  1. If you’re doing that then your fundamental power is the right
  2. to take actions. You can use your game traits to do stuff. You can
  3. say, “I do this,” or “I do that,” meaning your character by ‘I.’
  4. This doesn’t mean that your actions will do what you want
  5. them to.
  6. It just means—
  7. The game is built on the assumption that you can always
  8. do stuff.
  9. This isn’t philosophy or a manifesto. It’s just how the rules are
  10. designed. You could have an ability that helps you wake up fast,
  11. so you’re allowed to use your abilities even when you’re asleep.
  12. You could have a character who’s really good at reacting quickly—so nothing ever happens “too fast for you to react.”
  13. Sometimes your actions are pointless. Sometimes you’re trying to do stuff that is just plain beyond what your character can do.
  14. If your character is a normal human, and you take an action like
  15. “I catch that falling star,” then maybe all that happens is that you
  16. run down the beach and realize too late that it’s actually extremely
  17. far away. If your character is on a fishing boat in a storm trying
  18. desperately to bring a forty-foot halibut in, and you take an action
  19. like “I play a quick game of tennis,” then maybe all that happens
  20. is that people blink at you and then say, “OK, and, moving on.”
