  1. so, in order to summarize and repeat myself, I was needlessly and innocently called out twice, for acting like everyone acts here
  2. Panda shot me a forum PM with the classic "pls don't make useless posts" line; I explained it to her; she hasn't responded back but I guess she got it
  3. however, Pixel was being chiding, aggressive and close-minded, to a point where I figured that continuing to talk with him would be inefficacious
  4. I just want to be a member without feeling straitened over trivial stuff, without fearing about how every word of mine would be conceived from someone higher up
  5. it was all fine for several months

  9. Re: staff meeting
  10.
  11. first off it's hard to organize for me
  12. I use my laptop in the kitchen for both work and free time and often enough my mom is around
  13. and my activity is "clandestine" often so it's impossible to say when I'm fully available
  14. if I'm supposed to have a talk at the same time, I can't keep the browser tab open to respond in time
  15. I also need some time to order my thoughts and articulate them
  16. but, first and foremost, what would it be needed for? this is not highly dramatic nevertheless
  17. all I ask for is what I said above and it's on your end
  18. otherwise I'm pleased with seeing that activity is back and stuff gets done
  19.
  20. here's also a story from RL. A few weeks ago there was some controversy in my petanque club over an unconventional playing technique of mine, and my team captain told me abrasively to drop it when he saw it. I complained back that he couldn't dictate that stuff to me, and others beared me out. Then he went on a vacation, and that incident kept me concerned in the meantime. But all that happened is that he was intemperate and he didn't mean it. So, once he came back, he immediately took me by the hand and apologized. He didn't lose his face with that at all, quite the contrary.
  21.
  22. And I'm not even asking for a formal apology here. Just understanding and moving on.

  26. also Re: forum rules revision (I've got a lot to comment)
  27.
  28. "Members must accept staff action and carry on or report an abusive action if it is not justified by the rules"
  29. so, the latter has sort-of happened two times in my case, but why being asked to involve third party instantly? Shouldn't it be desirable to settle it with the person first? I've tried that as often as possible, and the other person of course needs to be willing and open-minded, otherwise I indeed have to contact third party like I did here.
  30.
  31. "backseat moderating/policing other members or the staff will not be tolerated"
  32. so, what exactly is policing, and how does it tie with users caring about the staff since they want the community to be in a good state? Your activity is essential for the presentability of the forums, which itself is essential for the growth of the community with new members. And besides, neither me nor anyone else is overly petty on judging your actions and stalking you, or looking for complaints just for the sake of complaining. Our concerns (both present and past) are usually genuine and reasoned by first-hand observation. However I've experienced much disapproval and indignation for bringing up issues and criticism and the same happened in the past with various threads like "a legitimate request to staff" (Nien).
  33.
  34. "If an action needs to be taken, a report should be made so that an available staff member may handle the situation"
  35. That's exactly how I've always interpreted the purpose of a report button - inform staff about something that suggests an action of theirs. However I got criticized for my reports repeatedly because "many reported posts are not against the rules". In what way in particular? This is also quite a subjective matter.
  36.
  37. And yeah some false positives happen a few times. Keep in mind that reports are neither editable nor retractable. Even if I happen to make a poor report or one that "implies action" - is it really that offensive? You guys decide alone what you're doing with it anyway. The report feature is still essential for your work, and the alternative is backseat moderating, which is frowned up even more. People shouldn't be discouraged from reporting through scrutiny and overly tight guidelines.
  38.
  39. "English - Common posting habits"
  40. ok, the first sentence (formatting, spelling) is considerably contradictory to the practice. We have a good dose of netspeak, casuality and banter etc. on the forums and that's fine. Nevertheless the part about posting habits needs much expanding imo, because 90% of all reports and staff actions are related to bad posting habits (from newbies), or unwritten rules such as forum game threads in Sandbox. Everything that the staff repeatedly comments on should be included in some way. Granted, some newbies and kids don't care about behavior at all, but we also have many who are just inexperienced and who would care about knowing the do's and dont's, so they can have an easened start. And most people who get approached or warned about something would also like to relate to a written source.
