  1. At day one of Madison Regionals, I was wearing my usual Charizard shirt that I've worn to events since 2014. I have been on the official stream twice with that shirt, at 2015 US Nationals and 2016 St. Louis Regionals, so I thought nothing of it. When asked to go on stream, in the middle of turn one, I was asked by the judge to leave the game to put on a Play! Pokemon shirt after I had locked in my moves for turn two. Apparently my Charizard shirt wasn't officially licensed material, which is why I was asked to change. Fortunately for me, I used Volt Switch when my opponent lacked Ground-types, so I had ample time to "Volt Switch my shirt" and come back to analyze the game state properly. Afterwards, I was allowed to keep the Play! Pokemon shirt.

  3. Because I knew I was using Volt Switch, I didn't have any negative experience from this exchange (free shirt!), but missing an entire game turn can be pivotal in Pokemon. For example, even if the judge / my opponent relays what attacks, items, Abilities, etc. happened in that turn, I could miss important damage to determine how a Pokemon is trained, and other elements may be glossed over, such as hail turn-end chip to reveal Speed order for my team in particular. I also don't understand what the criteria is for the stream shirt ban; something like Drew Nowak's "we out this B17TCH" graduation shirt is understandable, but my DBZ shirt from US Nats last year was apparently ok, etc. I have no issues complying, but I hope that at future events the Play! Pokemon shirts are given out prior to the match start, or that the shirt switch is asked for in between games out of respect for the players.
