- any% for SDA 44:32
- -- History behind real time, reasons to time that way, pointing out that the community has taken 2 minutes off the game time record despite optimizing for real time (5 minutes real time). (Explanation for change from game time to real time)
- ?- My contribution to this category are pretty minimal, pretty much all of it was developed by the rest of the communities from (SRL, jpn, swede, etc?)
- - shoutout to hotarubi and gari for getting me into super metroid speedruns, and the srl community for taking me in and continuing to make it fun. explaining how out of date hotarubis 32 is and the fact he himself beat it.
- - Mention the new spacetime/xray skips and what this category is exactly (somehow)
- - The run itself, time lost, good stuff, possible 28, what it'll take.
- 100% for sda 1:17:59
- - History of runs, real time, past records, difference between this run and and behemoths pal segmented.
- - shoutout - SRL, dbx, kronicsauce, apathae, epic, behemoth, ???, gari, DESSY (tas/spreadsheet)
- - Kotts picked it up and may beat it soon
- - Dessys new theory tas after this run was done
- - Same explanation on no oob, ETC
- - the run, bad boss luck, good movement
- "Definition for Traditional style Super Metroid any%:
- -Defeats the main four bosses depicted in the statues blocking entrance to Tourian (Kraid, Phantoon, Draygon, Ridley) and goes on to defeat Mother Brain as well and go through the escape sequence.
- -Stays within the boundaries of the map and limits the use of clips to entirely in boundary use (Wrecked Ship ceiling clip, Zebetite Skip)
- -Does not use the GT Code
- -No Abuse of Space/Time Beam or its variants
- The heart and soul of the traditional any% category is to encapsulate the feeling it was to go through the game after first play and try to go through it as fast as possible. All exploits are done with the intention of working around the general design of the game, not the programming and/or its oversights."
- <@zoast> i'd at least like to have your opinions about the switch to real time as well, if nothing else
- <@zoast> but it's up to you of course
- <@Garrison> yeah I don't mind helping

- <@Garrison> like from a history perspective, RTA started with hotarubi obviously with his :31
- <@Garrison> my guess is that he got his :32 with murderbeam then went further and got a :31 with it
- * shyo ([email protected]) has joined #supermetroid
- <@Garrison> and as a sort of final test to himself, he wanted to do the same
- <@Garrison> with realtime
- <@zoast> right
- <@Garrison> so he cut out the use of murderbeam and decided to time from power on to the end of the theme in the credits
- * prinny ([email protected]) Quit (Ping timeout: 141 seconds)
- <@zoast> i know he had two 31's, were both of those videos no murder or w/e?
- <@Garrison> I wonder if I still have hypo's image he made me
- * prinny ([email protected]) has joined #supermetroid
- <Sarah> Standard Japanese RTA timing, basically.
- <@Garrison> the one everyone knows is on his youtube without it
- <@Garrison> but he got another one on nico nico douga
- <@zoast> right, but i remember seeing another one somewhere that waslinked
- <@zoast> yeah
- <@Garrison> unfortunately I'm on a different computer so I don't have anything bookmarked
- * %EpiclyEpic ([email protected]) Quit (Quit: )
- <@Garrison> http://puu.sh/7s4tk.png
- <@Garrison> the link is dead
- <@Garrison> he made a nice image to show me
- <@zoast> ah, damn
- <@Garrison> but yeah, that was basically my justification for pursuing realtime
- <@Garrison> me, msds, kassiuz, dessy etc all raced
- * %Frozencup ([email protected]) Quit (Connection reset by peer)
- <@Garrison> and we'd do stuff like leave ice beam on after a boss and use missiles instead
- <@Garrison> to avoid pause menus
- <@Garrison> when we invited the japanese players to come play, they realized things like skipping spazer would be faster
- <@Garrison> we argued that it would lose more time than it would gain :)
- <@Garrison> we were wrong
- <@zoast> lol
- <@Garrison> when I decided to try and beat hotarubi's time, I decided to skip spazer and stuck with it
- <@Garrison> which lead into skipping ridley tank
- <@Garrison> another thing I argued would be slower at first
- <@Garrison> for a while people would have a new thing
- <@Garrison> like dbx doing fast pillars
- <@Garrison> because at that point we were all still doing normal pillars
- <@zoast> being... green gate room?
- <@Garrison> ye
- <@Garrison> pauseless came from dessy's idea of delaying ice
- <@Garrison> mrlandmaster came up with the original heroshot in red tower
- <@Garrison> 2x came from me and kassiuz messing with it after deciding we didn't like the 4n6 kill
- <@Garrison> like an entire year earlier lol
- <@Garrison> then me, msds, dbx, dessy, krankdud came up with setups
- <@zoast> blueglass brought up red tower when i did sgdq as being named after hero of the day, was that the same strat basically or something like the downgrab or DBJ?
- <@zoast> what was the 4n6 kill?
- <@Garrison> its similar to what you're doing now, only with spazer
- <@zoast> and what about draygon, i think that was basically a tas strat originally based on a dessy comment i read
- <@Garrison> and pausing
- <@Garrison> 2wb basically came from me messing with 4n6 kill and determining it was too hard to be consistent
- <@Garrison> so I wanted to make a method that would defeat her in 2 round w/b as well
- <@Garrison> dbx noticed shinesparking draygon from the back was more likely to give you bluesuit
- <@Garrison> current kill came from mackemagi
- <@Garrison> same concept only more precise
- <@Garrison> my method was pretty archaic lol
- * Washeyy ([email protected]) Quit (Ping timeout: 141 seconds)
- <@zoast> so .. 4n6 did ice beam it looks like. was the X unprecedented or used in TAS??
- <@Garrison> the xfactor part came from 4n6 copying a tas and applying it to realtime play
- <@Garrison> (also japan was doing it completely divorced from our community)
- <@zoast> o i looked at an older vid
- <@zoast> interesting
- <@Garrison> its funny tho
- <@Garrison> because they'd do like our first round
- <@Garrison> then do hotarubi super belly
- <@Garrison> weird stuff
- <@zoast> haha
- <@zoast> no blue then?
- <@Garrison> not at first
- <@Garrison> fusiana and emodoron adopted what we did for the most part
- <@Garrison> then disappeared forever
- <@zoast> im sad i missed when they raced on here
- <@Garrison> honestly the amount of people who have contributed to any% since I've been active is pretty staggering
- <@zoast> barely missed it
- <@zoast> yeah
- <@zoast> it can't be totally detailed
- <@Garrison> dude it was something else playing with them
- <@zoast> but it's nice to know what you are talking about (for me)
- <@zoast> i remember looknig at race times when i first started racing
- <@Garrison> like there were probably 5 of us who we considered playing at a high level and all of a sudden we had like 4 more people at the same level
- <@Garrison> made races reallt exciting
- <@zoast> and kindof looking at their times in awe, you and... either msd or dbx had a sick race where you got good 48s, and the jpn players seemed really consistent players at the time

- <@Garrison> I think it was right around then that kott entered the picture
- <@Garrison> at the first ESA I saw that a name I didn't recognize was playing SM so I watched
- <@Garrison> he got like a 53-55 or something
- <@Garrison> like a month later it felt like he came back and said he cut 50 lol
- <@Garrison> he improved so fast
- <@zoast> hehe
- <jeffsledge> some of the old runs and their comments are on archive.org, if you haven't seen them
- <@Garrison> yeah
- <jeffsledge> like this https://archive.org/details/SuperMetroid_036_HQ
- <@Garrison> groobo, smokey, vorpal all good people to talk to
- <jeffsledge> 2004 murder beam
- <@Garrison> vorpal had TWR back in the day with a :43
- <@Garrison> so he was there for the early days
- <@zoast> who is groobo?
- <jeffsledge> https://archive.org/details/SuperMetroid_055
- <jeffsledge> "As of right now, Twin Galaxies doesn't like the Mockball, and I do quite a few of those, among other things they would probably deem banned. So no record for me there. Oh well, maybe this video will change their minds about the Mockball, as it is basically made into a regular move for me now in the videos."

- <@Garrison> and super metroid apparently
- <@Garrison> he submitted a :34 around the same time hotarubi submitted his time
- <@Garrison> people thought hotarubi video was cheated x)

- <@zoast> http://speedrunslive.com/races/result/#!/24756 this is the one i referring to
- <@Garrison> yeah I remember that race lol
- <@Garrison> they talked about it on TSSB once
- <@zoast> ahh, hhaa yeah i remember hearing that, i thought it was smokey that had prepared a run when hotarubi submitted
- <@zoast> i liked the g u m p e i y o k o i , i imagined it was because you finished right after dbx
- <@Garrison> a few people actually already had :34 and didn't submit at that time
- <@Garrison> not sure if they were going for :33 or not
- <@Garrison> azor is a dude who doesn't really get much credit
- <@Garrison> he invented the x factor kill on phantoon and had a segmented :31
- <@Garrison> like before hotarubi
- <jeffsledge> where did you hear about him?
- <@Garrison> after 4n6 trolled us we did research to find out the true origins of all his strats
- <@Garrison> lol
- <jeffsledge> oh heh
- <@Garrison> kraid was taco and kriole iirc
- <@Garrison> draygon was saturn
- <@zoast> haha
- <@Garrison> as much shit as we give 4n6, his videos were very inspirational for us lol
- <@Garrison> because we all wanted to come up with something better
- <@zoast> yeah, his suggestions were pretty much key things in behemoths 29 that were new
- <@zoast> as far as being used
- <cfb> Samus used 20 hits. Ridley used Tail Whip. Samus fainted.
- <cfb> i like that
- <@Garrison> ye
- <bababababa> 3now live ::6 http://www.twitch.tv/lioran ::6 Pixel art - new request system at tinyurl.com/kv6fdx7
- <jeffsledge> I found a pal tas by saturn
- <jeffsledge> I didn't know he made one
