- The hunter’s hard shoulder drove into the Colonel’s chest, driving the air from his lungs and knocking him backward. The older man’s boot heels caught on a plank of the sidewalk and he landed on his back with the hunter slamming down across his knees.
- Simultaneously, a gun racketed and a slug pounded into the adobe wall at the spot where the Colonel had been standing. The hunter twisted around and fired. Across the street, a bandit let his pistol drop, sagged forward and pitched off the edge of a low roof. He landed heavily in the street and lay motionless, the pale dust smoking up around his body.
