1. ------------
2. City 08, District 01, Odaiba.
3. 2 Hours After Earthquake.
4. "Are you out of your mind?! My men can't hold this thing off! We need Striders out here, synths, anything you got!"
5. The Civil Protection officer, a hardened, crusty Squad Leader stood hunched over the radio of his APC. The top turret chugged away at a constant "chunka-chunka-chunka-chunka," rocking the chassis on which rested his already shaking arm. Debris from the buildings fell around them like crumbs from bread, and the smell of smoke and plasma propellant filled the air. Each step from the monster shook the ground like tremors of an earthquake.
6.
7. The monster was less than 200 yards ahead of them, and this squad leader stood, peering up as if it were a skyscraper.
8.
9. Dozens of citizens, many of them injured, ran amok in the street, though most made a concerted effort to run in the opposite direction from the monster. An elderly man was shouting at them in Japanese. While none of the officers could understand it, his tone heavily suggested appeals for them to flee quickly.
10.
11. The squad leader tried to ignore it, lest he lose even his own composure. He continued to argue with the Sectorial Commander, barking into it like an old general. "Sir, the monster is 200 yards to our front, and our weapons are doing nothing! We need Striders at sector-"
12.
13. He paused, returning his gaze to the monster. It had turned around to face them, stopping for a moment his barrage on the harbor. The squad leader lowered his radio for a moment, just in time to see the ridges on the monster's back brighten to a brilliant electric blue.
14.
15. "LOOK OUT!" He tossed the radio inside the hatch, hastily scrambling into the vehicle. He turned around, extending a hand to the elderly citizen who still remained in the street. When the man did not voluntarily come forward, he yanked him in, then slammed the hatch shut. "GET DOWN!" He barked at the driver and the gunner, the former of whom had no idea what was happening.
16.
17. Not that he had to wait to find out, however. Soon a bright blue-white flash shone through the windshield, and the air around the APC heated rapidly. Looking up, the Squad Leader saw the outside gun bubbling for an instant, before the entire APC rumbled violently. Instead of the massive explosion he had expected, Nothing came after the brief rumble. He lifted his head up, slowly but surely.
18.
19. The entire street was scorched, as was the outside of their vehicle. Thankfully, the metal had been strong enough to resist an indirect hit, but the Squad Leader knew that it wouldn't survive another one. He let out a long sigh, then tapped the driver on the shoulder. "Pull us back, slowl-"
20.
21. Without warning, the occupants were thrown against the side of the hull, something very large smacking the vehicle like a heavenly golf club. The Squad Leader swore profusely, clinging onto the handrails for dear life as he realized the APC had been cast into the air.
22.
23. Shit...Shit...
24.
25. He could hear other debris smack the hull, although he couldn't bear to look outside. Mustering up his courage, he called to the others:
26.
27. "02, 04! Old Man! Brace for Imp-"
28.
29. Just as soon as their flight began, so soon it ended. The Squad Leader felt a jolt, a sudden stop to their uncontrolled spin. A jolt, just enough for him to realize he was being catapulted towards the windshield.
30.
31. Then there was darkness. Nothing but darkness.
