler, Miltank.
- SS Tidal (E)
- Items (nc): TM49 (Snatch), Leftovers
- - You can now board the ferry at Slateport.
- - After your first trip to Lilycove, the Battle Frontier becomes available.
- Battle Frontier (E)
- Items: HP Up, Carbos
- Items (h): Iron, Zinc, Calcium, Protein
- - Upon entering the frontier, you'll be given the Frontier Pass. This is
- basically just an upgrade for your Trainer Card.
- - There's a guy here who can tell you a little about any Pokémon's IVs.
- He'll tell you how good their IVs are on average and which stat has the
- highest IV.
- - There's one fixed Sudowoodo encounter here.
- Meteor Falls (E)
