- ANY% (First run estimate: 1h00 - 1h20)
- Quite a nice starter category to go with. It gets you used to the games core mechanics and goes through a fair amount of basic glitches which you'll need for other categories. 5-kong (Unlocks all 5 kongs) is by far the most recommended for new runners! 3-kong and 1-kong are most certainly not for new runners. Although the latter 2 are faster (1-kong being the fastest), they involve several tricks which are not beginner friendly. 5-kong only involves going to Japes, Aztec, Factory, Caves (for all of a few seconds) and Helm.
- NO LEVELS EARLY (First run estimate: 3h10-3h30 [VC], 3h20-4h [N64])
- Also quite a nice starter category. Maybe not as friendly as Any%, but still gets the player used to the games core mechanics and even more glitches than Any%. It uses a 4.5m glitch at the start which prevents saving (Which can be scary) and the pause menu, but also prevents taking damage under most circumstances. This means that if you cannot escape from an area, it's an automatic reset.
- You go to all the levels in No Levels Early. You cannot perform any B-Locker Skips or enter any Lobbies without the appropriate key(s).
- 101% (First Run Estimate: 7h50-9h [VC], 8h40-10h [N64])
- Out of the 3 main starter categories, this is the least beginner friendly. Not because of it's difficulty (which is around the same as No Levels Early in my opinion), but the endurance aspect of it. For your first run, when you start the timer, you are essentially strapping yourself in for playing for over 8 hours without breaks in the middle. This category involves getting everything in the game which changes the percentage (Golden Bananas, Medals, Keys, Fairies, Crowns and the 2 Special Coins).
