  4. Somehow it was getting hotter. Even though every day felt like the hottest it could be, it was still getting hotter. The neighborhood streets were filled with people trying to catch every breeze they could, and taking advantage of hoses and sprinklers to cover themselves in water. Kids were screaming, parents sat on street corners enjoying iced tea.
  5.
  6. Avery had a brown box in her arms, and watched Alan come jaunting back toward her. The man, if he could be called that, had an odd way of running. He didn’t seem strained by the action itself, his upper body unphased by the speed he was moving. It didn’t help that he was dressed for fall. It made Avery grin.
  7.
  8. “Do you want me to take up another?” He asked when he got close enough.
  9.
  10. She turned around and looked at the small moving van. She still had a lot to unpack, it was going to take all day with just the two of them.
  11.
  12. Out of the corner of her eyes, she saw Alan’s hands moving close to hers. She stepped back, and gripped the box in her arms tighter.
  13.
  14. “I’ve got this one,” She snapped.
  15.
  16. He looked at her, unblinking.
  17.
  18. “Just grab the odd shaped one, right there on the edge.”
  19.
  20. Alan nodded, and moved to the back of the van. He looked over the many boxes at the entrance, and then looked back at Avery, and then back at the boxes. His eyes locked on her, and he moved his arms, slowly, toward one of the plain boxes of books stacked there.
  21.
  22. “No,” She said, “The strange one, right there Alan.”
  23.
  24. He looked again, and shifted his arms to the next box, and leaned in again.
  25.
  26. “Alan! The one with the rounded side there, can’t you see it?”
  27.
  28. He looked at it and tilted his head, “You said odd.”
  29.
  30. “It isn’t a square,” She said, “I just meant… it isn’t even.”
  31.
  32. He surveyed the other boxes, “Your definitions are useless, but I will carry it.”
  33.
  34. She shook her head, and started toward the front of the apartments. She was sweating out in the sun, she needed a little time under a fan.
  35.
  36. The one benefit of having an indescribable alien tenant, well besides whatever they did in her office, was that she didn’t have to hire movers.
  37.
  38. As she got closer to the door, she noticed a man in a long gray trench coat standing at the entrance.
  39.
  40. She was making an effort to meet as many tenants as she could, but most of them were reclusive. She had files on them, but they were vague, mostly talking about when they paid, with odd notes like ‘don’t call except on Sundays’ or ‘floor always leaks, high water usage’.
  41.
  42. The man opened the door, and Avery started to walk faster.
  43.
  44. “Sir! Excuse me!”
  45.
  46. He froze for a moment, and then rushed inside.
  47.
  48. “Sir!” She shouted, starting to run.
  49.
  50. She got to the door just as it shut, and had to unlock the door to open it again and slip through. When she got inside she could hear footsteps heading up the stairs. She chased after, the box in her hands keeping her off balance. By the time she got to the top of the steps, she moved into the hall, a series of doors on each side with nowhere to hide, and found it empty.
  51.
  52. Avery blinked, and looked up the stairwell, no sign of anyone still running, not even a sound. There was nothing in the hall here though, except his coat. Was he so focused on getting away from her that he dropped his coat? She couldn’t understand it. Not that it was the oddest occurrence in the building though.
  53.
  54. She headed upstairs, her grandfather’s old apartment stuck up on the top floor. She popped the door open, and then propped it with another box. The whole space was cramped, but it would serve her fine. It had a small study, a bedroom, but the kitchen and living room were almost an afterthought. Avery put the box on an odd stack that Alan was creating in the center of the room instead of using the rest of the open space.
  55.
  56. She cut the box open, and inside there were pictures. Many of them were of her family, all together, or just her alone. Others were of her and grandpa Avery, it surprised her how often they were in photos together, usually at this apartment building if they weren’t off at some holiday.
  57.
  58. “I change my mind,” Alan said.
  59.
  60. Avery gasped and tried to close the box like she was guilty. She turned, and Alan was wrestling with the odd box, bringing it to the middle of the room.
  61.
  62. “What?” She asked, letting her heart slow to normal.
  63.
  64. “This one is actually odd,” He said, “I apologize for questioning your definitions, you have experience.”
  65.
  66. Avery smirked, and Alan brought the box closer. He wasn’t struggling with the size of it, just the shape, but the fault was mostly his own. His fingers gripped it at all the wrong points. He walked up to her, and seemed prepared to place the box on top of the stack he was already creating.
  67.
  68. Avery gasped and moved the box of pictures out of the way, and he stacked it.
  69.
  70. He adjusted it until he seemed pleased, gave it a small smile and a nod, and then stood there. He seemed content to just look at her. Considering this heat, the sweat collecting under her arms and on her brow, and his unique diet, she wasn’t surprised. His hand moved to touch her, and Avery didn’t move. He slid his fingers, open palm, up her exposed arm. She could feel the start of that tingling sensation. It rippled over her skin, mixing with a primal warmth starting below her belt.
  71.
  72. Then she heard a jingling of keys in the hallway, and she took a step back.
  73.
  74. “Alan,” She gasped, “maybe you should grab another box?”
  75.
  76. He hesitated, but his hand left her arm. He nodded, stepped away, and then headed toward the hall. His footsteps vanished down the hallway.
  77.
  78. Avery let out a heavy breath, and then went to the kitchen counter to put the box down. The strange sensation his touches created didn’t go away right away, if anything it was spreading. She knew not to touch it, in her head she was starting to imagine it as a mucus. It would spread if she put her fingers to it, better to let it dry out, even if it prickled her skin.
  79.
  80. “He’s a monster you know,” Said a man’s voice.
  81.
  82. Avery’s back went straight, and she looked around. It sounded like it came from in the room, but she was alone. She took a step away from the counter and peered around. Did someone come in while she was distracted? No, it had to be in the hall.
  83.
  84. “Hello?” She asked.
  85.
  86. “Not the cute kind from one of your chick fics, a literal monster squeezed in human skin.”
  87.
  88. Now she knew it was coming from inside the room. Her heartbeat started to rise, and she looked to the counter where her phone was sitting. This was wrong, strange, and that was from the perspective of someone who had lewd dreams about a tentacle man.
  89.
  90. “Who are you? Come out right now. I’ll call the police,” She said, a shiver entering her voice.
  91.
  92. “That’s not nice,” The voice said, followed by a low chuckle, “So it’s okay if you harass me, but not the other way around? Typical woman.”
  93.
  94. She growled, and took a step toward her phone.
  95.
  96. “Whoa there,” He said, “Only kidding, calm down.”
  97.
  98. There was something in his tone. It was less like a terrifying stalker, and more like a panicked office worker. It reminded her of the time a coworker tried to hit on her when she was at a call center at the edge of town, the way he shifted from suave manly man to frightened nerd.
  99.
  100. “Just,” She looked around, unsure of everything around her, “Tell me who you are, where are you?”
  101.
  102. There was no answer. Avery stood there waiting. Just knowing someone could be here kept her heart rate high. Why wasn’t he talking?
  103.
  104. Then Alan appeared at the door, holding a box labeled dishes.
  105.
  106. Avery took in a breath, and then released it. Somehow, having the alien in the room made her feel better.
  107.
  108. “Are you okay?” Alan asked as he took the box to the center of the room. He immediately realized the problem with the odd box on top of the stack, and that his pile wasn’t going to get any larger.
  109.
  110. “Actually no,” She said, looking around. Then she thought about what the voice said, and how little she actually knew about Alan.
  111.
  112. “What is it?” Alan asked, his face contorted into a focus she had never seen before. He looked around the room with intense sweeps of his head. Then he turned back toward her, and walked closer.
  113.
  114. “I’m just sweaty,” She said, and she forced herself to laugh, “I just wish I had more fans. Why don’t you grab a few more boxes for me?”
  115.
  116. “I feel like…” Alan started to speak, but her command sank into his head, and his tanned face relaxed. “Okay, I will be back.”
  117.
  118. He walked out, and Avery watched the door until she was sure he was heading back down the stairs.
  119.
  120. “Lucky he is an idiot,” Said the voice, “We might have both died.”
  121.
  122. She walked toward the direction of the voice, “I asked before, who are you?”
  123.
  124. “Stop there,” He said.
  125.
  126. Despite herself, she did.
  127.
  128. “Name’s Ivan. That enough?”
  129.
  130. “You’re in my apartment, so no it isn’t. Where are you? Why are you in here?”
  131.
  132. She heard him snicker, “I’m right here, you can’t see or something?”
  133.
  134. Avery flared her nostrils.
  135.
  136. “I’ve been watching you, Avery, ever since you came to replace the old man.”
  137.
  138. “That old man was my grandfather,” She tried to keep her voice down, but she was starting to get annoyed.
  139.
  140. She could hear Ivan swallow, and then he was a little quiet, “Yeah I know. He took good care of me.”
  141.
  142. “Took care?” She asked, but she dropped it. That wasn’t important, he was still standing in her apartment, “Are you see-through, Ivan?”
  143.
  144. She felt a touch on her cheek, and leaped backwards.
  145.
  146. Ivan laughed, “See-through? What, no that’s idiotic. I’m invisible.”
  147.
  148. “I fail to see the difference,” She said as she put an arm out and turned in a circle, wildly flailing.
  149.
  150. “That’s a good joke,” Her arm tapped something and Ivan added, “Whoa, watch it there.”
  151.
  152. “Show yourself, this isn’t funny.” Avery rasped.
  153.
  154. She felt a hand stop her spinning by gripping her at the shoulder.
  155.
  156. “It’s simple. Stop flailing like a chicken, look forward, concentrate.”
  157.
  158. Avery grabbed for the hand on her shoulder, and held it tight, then she looked straight in front of her. There was nothing there, just the rest of the room. She was starting to feel insane.
  159.
  160. “Try squinting,” He whispered, “I hear it helps.”
  161.
  162. She did and leaned forward, and then she saw two green irises floating there in the air. It was impossible to contain her gasp of surprise, and her eyes popped wide open.
  163.
  164. “You see?” Ivan said, “Not see-through, adaptive camouflage.”
  165.
  166. Adaptive camouflage, as if she was just supposed to accept that. But she could see what he meant. What she was looking at right in front of her wasn’t perfect, the wall across from her, behind him, had details missing. It was small stuff, chips in the paint of the door, stains on the carpet, they didn’t get translated perfectly. Still, she could see his eyes move down her body, the the transition was so smooth it was hard to see unless she squinted.
  167.
  168. “You aren’t very tall,” She found herself saying. His eyes were straight ahead, maybe even a little lower than hers.
  169.
  170. He sputtered, “Well, hey. You’re actually sort of tall, aren’t you? I mean, to me, at least.”
  171.
  172. She felt him pull his hand from under hers, and could see him take a step back. She couldn’t help but smile.
  173.
  174. “I didn’t mean it as an insult,” She said, “This is amazing, how do you do that?”
  175.
  176. “Oh yeah, not an insult. Well then congrats on your fat ass.”
  177.
  178. Avery gasped, and then whacked at the air in front of her, striking him in the arm.
  179.
  180. “Sorry, didn’t mean that,” He said as she slapped him again, “I like fat asses.”
  181.
  182. “Maybe you should just get out,” She said.
  183.
  184. “I’m sorry, I’m not good at this,” Ivan said, “No more hitting. You made me defensive.”
  185.
  186. She stopped, but she made sure he could tell from her stance that she was ready to continue at any time. Not that she was all that intimidating, but she could try.
  187.
  188. “I’ve always been this way,” He said, “I mean, all of my folks were too. It ain’t a trick, it is who I am.”
  189.
  190. That made her pause. Always invisible, what kind of life was that? Well, maybe he could change it a little, his iris was visible after all, did he force that or was it always that way? How many strange people were in this building?
  191.
  192. She snapped out of her thoughts, “So how long did you know grandpa?” She asked.
  193.
  194. When she looked for his eyes, she couldn’t find them. Did he move? Considering what she knew of him so far, he was likely playing with her.
  195.
  196. “These boxes were adequate,” Alan said as he entered the room again. He had a box under each arm, and took them to the center of the room.
  197.
  198. “Oh, hey Alan,” She said, then realized immediately how strange that sounded.
  199.
  200. He nodded at her, that sheen on his skin making her flash back to sordid memories. It didn’t take much, especially with a man as large and toned as him.
  201.
  202. Then she felt a hand squeeze her from behind, pinching at the skin on her lower back. She yelped, but covered her mouth.
  203.
  204. “Hello, Avery,” Alan echoed, “I believe at this rate, we can finish before nightfall.”
  205.
  206. He put the boxes down on his new tower, and then turned toward her, a slight smirk on his face.
  207.
  208. The hand, Ivan’s hand, moved down and squeezed her behind. She squeezed her toes, but tried not to gasp again. His fingers doughed into her flesh, and sent a strike through her body. It was hard not to swat him away.
  209.
  210. “That’s great,” Avery said, “Then the truck company won’t break my legs.”
  211.
  212. She tried to casually put a hand behind her back, and grab hold of his wrist.
  213.
  214. Ivan’s hand continued to explore, touching the top of the back of her thigh, sliding along the back of her shorts. The contact was strange, but it was also exciting. Alan was right there, and she could see a bit of confusion in his eyes. He couldn’t see Ivan’s hand make an imprint in her shorts, or see his finger dip past the band at her crack.
  215.
  216. “I wouldn’t borrow trucks from dangerous men,” Alan said, “There have to be safer companies.”
  217.
  218. Avery wanted to laugh, smile even, but it was hard to concentrate with Ivan drawing letters on the small of her back. B.U.T.T. He wasn’t exactly creative.
  219.
  220. “I was just joking,” She said, “Alan, can you go get one of the big boxes for me?”
  221.
  222. He tilted his head, and took a step closer to her.
  223.
  224. Avery took a step back, and then another, feeling Ivan being pushed behind her. She was close to a wall, she knew she couldn’t run him into that.
  225.
  226. Alan stood above her, eyes scanning her face. She couldn’t help but blush, could he tell something was strange?
  227.
  228. Avery felt something try to squeeze between her thighs. It was warm, stiff, unmistakeable. She didn’t know why it had only reached her now, Ivan was nude!
  229.
  230. “Of course,” Alan said, “It may take a moment, the stairwell is narrow.”
  231.
  232. Alan stepped away, and when he reached the hall Avery felt a shiver go up her body.
  233.
  234. “I should have told Alan to rip you apart,” She whispered.
  235.
  236. “But you didn’t,” Ivan said, “Sounds like I have a shot.”
  237.
  238. She slipped off of his protruding member and turned around, realizing how futile it was to face an invisible man. All she could see was the wall.
  239.
  240. “Are you naked?” She hissed, “I can’t believe you’re in my room naked!”
  241.
  242. Avery spotted Ivan’s eyes, turned down, “I usually am naked.”
  243.
  244. “Even still,” She snapped, “You don’t just touch someone like that, what are you stupid?”
  245.
  246. “You’re just mad because you were enjoying it in front of your pet monster,” Ivan said, “I slipped you the willy, and now you want more.”
  247.
  248. “Less and less by the word,” Avery said, pointing at his face, “You really do talk too much you know that? Maybe that’s why you’re invisible, so no one can find you and slap you in the mouth.”
  249.
  250. Ivan’s eyes vanished, and he huffed. A footfall could be heard right next to her, but for a moment he stayed silent.
  251.
  252. “Fine, I’ll go,” He said, “Sorry I bothered you.”
  253.
  254. Avery took a deep breath. It was hard to ignore that odd feeling between her legs, crawling up her back, but he also made her so angry. It was like dealing with a child.
  255.
  256. “Wait,” He said from right behind her.
  257.
  258. Avery turned in place, putting her back close to the wall.
  259.
  260. “Less and less? That means you did want more, right?” Ivan said, “And I did screw it up?”
  261.
  262. That wasn’t what she was expecting. Avery opened her mouth to talk, but she could make out his eyes, and they were real close now. That sensation, when you know someone is close despite not making contact, it was happening all over.
  263.
  264. “Then you ruined it,” Was all she could say, “So, back up.”
  265.
  266. “What if I was real quiet,” Ivan said, “I’m good at that, you never noticed me in your office.”
  267.
  268. Avery took a step back, and tried to ignore that, “You can’t just hit rewind, Ivan.”
  269.
  270. “I’m sorry, okay? I act like an idiot sometimes. Avery always helped me with that. He said I was an ass because I knew I could always get away.”
  271.
  272. Grandpa was helping Ivan? She couldn’t imagine it, but maybe it made sense. Grandpa was always full of great advice, and he was always willing to be hands on, like when he sat with her at the park while she sold lemonade because she was too nervous to do it alone.
  273.
  274. “Here,” Ivan said, grabbing her hand, “Don’t focus on my words, focus on this.”
  275.
  276. He slid her hand to just in front of him, and she ran into that heat, a rod. She gripped it by instinct.
  277.
  278. “Ivan,” She said, ready to chastise him for being forward, and then she ran her fingers over it, “I mean, you can’t just…”
  279.
  280. Maybe it was an illusion, since she could only feel it with her hands, but it felt wide, and so warm. Her fingers felt like they were being tickled as they ran over every vein along the curve. Her thighs squeezed together.
  281.
  282. “You’re an idiot, you know that?” She said, “I don’t know what grandpa taught you, but you can’t just hand a girl your penis. Are you mental?”
  283.
  284. Ivan didn’t respond. She pushed his member down, and furrowed her brow, but still he didn’t make a noise.
  285.
  286. “Are you giving me the silent treatment now?” She said, “I’m the angry one.”
  287.
  288. She gripped him, and ran her thumb up the bottom of the shaft. It was so odd, to have it there in her hands, but still there was nothing in front of her. Her tongue ran over her lips. Her mind was off track, she knew that much, but she couldn’t help it. But as long as he was silent, that warmth between her thighs was returning. She swayed her hips, her fingers felt alive, and her face was flushed red.
  289.
  290. “Shit,” Avery whispered.
  291.
  292. She stroked down his length, then back up. The motion didn’t make him speak, she wasn’t even sure if he was moving, but she had to trust that he would say something if she did anything wrong. Up the shaft, then back down again, her thumb tapped his head, ran over the smooth tip, then she went again. Her waist started to move in motion with her hands. The heat coming off of him seemed to reach her groin. With each stroke she could feel him grow harder in her grip. She put a hand against the wall, braced herself, and started to move faster.
  293.
  294. She realized she was holding her breath, and let out a labored breath. Her wrist was getting tired, but stopping would have been worse. Her thighs were shifting non-stop now, side to side with tug. Her second hand joined in, gripping his balls softly as she picked up speed.
  295.
  296. Then he kissed her. Her back went to the wall, and his tongue passed between her lips. She moaned into him, accepted the short and violent intrusion. For one moment, she could see his eyes again, maybe even more.
  297.
  298. Then Avery heard approaching footsteps. Her eyes popped open, but Ivan put a hand on her shoulder and forced her down to her knees.
  299.
  300. “Trust.” He whispered.
  301.
  302. She went to her knees, and Alan entered the room.
  303.
  304. He had a box so large he had to turn sideways to force it into the room. It was picture frames, she knew that much. She found a long box to carry all of them.
  305.
  306. Alan stopped right away, “Avery?” He looked around the room.
  307.
  308. It was unreal, Avery could look right through Ivan, but why couldn’t Alan see her? He turned in a circle, and then put the box down.
  309.
  310. “Avery? Are you here?”
  311.
  312. She was right here, her hand still touching Ivan’s swollen manhood, and Alan couldn’t see a thing. It felt, naughty, exhibitionist style. If he found her, what would he think? Would he even understand?
  313.
  314. Then Ivan pushed his waist forward, his tip tapping her on the lips. She was going to complain, and then remembered her current state. She couldn’t be seen, but she could be heard. Ivan pressed forward again, and Avery’s lower body clenched up.
  315.
  316. There was a good chance she was going to regret all of this.
  317.
  318. She opened her mouth, and guided him in. It was so warm, it felt like it flowed through her whole body. His girth wasn’t just her imagination, it was larger than Alan’s tentacle, not that she would ever tell him that. He slid in so deep that she had to fight off reflex, and then he slowly retreated. The taste on her tongue was so unique, the touch as she slid over every detail, it made it hard to stay silent.
  319.
  320. “You will return soon,” Alan said, “I can only hope you would want another box… do you want that?”
  321.
  322. Alan waited in silence. She wanted him to leave, she wanted to finish what she had started.
  323.
  324. Ivan kept his thrusts slow, but that didn’t stop the pleasure from building up. It didn’t matter if he was moving like a jackhammer or an oil test, he was still fucking her mouth. Right there, in her room, right in front of Alan, it was unbelievable.
  325.
  326. She could feel Ivan growing warmer, his length seeming to grow even larger, was he going to finish? Now? She wouldn’t be able to stop herself from gagging if he did, they would be found out.
  327.
  328. Avery squeezed him at the base, hoping for some universal sign that he should wait.
  329.
  330. Ivan paused for a moment, but as she should have expected, he only moved faster. It was moving her now, pushing her back and tugging her forward, she couldn’t help but let out a short moan through her nose.
  331.
  332. Alan stopped in place, and looked right at them. He took a step forward, his hand out, his eyes focused.
  333.
  334. Could he sense her sweat? Because she was sweating so much now. Could he tell she was right there? Ivan was plunging in and out of her, her body was on fire, her muscles were squeezing tight as a storm of pleasure built up inside her.
  335.
  336. “This world has oddities,” Alan said, stopping short of Ivan’s back, and turning around. He walked out of the room, and vanished down the hall.
  337.
  338. She couldn’t muffle herself any longer, a long moan escaped around him. His fingers spread through her hair, pulled her forward as he thrusted deeper. She could tell he was reaching his limit, and she was too. Her hands reached behind his thighs, pulled him in with each thrust.
  339.
  340. Then he pulled her in, and she felt his thighs flex. Her body reacted before she felt the first burst down her throat. Her legs went hard, she had trouble still kneeling, her hands gripped him tighter than she wanted. As jet after jet came out, she swallowed greedily, her tongue running back and forth over his length like a puppy’s excited tail. Pleasure rippled up and down her body, her mind zeroing in on that moment.
  341.
  342. He was panting, then fell to flat feet.
  343.
  344. Avery grabbed him at the base again, and sucked him clean before letting him go. When she finished, she stood up.
  345.
  346. There, right before her, she could see an outline. Was it all the sweating? She could see the contours of his face, but only slightly.
  347.
  348. She reached back and slapped him across the mouth.
  349.
  350. “Ow! What was that for!” He gasped.
  351.
  352. “What if he saw us?” She snapped, “You really are a piece of work.”
  353.
  354. “Look,” Ivan said, “No one ever sees me, are you not getting that yet?”
  355.
  356. She put her hands up to strangle him, but just growled instead, “We are going to have to talk, we’re going to have a lot of talks. You need help, Ivan.”
  357.
  358. “Yeah, and who is going to help me? You?” He said with a snort, “Because I liked that sort of help.”
  359.
  360. “Actually, yeah me,” She said, “We’re going to start off where grandpa left. Rule number one, no entering people’s apartments without permission.”
  361.
  362. She started toward the door, she had to find Alan and make sure he didn’t go try to call missing persons or something.
  363.
  364. “Even if no one notices?” Ivan asked, following behind her.
  365.
  366. “Especially if no one notices!” She replied.
  367.
  368. “Oh yeah, and how are you going to enforce that?” He asked with a laugh.
  369.
  370. She stopped, and looked back at the empty room, “We’re going to get you a schedule, and a curfew. If you aren’t where you’re supposed to be, that’s a strike. You know what happens at three strikes right?”
  371.
  372. Avery didn’t need to see his eyes to know they were bulging out of his head.
  373.
  374. “You wouldn’t! I’ve been here since we were kids. This is my home.”
  375.
  376. She turned around and kept going toward the door, “Well then you better get your act together mister. To start with, go sit around nude in your own apartment.”
  377.
  378. As she headed back downstairs, his words echoed in her head. It brought up something her mom used to say.
  379.
  380. “You were always so sad when you left grandpa’s place. You even had a little imaginary friend over there… what was his name again?”
  381.
  382. Avery stopped on the stairs, and looked back up at all the nothing.
  383.
  384. She smirked, and shook her head, “Naw, no way.”
