  1. ---
  2.
  3. so here you have it, without further ado, in the order i'd
  4. think would work out best:
  5.
  6. ---
  7.
  8. RED2.2 Remove Empty Directories
  9. informative, not a bad layout, configurable
  10. essentially a single .EXE
  11. slow deletions, method used for
  12. deletions is immaterial
  13.
  14. Nuker1.3 Empty Folder Nuker
  15. stand-lone, basic, but for a quick open & go, close,
  16. looks like it should work fine, & correctly
  17.
  18. 4Dots EmptyFolderCleanerSetup_11
  19. a HUGE 11 MB... but most of it are translations
  20. possibility of adware too. unable to /install/
  21. sandboxed, but i've seen a number of programs today
  22. that have not installed sandboxed. not sure why?
  23.
  24. probably the most configurable, certainly the most
  25. ODD in its working. some (odd) descrepancies in
  26. what its folder /tree/ showed vs. what its folder
  27. /list/ came up with? appears it would work OK,
  28. but not seeing, where i'd thought i should, makes
  29. me a bit hesitant
  30.
  31. Puran Delete Empty Folders_11
  32. easily the FASTEST scanner, must be reading MFT
  33. (the others aren't necessarily slouches)
  34. essentially a single .EXE
  35. MUST be run as ADMIN
  36. ADD THAT *Internet Explorer* component into the mix,
  37. so I don't trust it
  38. otherwise, generally basic, but will do the job
  39.
  40. ---
  41.
  42. FAIL:
  43.
  44. TOO SLOW
  45. 1Hour DelEmpty_12
  46. (standalone ahk) TOO SLOW, so forget about it
  47.
  48. BOTTOM-MOST
  49. FMS EmptyFolderRemover_16
  50. ListeningPC FastEmptyFolderFinder_074
  51. ListeningPC FastEmptyFolderFinder_2600
  52. all alike in that they find the BOTTOM-MOST dirs,
  53. ignore empty parents. so should work, but you'd
  54. have to run these programs mutiple (perhaps MANY)
  55. times before it would clean out what the others
  56. found in one shot
  57.
  58. ---
  59.
  60. double-click on a entry almost always opens the dir in explorer
  61. all use 25% CPU on scan (1 of 4 cores)
  62.
  63. ---
  64.
  65. *** TOO SLOW, DONE
  66.
  67. DelEmpty_12 (standalone ahk).exe
  68. 4min:17sec & going strong
  69. HOURS, that sums it up, will take hours on a BIG tree
  70. & oddly, during this time, most everthing works, you can sort the columns, you can resize
  71. the window, you can select/d folders ...
  72. NO WAY TO PAUSE/CANCEL ... so once it starts, it either will finish or you must close the
  73. program entirely
  74. OTHERWISE, layout is nice & clear
  75. SLOW, SLOW, SLOW, & since so SLOW & not being able to PAUSE ... makes this a FAIL
  76. ESSENTIALLY "go with what i selected" (& in this case even more so because there is NO
  77. deselect all!!)
  78. DELETION, heh, well you can EVEN DEL while it is still doing its SCAN, though in the end it
  79. would take SOOO long to finish, i'll never find out just what it can do
  80. FAIL
  81. an "auto hot key" program (by skrommel or something)
  82. SLOW as molasses
  83. poor interface
  84. poor folder selection
  85. SCAN lists ALL folders, with count of files, folders, programs, size, - REGARDLESS of empty or not
  86. SLOWEST by far out of any of them
  87. 0 Files | X Folders | 0 Size, means that a DIR is empty, with X number of subfolders within
  88. - that is an interesting way of looking at it (the X number that is).
  89. better then "multiple as ~xxx~ displays
  90. it also gives you context data to sibling folders that may not be empty,
  91. so in that respect it is presented well
  92. it preselects (checkmarks) only folders that are empty
  93. ... let me go make a coffee...
  94. CPU usage is 25% (1 of 4 cores)
  95. NO efficient way to make selections, the ONLY method, on longer listings, is to just use what
  96. they've preselected, no way to DESELECT enmass, no way to SELECT enmass, have to be
  97. careful NOT to inadvertently select a DIR with something in it
  98.
  99. ---
  100.
  101. *** essentially the same as NUKER, *BUT* ONLY FINDING BOTTOM-MOST FOLDER, SO *FAIL*
  102.
  103. FMS EmptyFolderRemoverSetup_16.exe,
  104. 20s, kind of hard to read, has "folder name" in front, kind of immaterial,
  105. can sort by "folder name" or "full path" (immediate), check/u all essentially only choices
  106. DEL is only option, so can't DeL to RECYCLE or ZIP or ...
  107. HELP attempts to open browser <-SUCKS !!!
  108. 462 TOPLEVEL DIRS left after DEL (in an INSTANT)
  109. THIS ONE HAD *FAR* MORE (TONS ACTUALLY) unreadable DIRS compared to any of the others
  110. uniextracts, then just a single .EXE
  111. BASIC, no options program
  112. ONLY will find the bottom most empty folder as "empty"
  113. IOW ... c:/tmp/full/empty1/empty2, will only find empty2 as empty, even though empty1 is empty
  114. too. suppose that after a first run, a second run would then find empty1 & be able to del
  115. that?
  116. REALLY QUICK, surprisingly so, you could run this 3-times in sucession before others, once
  117. a bit hard to read, text is a bit light against pale-blue background
  118. CAN check/uncheck ALL, but otherwise, no easy way to make "mass" individual selections
  119. (mark, shift+end-mark does not work), so other then either EVERYTHING, or uncheck
  120. all & select only a few select DIRS
  121. can EXPORT LIST to TXT, HTM, CSV, XML
  122.
  123. ---
  124.
  125. *** UNDERSTANDABLE, INFORMATIVE, presented with pertinent information
  126. can manually prune a particular [listed] tree (empty or not)
  127. can manually ignore particular trees, though time consuming
  128. YOU BASICALLY HAVE TO GO WITH WHAT IT FOUND, but that isn't necessarily bad ?
  129.
  130. red-v2.2-portable.zip
  131. 36s, deleting (in simulation mode) looks like it will be relatively slow?
  132. REMEMBERS last selected DIR on restart
  133. SETTINGS retained on restart
  134. LOTS of icons, but not so easy to discern
  135. ESSENTIALLY only an expanded-tree listing of folders
  136. ESSENTIALLY the only DEL option is to "go with what they found"
  137. DELETION is kind of time consuming as it scrolls the list, marking each deleted folder with
  138. a checkmark, but otherwise leaving the listing as is (though you can't do anything with it)
  139. 462 DIRS, but couldn't read node6.* ?
  140. unzip & run
  141. CONFIGUREABLE options
  142. option to consider empty DIRS with 0-byte files within as "empty"
  143. GOING to be VERY difficult to pick & choose on longer directory trees
  144. RIGHT-CLICK, DEL, has *NO* confirmation & can be *DANGEROUS* !!!
  145. can be set to consider:
  146. *.tmp
  147. desktop.ini
  148. Thumbs.db ....... etc. as "empty"
  149. tree mode give context ("reference") that is helpful, insightful
  150. has a log: found: 2561, checked: 32321, time: 0:37
  151. LOGS are not retained, overwritten on each new run, so backup if want...
  152.
  153. ---
  154.
  155. Puran Delete Empty Folders,1.exe
  156. 25s, so fast (REALLY FAST)
  157. ESSENTIALLY Select ALL/None are your only options
  158. DOES NOT show subDIR, only the TOPMOST, but does note that subDIRS are included as "multiple"
  159. CLEAN enough LIST
  160. DELETION is kind of slow as it scrolls through the list, but not bad
  161. 462 DIRS left after DEL, with only www.multiupload unreadable (no others had that one)
  162. needs ADMIN rights
  163. stand-alone, after extracting from "puran"
  164. individual download is exactly the same as above, but incl help & DEFExclude.txt & ...
  165. VERY FAST
  166. unlike EFR, it finds topmost empty DIRS as empty instead of bottom-most
  167. IOW ... c:/tmp/full/empty1/empty2, finds empty1 (which also includes empty2) as empty & is
  168. listed as "Multiple" to signify that there are (empty) subdirs to the selected directory
  169. VERY FAST, so it must be searching the MFT
  170. *IT MOST LIKELY *CONNECTS* TO THE INTERNET AT RUNTIME ?*
  171. YES, seems so, but using WFC, blocking OUTbound, it can't "connect", heh!
  172. IT is actually an "IE" window that it has, you can actually Ctl+N to open an IE window, heh!
  173. FOUND: 601 folders, but that must be only TOPMOST, rather then total == 2000+
  174. BETTER, by far, then GLARY, though you are attached to the internet when you run
  175. SO forget about it!
  176. (BOTH PURAN & GLARY open DLLHOST, at least when run sandboxed)
  177.
  178. ---
  179.
  180. *** very basic, but should work, no glaring faults, just eh
  181.
  182. EmptyFolderNuker_130.exe
  183. 39s
  184. CAN paste a DIR into the picker
  185. CLEAN enough LIST
  186. Select All/None are about your only options, otherwise can only pick/choose 1 at a time
  187. NO other options
  188. DELETION 462 DIRS, said it wasn't going to use RECYCLE but there was "something" maybe
  189. related, but then i see nothing to indicate that RECYCLE was used?
  190. ONLY node6 not readable ...?
  191. stand-alone
  192. quick
  193. FIRST you pick the directory (paste works too :-) )
  194. THEN you're given the results
  195. picks the TOPMOST empty directory (better) but does not identify that there are (may be) subdirs
  196. can save found DIRS to a text file
  197.
  198. puran & empty returned the same results in a similar manner
  199.
  200. ---
  201.
  202. *** THIS ONE, FINDS THE BOTTOM-MOST DIR, *IGNORING* empty parents, so this is fail
  203.
  204. Fast Empty Folder Finder_2600.exe
  205. though this one is PRETTY, which sucks
  206. uses the concept of "scan locations", which you preset or add/remove to/from
  207.
  208.
  209. *** THIS ONE, FINDS THE BOTTOM-MOST DIR, *IGNORING* empty parents, so this is fail
  210.
  211. Fast Empty Folder Finder Setup_0.7.4.112.exe (older version)
  212. 59s+ (i think it was still filling its LIST)
  213. REALIZED, the bottom panel is for IGNORED "files" (folders?)
  214. HAS a DEL to RECYCLE, though it does not stick between runs & i would not trust it
  215. SIMPLE enough, clear enough LIST
  216. NO select ALL, but can do Ctrl+A, or set+mark & Shift+Mark ...
  217. DRAG & DROP IS NICE, but don't DROP into the IGNORE BOX ;-)
  218. ACTUALLY the time is LONGER because it has to go through its "gyrations" as it fills LIST
  219. (& then again when you Ctrl+A..., YES, when you Ctrl+A)
  220. DELETION again goes through gyrations
  221. 462 DIRS, 213.174.140.47 & node6, but not nolimits, were not readable ... ?
  222. ON CLOSE it said, "updater could not be found, reinstall"
  223. website is gone, but S had it
  224. poor DIR picker, worse then most, though it does revert to the last selected DIR on next check
  225. no way to check all, or uncheck all ...
  226. relatively quick
  227. double-click does NOT open the dir
  228. has a "currently viewing" window, which is ALWAYS empty, otherwise that dir would not be included
  229. in the listing, so why is it even there? (at least you can resize it)
  230. CONFIRMATION on DEL, though it does not say which or how many DIRS it is going to ZAP
  231. finds the BOTTOM-MOST dir (not as good)
  232. CAN drag & drop a DIR into the program
  233. scan finished quick enough
  234. Ctrl+A (which was a bit slow), SPACE, allowed selecting all
  235. can delete to recycle bin
  236. CTRL+A -> actually i think it was, yes it is, loading "viewing" each folder's (empty) contents
  237. in order - DUMB
  238.
  239. ---
  240.
  241. *** the ODDIST, most NON-STANDARD of the lot
  242. kind of like the idea that it stores a back of the deleted DIRs in a ZIP file
  243. but not sure of its value? [it stores this in %appdata% or so]
  244. would seem to be a better method then Recycle Bin (clogging that up) or
  245. deleteing directly, as no recovery from that ...
  246.
  247. EmptyFolderCleanerSetup_11.exe
  248. 37s
  249. USE DirTREE instead of file picker
  250. ODD on first glance, but maybe it growns on you
  251. JUNK, use JUNK on "install"
  252. TREE makes it REALLY easy to identify entirely empty BRANCHES
  253. LIKEWISE to identify those that are only partially empty
  254. BUT, no way to expand the entire TREE, at once
  255. FILTERING on LIST (LiST grows on you too) is neat, perhaps
  256. GIVES (persistent) results of the scan
  257. OPTIONS persist on restart
  258. DEFAULT DEL mode is to DEL to a ZIP file (has to be small because everything within is 0 bytes ;-) )
  259. YOU HAVE to right-click a DIR to EXPLORE (most others are a double-click)
  260. KIND of acts like daddies GUI programs, but it grows on you
  261. DELETION deleted to a ZIP file
  262. 462 DIRS, node6, again
  263. APPDATA/roaming has its settings & the backup ZIP
  264. ZIP contained 2561 DIRS in a FLAT structure, numbered 0 - 2560, so there would be NO SUB-DIRS
  265. AFTER DELETION, there was no change, all was as it was before, so you may not have know that
  266. you did in fact do DELETION (if you happened to have forgotten as you write this ;-) )
  267. APPDATA/.../Backup also exists, persists (though of course uses no "space")
  268. OPTIONS has Backup UNDO & PURGE options, ODDLY though it still left the XML & DIRS,
  269. but DELETED the ZIP
  270. WEBSITE is gone, hard to find
  271. HUGE download (a lot of it is languages)
  272. S says *adware*
  273. a bit different layout; Tree on left, results on right
  274. RESULTS scroll *HORIZONTALLY* rather then up & down, make it more difficult to discern
  275. has some options
  276. can ignore 0-byte files
  277. relatively quick
  278. identifies ALL folders, topmost, bottom-most, & in-between, but kind of difficult to read
  279. QUICK
  280. NO drag or drop or any other method to select DIR except for the built-in folder tree
  281. though that does allow you to select dis-jointed DIRS for scanning at the same
  282. time
  283. LISTING: Empty Tree | Empty Folder List | Excluded Folders
  284. GOOD CLEAR icons, clearly showing EMPTY vs JUNK (thumbs.db...) vs "Normal (not empty)
  285. TREE is flat-mode, but can be expanded, but NO way to do that enmass! (no Expand-ALL)
  286. you can select/de in either the TREE or LIST, & it reflects, automatically in both
  287. LIST can be filtered, so only ".vk", so in that manner you can filter, then select-all
  288. which will ONLY select the filtered items...
  289. TREE topmost level does not show "partial-selects" in subDIRS, even though they are there
  290. Scanned: 32321, Empty: 2561, Junk: 0
  291. has a log: found: 2561, checked: 32321, time: 0:37
  292. ACTUALLY, using filtering on the LIST, the TREE can be incrementally built
  293. so ".vk", SelectAll, "socks", SelectAll, then the tree has both .vk+socks
  294. selected. NOT that obvious what is going on, but once you realize ...
  295.
  296. same exact stats as RED
  297.
  298.
  299. ---
  300.
  301. glary utilities, eff, 'Empty Folders Finder'
  302. must run as ADMIN
  303. "menu" driven, so first you must select a drive or folder to scan
  304. all-none-invert
  305. shows TOPMOST folder & path
  306. with + to expand to see the actual tree, BUT NO METHOD TO EXPAND-ALL
  307. so it would drive you crazy if you actually wanted to see...
  308. selecting ANY of the boxes within a tree, selects the ENTIRE tree,
  309. so if dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4 & you've expanded that tree & ALL you want
  310. to del is dir4, YOU CAN NOT. selecting dir4 SELECTS THE WHOLE TREE,
  311. so 1/2/3/ & 4/
  312. GLARY HAS A *TON* OF *dll* *bpl* files that it needs in order to actually run
  313. so it is NOT like you can simply copy that single, small file (eff.exe) & be
  314. done with it, you must have the whole mishbuchka, so FORGET ABOUT IT
  315. (seems, untried, that it makes some sort of backup, because it has a 'Restore'
  316. button?)
  317.
  318. newest version, 3.8 vs 2.5 or so, is MUCH quicker in scanning, & while both versions
  319. come up with *most* of the same DIRs, there are still some in one not in the other,
  320. & some in the other not in the one, SO THIS GIVES ME *NO CONFIDENCE* in the utility!
  321.
  322. ---
  323.
  324. MEM USAGE (scanning S:/XC/2/) :
  325.
  326. RED 50 MB
  327. Nuker 13
  328. DelEmpt 27, 30 when FINALLY finished
  329. fastE 42, 75 at some point later 25% CPU during scan
  330. Empty 15, 25% CPU
  331. Empty C 56
  332. pURAN 22, but can be much higher >100 during scan 25% CPU
