2019 Game List

Besides full-time work and the stable income that came along with it, 2019 was kinda trash for me. Moved away from a lot of friends, went back to living at home after graduating, and went through my worst breakup that I'm still trying to get over.

But I did play a lot of video games and some were kinda cool so maybe let's focus on that. I'm going to have a few lists: games I finished to completion, games I started but never properly finished, games I still want to get to but didn't have time for this year, and finally games I'm looking forward to next year.
These lists will be generally arranged in the order in which I played these games. Thingss on these lists aren't exclusively games that released in 2019, and they also don't have to be first playthroughs. Let's start.

Katamari Damacy Reroll (Switch):
Katamari Damacy is one of those games that I had known about for years and figured was probably pretty fun, but I didn't really have much of a desire to play it even when the remake was announced. I would pretty much consider this one an impulse buy induced by peer pressure, but I don't regret it after playing through the game. This thing has charm oozing out of every orifice, and on top of that, it's fun as hell. This is definitely one of the most satisfying and wholeheartedly loveable games I've ever played even if there's not a whole lot to it. This is a game that I would feel comfortable recommending to anyone, even people who don't play games.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PC):
The gameplay in this one didn't wow me, but the production value and over-the-top set pieces absolutely won me over. I have difficulty recommending this game to play because I feel like it would probably be just as fun most of the time to just watch someone else to through it, but I can definitely say that this game is something special. Check it out if you like Platinum Games and/or ridiculous cutscenes and story telling.

Marvel's Spider-man (PS4):
I'm glad I played this game mostly just because I like to stay on top of what's new in AAA gaming, and I will say that my expectations were exceeded, but I didn't exactly set them very high. The combat has more depth than I thought and the movement is definitely the highlight of the experience, but the repetitive nature of the game makes it a slog at times. This one gets a melodramatic thumbs up from me, but I highly doubt I'll be revisiting it any time soon.

Resident Evil 2 Remake (PC):
I think Resident Evil is a pretty cool series. I loved Revelations when it came out on 3DS and ended up playing RE 4 at some point afterwards. However, I've never been too fond of the original trilogy. I know some people love those games, but to me they haven't aged super well. Needless to say, I was excited when I saw that this game probably looked most similar in style to Revelations. This was the first big release of the year and it's the first time I can remember buying a game on PC at launch so the whole thing was kind of exciting for me. I think this game turned out really well, both as a remake and as a new game for new players. This is definitely one of the best games I ended up playing this year.

Doom 2016 (PC):
I believe this is my 3rd or 4th playthrough of Doom and it just gets better and better each time. This is a game that gets more fun the more you begin to master it. This playthrough was a 100% run on Nightmare difficulty, and I was surprised at how I didn't get my ass kicked nearly as much as I expected. I won't go into too much detail because this game has been out for awhile but if you haven't played this yet, what are you doing?? It's like $5 from sites like GreenManGaming. Pick this one up if you haven't already.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (PC):
I'm pretty happy this game won Game of the Year at the Game Awards because I really feel like it deserves it. From Software took their signature style in a pretty interesting direction and I'm excited to see where they end up going next. I think I ended up beating this game 8 times or something crazy like that this year, so you know I was in love with it. Definitely highly recommend it.

Pony Island (PC):
This was a really interesting game but I don't think it's meta, 4th wall breaking style has aged that well even though it's not that old of a game simply because several other games have done it so much better since its release. That's not to say it was a bad game, but I will say that I'm glad it didn't overstay its welcome. If you need to kill some time one afternoon, this might be a pretty good way to do that.

Persona 5 (PS4):
I had a feeling I'd like this one even though it's not exactly a genre if find myself enjoying often. This game is kind of amazing even if I have a ton of problems with it. Streaming this might have just been some of the most fun I've ever had in Twitch. This game is great, and I'm really glad that I played it.

Katawa Shoujo (PC):
After finishing Persona 5, I had a big anime girl shaped hole in my life that I needed to fill and for some reason I figured the way to do that was to play through Katawa Shoujo again. The first time I played this game was back in 2012, and let's just say that I was a big idiot back then and kind of didn't get a whole lot out of it. I enjoyed it back then, but not nearly as much as this time around. I think this is a game that can teach a lot of people things about themselves that they maybe never knew. It definitely gave me some new perspectives to consider. I have a bit of trouble recommending this one just because I realize that it's probably too weeb for most people, but I can easily say that this is one of the most important games to me that I played this year, and I'll probably never stop thinking about it.

Enter the Gungeon (PC):
I picked this one up because I got it for free and kind of had no idea what to expect. I knew that a lot of people enjoyed this one but I didn't really know anything about it. I could've missed this game so easily, and I'm so so happy that I didn't. This game is fun as hell and I put so many hours into it this year. I still think I'm pretty trash at it, but that's all part of the fun. If you want a no nonsense fun game to keep you busy, this is my recommendation.

Return of the Obra Dinn (PC):
I'm actively trying to not think about this game so that one day I might forget all of the puzzles and be able to play it again. Don't ruin your first playthrough.
