  1. There were only two big lights in No Man's Land. First and always, the spotlight near the bar, for the few like Taryn who braved it. Second, the door let in a ray of deadly sun whenever it was held open. When Taryn found herself subject to both, she lazily turned to see.
  2. The newcomer leaned on a five-bladed walking stick, even though she was standing on four hooves. She wore a bright white poncho and caparison, over armor of thick-layered black cloth. Under one arm she held her helmet, with a prominent(but hardly intimidating) mouth guard and a clear visor. On her lower back, her caparison humped up, presumably over a set of saddlebags and a pack. The bulk of her armor hid her build, but she didn't move anything like a warrior. A centaur, with some kind of polearm, but not the stereotypical alcoholic lance-happy centaur.
  3. Her exposed head didn't suggest fighting skills, either. Long black hair, soft brown skin, and water-based makeup indicated a pampered life. However, her long ears bore multiple holes, but no jewelry; that indicated she knew what she was getting into.
  4. She wilted under the scrutiny of every tough in No Man's Land, and let the door close, making her way to the bar. She had no trouble moving, and any weariness was mental. The usual game of No Spare Stools didn't apply, since she simply stood at the bar, leaning on her walking stick, in the space where Talongash's stool had been ripped out last month. And she was smart enough to not play Bartenders Have No Time For You, just setting a stack of silver coins on the bar and waiting. Cross-Eyed Jack started to move in for a round of Not As Tough As The Floor, but Argelle laid a hand on his shoulder and silently shook her head.
  5. That last gave Taryn pause. Argelle got frequent glimpses of the future with her fifth eye, what had she seen?
  6. Thus, Flerio was the first to interact with the newcomer. He was lone bartender for the heat of the day; Old Marion would take over at sundown, and Jerry would join her when the place picked up for dinner. Flerio gave a mild purr as he reached for the coins, but was mostly gentle about it. "What can I do for you?"
  7. "A pint of your weakest, I'm truly parched, and some information. How do I hire Corruption Hunters?"
  8. He froze.
  9. So did most of the patrons.
  10. Taryn and seven others stood, but Taryn was the first to speak. "We aren't for hire, Newcomer. You report Corruption, and we deal with it."
  11. The newcomer turned to face Taryn in full. Her armor must protect specifically against attacks from the front, and for a centaur that makes sense. "What about more long-term plans? Several centuries ago, a ship crashed in what is now the Scorching Waste, bearing a prototype anti-Corruption weapon. I intend to recover that weapon, and develop it for use against the Corruption."
  12. Was the Waste once an ocean? Several centuries is a long time. "Then let's talk." She brought her drink over, and people unfroze and sat. She made a move to swipe Jack off his stool, and he got out of the way. As she heaved her bulk onto the stool, Flerio brought the newcomer a quart-mug of grog so thin it was barely clean. The coins had already disappeared. "Not a great introduction, by the way."
  13. "Then allow me to correct that." The newcomer bowed her upper body low, eyes down. "Sharlanoriel Passai Mithalunei."
  14. Taryn would've preferred a handshake, but returned some of the bow, without lowering her eyes for a moment. "Taryn."
  15. "…My apologies, have I presumed too much to exchange full names?"
  16. "Nah, we just did. May I call you "Shar"?"
  17. Shar nodded numbly.
  18. "So Shar, why'd you want to hire Corruption Hunters for this little trip?"
  19.
  20.
  21.
  22. "Tell me this:" Shar said, in a tone more like a teacher and less like a student, "What keeps the Corruption from spreading across the Scorching Waste?" Her expression was neither teacher nor student, except perhaps a bored student with no intention of learning.
  23. "Three things." Taryn grinned a little, as that was sufficient to wash half the boredom from Shar's face. "First, the terrain. There's nothing to support the kind of growth Corruption wants, and even the plants here are very good at feeding on whatever growth they can find. Second, Corruption Hunters. Anywhere it makes a good inroad, we cut it out. And finally, the toxic mana from the Dark Temple seems to poison Corruption better than it does anything else."
  24. Shar was listening intently, eyes narrowed, by the time Taryn had finished the last item. "And this Dark Temple… what is it?"
  25. "Unless you're a troll, it's death. It stands at the center of the Waste, and aside from the trolls who live there, few have seen it." Taryn let pride creep into her voice, rather than spell it out. "It's built all cattywampus, angles and flat faces of shining metal jutting out from the rock, with dark clouds coming out at all hours. It probably made the Waste, with how it poisons everything for horizons around."
  26. Shar nodded. "A fair description of our goal, then."
  27. "…Riiight. Pull the other one."
