Rebellion shilling 101

Rebellion, as a movie, for me, challenges the very nature of an anime ending to begin with. Yes, Madoka's ending is somewhat conclusive and satisfying, and for all intents and purposes, sufficient. But if you're a seasoned anime viewer, or really a seasoned consumer of any piece of entertainment media, there is one piece of your mind that thinks outside the medium in the realm of (but what if). That's what Rebellion is. It addresses the unnecessary but reasonable completion to Homura's character arc that wasn't needed to wrap the excellent story that Madoka is, but was necessary for it to be a full and complete character arc. I respect Urobutcher beyond belief for having the guts to pull off something like that and it's something that I, as an aspiring writer, dream to be able to do one day. The ability to control your work in such a way so as to choose a path any normal traveler of anime wouldn't choose, whether in fear of antagonizing the fanbase or ruining an already conclusive ending. But Butcher asked himself the "what if" question and answered it via Rebellion.

Yes, Madoka's sacrifice and Homura's acceptance of it in the end of the series are great conclusions to make to the series thematically, but _what if_ Homura didn't actually accept it. What if Homura harbored feelings of guilt. A grudge. _What if_. That's what Rebellion is to me, and I admire it a lot for answering the eternal question that follows the ending of a show. _What if_.
