51. A sniper on a mercenary assassination team, kills the minister of mines of the Congo. Terrier's successful kill shot forces him into hiding. Returning to the Congo years later, he becomes the target of a hit squad himself.
 52. A sniper on a mercenary assassination team, working for an unknown client, kills the minister of mines of the Congo. Terrier's (Sean Penn's) successful kill shot forces him to go into hiding to protect himself and the members of the team from retribution. This includes abruptly abandoning his girlfriend who has no idea what is going on. The assassination, paid for by a foreign mining company, triggers wide spread chaos and death in an already inflamed Congo. Terrier returns to the Congo years later working for an NGO, but eventually finds himself to be the target of a paid hit squad somehow connected to the ministers assassination. This leads to immediate deaths and the endangerment of the people working around him, and forces him back into hiding. In trying to discover who has put a price on his head, he begins to reconnect to the members of his old assassination team, including his old girlfriend. Always aware there is no path to redemption for his crimes, he is also periodically incapacitated by a type of accumulated and evolving physical brain damage caused by the hard knocks of his occupation. Unexpectedly, given the time that has elapsed, his reconnection to his old assassination team exposes additional intrigues with immediate deadly consequences. All of his years spent in hiding, have merely delayed the twisted end game that now enfolds.
 53. Given the propensity of Hollywood liberals to try and "act", that is exactly what this film tries to let happen and fails at miserably. We all know SPs political beliefs, so it is completely impossible for any kind of attempted role that he poorly tries to portray in this movie. It's like the crazy Janeane Garafolo trying to miserably portray a cop "who cares" - it's just not believable. SP is not believable. He's an anti-gun liberal who just can't even try to act like a normal person, let alone the character in the film. I wouldn't even waste $5 on buying this in the Wal-Mart DVD bin, let alone wasting money renting it from Red Box.
 54. The Gunman is the epitome of wasting talent. It has Sean Penn in a Liam Neeson-type veteran badass role with Javier Bardem and Idris Elba as supporting characters, which sounds great. The problem is the script is an absolute disaster, and the movie gets worse and worse as it goes on. It's just so boring. The story is Sean Penn's character and some other guys get together for a contract killing or something like that, then years later people from the job start getting killed off and Penn has to figure out what's going on.

First of all, there's only a handful of shootouts in this movie. You'd think there'd be more of a focus on guns because of the title, but it really is just another generic action movie with a stupid love triangle and horrible dialogue. And even when there is an action sequence it's just like, whatever, nothing I haven't seen before. Why in the world Idris Elba is in this movie is beyond me. He doesn't show up for over an hour into the thing and has maybe five minutes of total screen time. Javier Bardem is completely wasted coming off of a magnetic performance in Skyfall. And Sean Penn is really ripped. That's probably the biggest takeaway you'll get from this movie.

The Gunman is complete garbage and no one should ever be subjected to watching this. It gets a 3 for potential and even that's being generous.
 55. Penn’s vanity — both in the way he shows off his bod and in the way he drives home the nobility of the once-wayward Terrier — is either the most deeply annoying thing about The Gunman, or the one thing in it that actually works. I’m leaning toward the latter.
