- I'm finally making this topic and starting this series. This will be a series that goes over different sabermetric stats. I'm definitely going to make mistakes or fail to mention something, but that's what the topic is for.
- BABIP
- I'll start off with BABIP because I think that's the thing that's hardest for non-saber people to take in. The formula is as follows: http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/e/d/8/ed893b7b0405147c8498db6096fce17e.png
- There are 3 factors that affect BABIP - Defense, Luck, and Talent.
- Defense is quite self-explanatory. Certain defenders can make certain plays, while others can't. A ball might go in through a gap with an average defense, but an elite defense might be able to make the play. Maybe a line drive will go over the head of Yuniesky Betancourt, but Tulo makes the play with ease. A pitcher can't control the defense behind him, and a batter can't control the defense in front of him.
- Luck. As you'll hear some announcers say, sometimes balls just "find the gaps."
