- Me: I didn't like it
- Friend: Rick and Morty?
- Are you crazy
- That episode was hilarious
- Me: Okay I guess I'm crazy
- Friend: "there's no such thing as gaslighting. You made it up it was fucking crazy"
- Also the end credits scene xP
- The part where the holograms were protesting
- The part where they were eating the principal
- Me:
- > "there's no such thing as gaslighting. You made it up it was fucking stupid"
- I hated this line. Because that's we need, more dialogue that reduces real and dangerous concepts into buzzwords that get taken down
- > The part where they were eating the principal
- This was gross
- Friend:
- > I hated this line. Because that's we need, more dialogue that reduces real and dangerous concepts into buzzwords that get taken down
- Umm it was making fun of people who umm it was making fun of toxic men who don't like when people use the word gas lighting
- Me: No it wasn't
- That's your interpretation
- Friend: Umm it was pretty obvious
- [CONTEXT: a male and female anchor were reporting on Morty killing a bunch of people (yes typical gross violence); the male anchor said "up next: this story"; the female anchor added "but first: this story"; the male anchor accused her of always "doing this" i.e. undermining him; the female anchor denied it and accused him of gaslighting her; the male anchor said gasligthing doesn't exist and she's fucking crazy; end of scene].
- Me: No. It wasn't
- Friend: The joke is he gas lit her
- Me: You don't understand gaslighting
- He probably did but we had no context of their history
- So, no evidence to support it
- And he got the final line
- And said gaslighting is a made up term
- Friend: He said you don't know what it is you're crazy
- Meaning he was gaslighting her
- yes
- that's gaslighting
- Me: Ehhhh kinda? But not exactly
- Like, technically, yes, he was denying reality to her. But that's not really the best example of gaslighting. And he still got the last word
- So people can just as easily come away with this episode feeling validated because their favorite cartoon just bashed liberals
- Friend: no it was bashing liberal bashers
- Me: No that's just your interpretation. That the male anchor was the bad one
- Friend: no i think i twas pretty obvious
- Me: Okay if you're gonna be annoying
- Goodbye
- ~LATER~
- Friend: so what was your interpretation?
- they were just having a woman be bullied cuz it's funny?
- Me: I think it was meant to be ironic
- But it could be interpreted either way and that's what I don't like
- They've been guilty of this for years
- Friend: i get what you mean and we've had this debate but i always prefered satire over blatant commentary
- and it kinda sucks you arne't allowde to be subtle with your shade now
- Me: *yawn*
- Friend: ?
- Me: I don't empathize with that sentiment
- You have a platform it comes with responsibility. That's life
- Friend: so there's no room for satire?
- Me: That's not what I said and I'm tired of this conversation
