  1. Rhythm has a meter
  2. Often with some rhyme
  3. But Langston Hughes didn’t always do this all the time,
  4. So I don’t really know
  5. Just what I should do
  6. But if I want a grade I guess I’ll have to muscle through.
  7.
  8. You see, Miz DeMare
  9. (note the Miz, Miz DeMare)
  10. I need a point of reference,
  11. I need something to compare
  12. But I’ve only seen two poems by this man, though I’m aware
  13. That the Internet is bounteous; I can’t bring myself to care.
  14.
  15. To tell the truth
  16. (I say, forsooth)
  17. I’ve written something good already—
  18. A pretentious load of blather
  19. but it’s stable and it’s steady.
  20. The only issue that I have is that it’s in free verse
  21. Because, well, to be frank, to that form I am averse.
  22. If you would like,
  23. I will hand it in with this,
  24. But really, I think with it there’s something quite amiss.
  25. Don’t ask me what it is, though,
  26. I’m sure I couldn’t find
  27. Whatever phantom’s wreaking havoc about it in my mind.
  28.
  29. I’m not quite sure
  30. (is it obscure?)
  31. If this poem has a point.
  32. It may have started with something, but now may disappoint.
  33. The truth is that I’m tired
  34. Slightly wired and can’t concentrate,
  35. So right now poetry is not something that I can contemplate.
  36.
  37. This is my poem
  38. (just don’t show'em)
  39. For English III.
  40. Be it good or be it bad, it’s part of you and part of me.
  41. (And for that, I am quite sorry.)
