  40. It's a late night show starring Dave,
  41. Dave Letterman, Indianapolis' own,
  42. Silly skits, music and guests,
  43. Is Bud Melman for real, hey man I don't know
  44. It's news and it's sports, It's weather reports,
  45. Tryin so hard to please you,
  46. It's good for the farmers, milkmen and snake charmers,
  47. There's even a chuckle or two,
  48. It's The Dave Letterman show,
  49. TV's crazy funny man,
  50. Where is that Marvin Albert with his bloopers,
  51. Your gonna love, love that Dave, love is Dave, Here comes Dave!
  52.
  53.
  54. The David Letterman Theme Song (as sung by Paul Shaffer)
  55. --------------------------------------------------------
  56.
  57. Gerson Koenig explains:
  58. There was a viewer mail letter once from a guy who had a public access
  59. show and had his own lyrics for the song, which he used on said show.
  60. I can't remember any of his lyrics, but Paul came back with his own
  61. set of lyrics that went something like this:
  62.
  63. Down in Melbourne, F-L-A,
  64. Some guy named Bill(?) is ripping me off.
  65. And don't you know now, my lawyers say legally
  66. That Bill's house and car belong to me.
  67.
  68.
  69. Late Night World of Love
  70. ------------------------
  71.
  72. There's a cool breeze blowin'.
  73. You can feel it 'cross the land.
  74. It's surfin' fun,
  75. A dad and son,
  76. A place where you can stand.
  77.
  78. And Late Night is the reason
  79. Our forefathers fought with pride.
  80. It's clear blue skies,
  81. Grandma's eyes,
  82. A feeling that's deep inside.
  83.
  84. [chorus]
  85. It's a Late Night world.
  86. It's a world that we can share.
  87. So turn on your TV
  88. And watch it with me.
  89. It's a Late Night world of love.
  90.
  91. There's a whole new generation
  92. Who are willing to say "yes."
  93. It's soups and stews,
  94. A wall of shoes,
  95. A thing called "happiness."
  96.
  97. So change the channel, change your life.
  98. It doesn't cost a thing.
  99. We're talking loud,
  100. We're standing proud,
  101. Now join us as we sing.
  102.
  103. [repeat chorus]
  104.
  105.
  106. The Viewer Mail Theme
  107. ---------------------
  108.
  109. Viewer Mail, Viewer Mail,
  110. Friday is the day we read viewer mail.
  111. First we read them, Then we answer them,
  112. That's the little thing we call Viewer Mail
  113.
  114.

  235. The Turban Is Not For Sale
  236. --------------------------
  237.
  238. "The Turban is not for sale" refers to a sketch on Late Show with David
  239. Letterman about a month ago. Our TV Pal was doing a quiz in which one of
  240. the answers was "the turban is not for sale." It wasn't particularly funny
  241. in and of itself, but Dave remarked (as I recall) that that phrase sounds
  242. like it might have come from a song somewhere. Paul chipped in, and over
  243. the next few seconds they put together the following, sung to the tune of
  244. "Farmer in the Dell":
  245.
  246. The turban is not for sale
  247. The turban is not for sale
  248. How many times have I told you guys
  249. The turban is not for sale!
  250.
  251. ...and they were so excited by this that they did it numerous times
  252. throughout the show.
  253.
  254. (Thanks Will Irace and Brian Peek)

  259. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
  260. (Spoken)
  261.
  262. A year ago, you asked me to write a song for a special friend, who
  263. ran onto your show, and stole the hearts of people everywhere. His
  264. name...Pea-Boy, and this is his song.
  265.
  266. Gimme an A!
  267. Gimme a B!
  268. Gimme a... <whistle>
  269.
  270. (Sung)
  271.
  272. Pea-Boy, can't you see, boy,
  273. All the great news that you spread,
  274. Everyone waits, so don't hesitate,
  275. We love it when you aim right at our head!
  276.
  277. Some think you look funny,
  278. But sonny, that's simply not true!
  279. So if someone's gotta grow up, and be a pea,
  280.
  281. I don't care as long as it's,
  282. I don't care as long as it's,
  283. I'm glad that it's <oh> that it's you!
  284.
  285. (Thanks John Neuharth)

  322. You should've seen just what I saw
  323. He was rich but dressed so raggedy
  324.
  325. The cat is dead, the point is moot
  326. But if he had been wearin' that zoot suit
  327. He would surely be alive today
  328.
  329. Now I don't want to sound too rude
  330. But I do not want to be snail food

  346.
  347. Wakin' up a little extra early
  348. Laying out my wardrobe in the sun
  349. Ironing out life's little lines and creases

  375. of the David Letterman Show?
  376. It's got me all in a whirl...
  377.
  378. It's a thing called news,
  379. but not just any kind,
  380. It's Small Town News.
  381.
  382.
  383. Dumb Ads
  384. ________
  385.
  386. Dumb Ads,
  387. These are Dumb Ads,
  388. Those koo-koo ads,
  389. Those nutty ads...
  390.
  391. (Thanks Mike Southworth)
  392.
  393. Kitties (To the tune of "Memories")
  394. -----------------------------------
  395. Midnight, and the kitties are sleeping
  396. dowstairs by the furnace
  397. while birdies are cheeping.
  398.
  399. (thanks Bob Kupiec)
  400.
  401. Pasty White Thighs
  402. ------------------
  403.
  404. (Dave told a joke in the monologue one night about what Americans who
  405. were surveyed would like to see the President do. The punchline was
  406. that 37% of them would like to see him "do something about those pasty
  407. white thighs of his." That led to this lounge lizard special spun by
  408. Dave and Paul.)
  409.
  410. Pasty white thighs
  411. You've got those pasty white thighs
  412. We love them so
  413. You've got those pasty white thighs
  414. Do something about those pasty white thighs
  415. And leave that deficit alone!
  416.
  417. (Next came a "New Books" segment for which Paul made up this theme:)
  418.
  419. New Books
  420. ---------
  421.
  422. [to the theme from "Bewitched"]
  423.
  424. New books
  425. New books
  426. Dave reads one every day
  427. New books
  428. New books
  429. That's all we've got to say
  430. They may be intel-lec-tu-al
  431. Or maybe good for a laugh
  432. But one thing's for sure --
  433. Pasty white thighs !!
  434.
  435. (Later that night the Top 10 list was about the Clintons, lord knows
  436. the subject, I've forgotten, but Number 1 was changed to, "His pasty
  437. white thighs." Kind of nutty.)
  438.
  439. Dave's Neighborhood (by Marvin Hamlisch)
  440. ----------------------------------------
  441.
  442. There is a special place in this universe
  443. Not far from all the tinsel and the glitter.
  444. That's spitting distance from Times Square
  445. If you're a real good spitter!
  446.
  447. Where can you buy a pizza pie delivered by Rockettes?
  448. Or meet a bouncer from a topless bar you won't forget?
  449. And where does Alex sell her bagels, lox and cream cheese spread?
  450. Where can you get a Xerox copy of Fern Chapnick's head?
  451.
  452. (Chorus)
  453. Where?
  454. Dave's neighborhood! <wow!>
  455. Dave's neighborhood! <gosh!>
  456. Everyone's a Broadway star in Dave's neighborhood!
  457.
  458. If you need a great tuxedo, Bart Dadon's the guy to see.
  459. For a great cup of coffee you can turn to Rupert Jee.
  460. Mr. Elo sells TVs and VCRs and he's no fool.
  461. And no one wears a suit like Mujibur and Sirajul!
  462.
  463. (repeat the chorus)
  464.
  465. By now you get the picture
  466. But in case you don't catch on
  467. We saved it for posterity upon the Jumbotron
  468.
  469. Where?
  470. Dave's neighborhood! <wow!>
  471. Dave's neighborhood! <gosh!>
  472. Doesn't matter who you are...
  473. You can be a superstar...
  474. Everyone's a Broadway star in Dave's Neighborhood!
  475.

  482. And one more for that road,
  483. That long long long, cuckoo nutty long
  484. Ro-o-o-oad.
  485.
  486. (Thanks Steph at menudo.uh.edu)
  487.

  493.
  494. Supermarket finds,
  495. exchanging glances,
  496. SUPER-market fi-inds!...
  497.
  498. (thanks Tom Celentano)
  499.
  500.
  501. Hypmotized and Naked
  502. --------------------
  503.
  504. (Yet another riff on an unexpected new phrase coined by Dave.)
  505.
  506. I'm hypnotized and naked,
  507. Down at the grocery store.
  508. I used to have some clothes on,
  509. But they ain't on no more.
  510.
  511. I'm hypnotized and naked,
  512. And you know, it's a lot of fun.
  513. I'm hypnotized and naked,
  514. And now my song is done.
  515.
  516. (Thanks Mike Southworth)
  517.
  518. You Kill Me
  519. -----------
  520.
  521. (From the 2nd Annual Holiday Film Festival, title track to a short
  522. directed by Merrill Markoe, performed by Paul and the boys.)
  523.
  524. There I was in my everyday routine
  525. Agonizing
  526. Rationalizing
  527. There you were, looking fine as you can be
  528. Mesmerizing
  529. Nautilizing
  530. Fate interceded out of the blue
  531. You looked at me
  532. I looked back at you, back at you
  533.
  534. -chorus-
  535. Yeah! You kill me
  536. Got to do the things that thrill me
  537. I don't know why you do it
  538. How you put me through it
  539. Stop - you kill me.
  540.
  541. There we were, livin' happily
  542. I was into you
  543. You were into me
  544. Every day was sweeter than before
  545. I wanna be loved
  546. You give me more
  547. Love can be funny, sometimes you just can't see
  548. What's right for you
  549. Is just too much for me, too much for me
  550.
  551. (repeat chorus)
  552.
  553. They say that everything must change
  554. But this is such a shame
  555. Why did we let it get so-
  556. "Babe you best be chillin'
  557. Else why'd you be killin'"
  558.
  559. (instrumental break)
  560.
  561. Life goes on, no matter what you say
  562. Or what you do
  563. You know it's true
  564. After all, it's still just you and me
  565. Been around the world
  566. Nothin' left to see
  567. The verdict's in, defendant tried
  568. I find you guilty
  569. Convict you of love homicide
