In simple terms, a Celestial Foundation is the vessel for a world, and could be considered the world in and of itself. On top of these foundations are placed the various things making up that world, and that is where intelligent life forms live. This is of course on a conceptual level, so, for example, in the world that Yogiri and Tomochika originally came from, one can say that the universe was laid on top of that foundation. In the world they are currently in, the land and sea are laid directly on top of the foundation instead. In short, the Celestial Foundation is what an observer would refer to as the base of the world.

There are countless Celestial Foundations, all floating in a space known as the “Sea.” The individual foundations are like bubbles in this Sea. By the way, as we are comparing it to the ocean, the Sea also has a depth. If foundations are at the same relative depth, traveling between them is simple. Moving to a foundation at a lower depth is even easier, but moving up in the Sea is much more difficult. Doing so requires an enormous amount of energy. That is one of the reasons it is not so easy for Yogiri and Tomochika to return to their own world.

Now that you know about Celestial Foundations, let’s talk about the Foundation Eaters. They are creatures inhabiting the Sea, also referred to as “Deep Sea Fish.” They can move freely throughout the Sea, and feed off the foundations. In short, they are beings that eat worlds.

For some worlds with higher-level intelligences like gods, the situation is different, but in most cases the residents of those worlds have no way of perceiving the Foundation Eaters. The worlds those creatures consume are completely devoured and chewed. For the unfortunate residents, it is like existence itself simply stops without warning.

The behavior of the Foundation Eaters is also easy enough to predict. They swim around in the Sea, and if they happen upon a foundation, they eat it. If they meet with any resistance, they will fight, but if they feel they can’t win or that it’s not worth the trouble, they will run away.

While that is the limit of their instincts, in the vast span of eternity, a small number of them have managed to awaken a greater level of intelligence within themselves. Once that happens, their behavior becomes much more idiosyncratic, but in the end they always try to make contact with the intelligences within the foundations themselves. For such self-aware creatures, the Sea is a place of endless boredom.

簡単 に 言っ て しまえ ば、 天 盤 は、 世界 の 器 で あり、 世界 そのもの だ。 　 天 盤 の 上 に、 その 世界 を 構成 する 様々 な もの が 載っ て い て、 そこ には 何らかの 知的生命 体 が 棲息 し て いる。 　 それ は 概念的 な もの で あっ て、 たとえば 夜霧 たち が 元 い た 世界 では 宇宙 が 天 盤 に 載っ て いる し、 今 いる 世界 では、 天 盤 の 上 に 海 と 大地 が 直接 載っ て いる。 　 つまり、 その 世界 の 主 な 観察 者 が 認知 する 世界 の 土台 と なる もの が 天 盤 という こと だ。 　 その 天 盤 は 無数 に 存在 し て い て、 その 天 盤 を 内包 する のが、〝 海〟 と 呼ば れる 空間 だっ た。 天 盤 は、〝 海〟 の 中 に 浮かぶ 泡 の よう な もの なの だ。 　 ちなみに、 海 に 喩え て いる よう に、 この 空間 には 深度 が 存在 する。 深度 が 同じ 天 盤 同士 なら 行き来 は 簡単 だ し、 下位 の 天 盤 へ 移動 する のは さらに 容易 なの だ が、 問題 は 上位 の 天 盤 へ 移動 しよ う と し た 場合 だ。 　 この 場合 には 莫大 な エネルギー が 必要 と なる。 夜霧 たち が そう 簡単 に 元 の 世界 に 帰れ ない 理由 の 一つ だ。さて、 天 盤 が 何 かが わかっ た ところ で、 天 盤 喰らい に つい て だ。 　 これ は〝 海〟 に 棲息 する 生き物 で、〝 深海魚〟 とも 呼ば れ て いる。 　〝 海〟 の 中 を 自在 に 泳ぎ、 天 盤 を 糧 に 生きる。 つまり 世界 を 喰らう 存在 だっ た。 　 その 世界 に 神 と 呼ば れる よう な 高位 の 知性 体 が 存在 すれ ば 話 は 別 だ が、 たいてい の 場合 は、 天 盤 喰らい の 存在 に 気付く こと すら でき ない。 　 世界 を 丸ごと 食い潰さ れ、 咀嚼 さ れる の だ。 その 世界 の 住人 から すれ ば、 何 の 前触れ も なく、 わけ が わから ない まま 全て の 存在 が 消失 する こと に なる。 　 天 盤 喰らい の 行動 原理 は 単純 で、〝 海〟 の 中 を うろうろ と 泳ぎ 回り、 天 盤 に 気付け ば それ を 喰らう。 抵抗 に あえ ば 戦う し、 敵 わ ない、 もしくは 面倒 だ と 判断 すれ ば 逃げ出す。 そんな 程度 の 本能 しか 持た ない 存在 なの だ が、 悠久 の 時 を 過ごす うち に、 知性 に 目覚める 者 も 少ない ながら あらわれる。 　 天 盤 喰らい が 知性 に 目覚め た 場合 に 取る 行動 は 様々 なの だ が、 最終 的 には 天 盤 内 の 知性 体 と 接触 しよ う と する のが 常 だっ た。〝 海〟 は、 知性 の ある 者 にとって 退屈 すぎる 場所 だ から だ。
