  64.
  65.
  66. Job X
  67.
  68.
  69. Psalm O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;
  70. and by night, but find no rest.
  71. 22 I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters;[e]
  72. in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
  73. Proverbs 2v22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,
  74. and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.
  75. 22 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
  76. and favour is better than silver or gold.
  77. 2 The rich and the poor have this in common:
  78. the Lord is the maker of them all.
  79. 3 The clever see danger and hide;
  80. but the simple go on, and suffer for it.
  81. 4 The reward for humility and fear of the Lord
  82. is riches and honour and life.
  83. 5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse;
  84. the cautious will keep far from them.
  85. 6 Train children in the right way,
  86. and when old, they will not stray.
  87. 7 The rich rules over the poor,
  88. and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
  89. 8 Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity,
  90. and the rod of anger will fail.
  91. 9 Those who are generous are blessed,
  92. for they share their bread with the poor.
  93. 10 Drive out a scoffer, and strife goes out;
  94. quarrelling and abuse will cease.
  95. 11 Those who love a pure heart and are gracious in speech
  96. will have the king as a friend.
  97. 12 The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge,
  98. but he overthrows the words of the faithless.
  99. 13 The lazy person says, ‘There is a lion outside!
  100. I shall be killed in the streets!’
  101. 14 The mouth of a loose[a] woman is a deep pit;
  102. he with whom the Lord is angry falls into it.
  103. 15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a boy,
  104. but the rod of discipline drives it far away.
  105. 16 Oppressing the poor in order to enrich oneself,
  106. and giving to the rich, will lead only to loss.
  107.
  108. Sayings of the Wise
  109. 17 The words of the wise:
  110.
  111. Incline your ear and hear my words,[b]
  112. and apply your mind to my teaching;
  113. 18 for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
  114. if all of them are ready on your lips.
  115. 19 So that your trust may be in the Lord,
  116. I have made them known to you today—yes, to you.
  117. 20 Have I not written for you thirty sayings
  118. of admonition and knowledge,
  119. 21 to show you what is right and true,
  120. so that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?
  121.
  122. 22 Do not rob the poor because they are poor,
  123. or crush the afflicted at the gate;
  124.
  125. Ecclesiastes 22 What do mortals get from all the toil and strain with which they toil under the sun?
  126.
  127. Song of Solomon X
  128.
  129. Wisdom X
  130.
  131.
  132. Sirach The Idler 22 The idler is like a filthy stone,
  133. and everyone hisses at his disgrace.
  134. 2 The idler is like the filth of dunghills;
  135. anyone that picks it up will shake it off his hand.
  136.
  137. Degenerate Children
  138. 3 It is a disgrace to be the father of an undisciplined son,
  139. and the birth of a daughter is a loss.
  140. 4 A sensible daughter obtains a husband of her own,
  141. but one who acts shamefully is a grief to her father.
  142. 5 An impudent daughter disgraces father and husband,
  143. and is despised by both.
  144. 6 Like music in time of mourning is ill-timed conversation,
  145. but a thrashing and discipline are at all times wisdom.[a]
  146.
  147. Wisdom and Folly
  148. 9 Whoever teaches a fool is like one who glues potsherds together,
  149. or who rouses a sleeper from deep slumber.
  150. 10 Whoever tells a story to a fool tells it to a drowsy man;
  151. and at the end he will say, ‘What is it?’
  152. 11 Weep for the dead, for he has left the light behind;
  153. and weep for the fool, for he has left intelligence behind.
  154. Weep less bitterly for the dead, for he is at rest;
  155. but the life of the fool is worse than death.
  156. 12 Mourning for the dead lasts seven days,
  157. but for the foolish or the ungodly it lasts all the days of their lives.
  158.
  159. 13 Do not talk much with a senseless person
  160. or visit an unintelligent person.[b]
  161. Stay clear of him, or you may have trouble,
  162. and be spattered when he shakes himself.
  163. Avoid him and you will find rest,
  164. and you will never be wearied by his lack of sense.
  165. 14 What is heavier than lead?
  166. And what is its name except ‘Fool’?
  167. 15 Sand, salt, and a piece of iron
  168. are easier to bear than a stupid person.
  169.
  170. 16 A wooden beam firmly bonded into a building
  171. is not loosened by an earthquake;
  172. so the mind firmly resolved after due reflection
  173. will not be afraid in a crisis.
  174. 17 A mind settled on an intelligent thought
  175. is like stucco decoration that makes a wall smooth.
  176. 18 Fences[c] set on a high place
  177. will not stand firm against the wind;
  178. so a timid mind with a fool’s resolve
  179. will not stand firm against any fear.
  180.
  181. The Preservation of Friendship
  182. 19 One who pricks the eye brings tears,
  183. and one who pricks the heart makes clear its feelings.
  184. 20 One who throws a stone at birds scares them away,
  185. and one who reviles a friend destroys a friendship.
  186. 21 Even if you draw your sword against a friend,
  187. do not despair, for there is a way back.
  188. 22 If you open your mouth against your friend,
  189. do not worry, for reconciliation is possible.
  190. But as for reviling, arrogance, disclosure of secrets, or a treacherous blow—
  191. in these cases any friend will take to flight.
  192. Isaiah Turn away from mortals,
  193. who have only breath in their nostrils,
  194. for of what account are they?
  195. A Warning of the Destruction of Jerusalem
  196. 22 The oracle concerning the valley of vision.
  197.
  198. What do you mean that you have gone up,
  199. all of you, to the housetops,
  200. 2 you that are full of shoutings,
  201. tumultuous city, exultant town?
  202. Your slain are not slain by the sword,
  203. nor are they dead in battle.
  204. 3 Your rulers have all fled together;
  205. they were captured without the use of a bow.[a]
  206. All of you who were found were captured,
  207. though they had fled far away.[b]
  208. 4 Therefore I said:
  209. Look away from me,
  210. let me weep bitter tears;
  211. do not try to comfort me
  212. for the destruction of my beloved people.
  213.
  214. 5 For the Lord God of hosts has a day
  215. of tumult and trampling and confusion
  216. in the valley of vision,
  217. a battering down of walls
  218. and a cry for help to the mountains.
  219. 6 Elam bore the quiver
  220. with chariots and cavalry,[c]
  221. and Kir uncovered the shield.
  222. 7 Your choicest valleys were full of chariots,
  223. and the cavalry took their stand at the gates.
  224. 8 He has taken away the covering of Judah.
  225.
  226. On that day you looked to the weapons of the House of the Forest, 9 and you saw that there were many breaches in the city of David, and you collected the waters of the lower pool. 10 You counted the houses of Jerusalem, and you broke down the houses to fortify the wall. 11 You made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you did not look to him who did it, or have regard for him who planned it long ago.
  227.
  228. 12 On that day the Lord God of hosts
  229. called to weeping and mourning,
  230. to baldness and putting on sackcloth;
  231. 13 but instead there was joy and festivity,
  232. killing oxen and slaughtering sheep,
  233. eating meat and drinking wine.
  234. ‘Let us eat and drink,
  235. for tomorrow we die.’
  236. 14 The Lord of hosts has revealed himself in my ears:
  237. Surely this iniquity will not be forgiven you until you die,
  238. says the Lord God of hosts.
  239.
  240. Denunciation of Self-Seeking Officials
  241. 15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts: Come, go to this steward, to Shebna, who is master of the household, and say to him: 16 What right do you have here? Who are your relatives here, that you have cut out a tomb here for yourself, cutting a tomb on the height, and carving a habitation for yourself in the rock? 17 The Lord is about to hurl you away violently, my man. He will seize firm hold of you, 18 whirl you round and round, and throw you like a ball into a wide land; there you shall die, and there your splendid chariots shall lie, O you disgrace to your master’s house! 19 I will thrust you from your office, and you will be pulled down from your post.
  242.
  243. 20 On that day I will call my servant Eliakim son of Hilkiah, 21 and will clothe him with your robe and bind your sash on him. I will commit your authority to his hand, and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. 22 I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and no one shall shut; he shall shut, and no one shall open.
  244.
  245.
  246. Jeremiah 22 Though you wash yourself with lye
  247. and use much soap,
  248. the stain of your guilt is still before me,
  249. says the Lord God.
  250.
  251. Exhortation to Repent
  252. 22 Thus says the Lord: Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word, 2 and say: Hear the word of the Lord, O King of Judah sitting on the throne of David—you, and your servants, and your people who enter these gates. 3 Thus says the Lord: Act with justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor anyone who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the alien, the orphan, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place. 4 For if you will indeed obey this word, then through the gates of this house shall enter kings who sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their servants, and their people. 5 But if you will not heed these words, I swear by myself, says the Lord, that this house shall become a desolation. 6 For thus says the Lord concerning the house of the king of Judah:
  253.
  254. You are like Gilead to me,
  255. like the summit of Lebanon;
  256. but I swear that I will make you a desert,
  257. an uninhabited city.[a]
  258. 7 I will prepare destroyers against you,
  259. all with their weapons;
  260. they shall cut down your choicest cedars
  261. and cast them into the fire.
  262.
  263. 8 And many nations will pass by this city, and all of them will say one to another, ‘Why has the Lord dealt in this way with that great city?’ 9 And they will answer, ‘Because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshipped other gods and served them.’
  264.
  265. 10 Do not weep for him who is dead,
  266. nor bemoan him;
  267. weep rather for him who goes away,
  268. for he shall return no more
  269. to see his native land.
  270.
  271. Message to the Sons of Josiah
  272. 11 For thus says the Lord concerning Shallum son of King Josiah of Judah, who succeeded his father Josiah, and who went away from this place: He shall return here no more, 12 but in the place where they have carried him captive he shall die, and he shall never see this land again.
  273.
  274. 13 Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness,
  275. and his upper rooms by injustice;
  276. who makes his neighbours work for nothing,
  277. and does not give them their wages;
  278. 14 who says, ‘I will build myself a spacious house
  279. with large upper rooms’,
  280. and who cuts out windows for it,
  281. panelling it with cedar,
  282. and painting it with vermilion.
  283. 15 Are you a king
  284. because you compete in cedar?
  285. Did not your father eat and drink
  286. and do justice and righteousness?
  287. Then it was well with him.
  288. 16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy;
  289. then it was well.
  290. Is not this to know me?
  291. says the Lord.
  292. 17 But your eyes and heart
  293. are only on your dishonest gain,
  294. for shedding innocent blood,
  295. and for practising oppression and violence.
  296.
  297. 18 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah:
  298.
  299. They shall not lament for him, saying,
  300. ‘Alas, my brother!’ or ‘Alas, sister!’
  301. They shall not lament for him, saying,
  302. ‘Alas, lord!’ or ‘Alas, his majesty!’
  303. 19 With the burial of a donkey he shall be buried—
  304. dragged off and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
  305.
  306. 20 Go up to Lebanon, and cry out,
  307. and lift up your voice in Bashan;
  308. cry out from Abarim,
  309. for all your lovers are crushed.
  310. 21 I spoke to you in your prosperity,
  311. but you said, ‘I will not listen.’
  312. This has been your way from your youth,
  313. for you have not obeyed my voice.
  314. 22 The wind shall shepherd all your shepherds,
  315. and your lovers shall go into captivity;
  316. then you will be ashamed and dismayed
  317. because of all your wickedness.
  318.
  319. Lamentations
  320. 22 You invited my enemies from all around
  321. as if for a day of festival;
  322. and on the day of the anger of the Lord
  323. no one escaped or survived;
  324. those whom I bore and reared
  325. my enemy has destroyed.
  326. Baruch 22 But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord and will not serve the king of Babylon,{{{{ 23 I will make to cease from the towns of Judah and from the region around Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, and the whole land will be a desolation without inhabitants.}}}}
  327. Ezekiel The Bloody City
  328. 22 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 You, mortal, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Then declare to it all its abominable deeds. 3 You shall say, Thus says the Lord God: A city! Shedding blood within itself; its time has come; making its idols, defiling itself. 4 You have become guilty by the blood that you have shed, and defiled by the idols that you have made; you have brought your day near, the appointed time of your years has come. Therefore I have made you a disgrace before the nations, and a mockery to all the countries. 5 Those who are near and those who are far from you will mock you, you infamous one, full of tumult.
  329.
  330. 6 The princes of Israel in you, every one according to his power, have been bent on shedding blood. 7 Father and mother are treated with contempt in you; the alien residing within you suffers extortion; the orphan and the widow are wronged in you. 8 You have despised my holy things, and profaned my sabbaths. 9 In you are those who slander to shed blood, those in you who eat upon the mountains, who commit lewdness in your midst. 10 In you they uncover their fathers’ nakedness; in you they violate women in their menstrual periods. 11 One commits abomination with his neighbour’s wife; another lewdly defiles his daughter-in-law; another in you defiles his sister, his father’s daughter. 12 In you, they take bribes to shed blood; you take both advance interest and accrued interest, and make gain of your neighbours by extortion; and you have forgotten me, says the Lord God.
  331.
  332. 13 See, I strike my hands together at the dishonest gain you have made, and at the blood that has been shed within you. 14 Can your courage endure, or can your hands remain strong in the days when I shall deal with you? I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it. 15 I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you through the countries, and I will purge your filthiness out of you. 16 And I[a] shall be profaned through you in the sight of the nations; and you shall know that I am the Lord.
  333.
  334. 17 The word of the Lord came to me: 18 Mortal, the house of Israel has become dross to me; all of them, silver,[b] bronze, tin, iron, and lead. In the smelter they have become dross. 19 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have all become dross, I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. 20 As one gathers silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin into a smelter, to blow the fire upon them in order to melt them; so I will gather you in my anger and in my wrath, and I will put you in and melt you. 21 I will gather you and blow upon you with the fire of my wrath, and you shall be melted within it. 22 As silver is melted in a smelter, so you shall be melted in it; and you shall know that I the Lord have poured out my wrath upon you.
  335.
  336.
  337. Daniel 2;22
  338. He reveals deep and hidden things;
  339. he knows what is in the darkness,
  340. and light dwells with him.
  341. Hosea and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil,
  342. and they shall answer Jezreel;[j]
  343. Joel Do not fear, you animals of the field,
  344. for the pastures of the wilderness are green;
  345. the tree bears its fruit,
  346. the fig tree and vine give their full yield.

  369. NEW TESTAMENT
  370.
  371. Matthew 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to the district of Galilee.
  372. The Parable of the Wedding Banquet
  373.
  374. 22 Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: 2 ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. 4 Again he sent other slaves, saying, “Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.” 5 But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 while the rest seized his slaves, maltreated them, and killed them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his slaves, “The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” 10 Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.
  375.
  376. 11 ‘But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, 12 and he said to him, “Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?” And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.’
  377.
  378. The Question about Paying Taxes
  379. 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. 16 So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?’ 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, ‘Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin used for the tax.’ And they brought him a denarius. 20 Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and whose title?’ 21 They answered, ‘The emperor’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ 22 When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

  385. Luke Jesus Is Presented in the Temple
  386. 22 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord {{{ 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’}}}
  387. The Plot to Kill Jesus
  388. 22 Now the festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was near. 2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Jesus[a] to death, for they were afraid of the people.
  389.
  390. 3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve; 4 he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers of the temple police about how he might betray him to them. 5 They were greatly pleased and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them when no crowd was present.
  391.
  392. The Preparation of the Passover
  393. 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 So Jesus[b] sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may eat it.’ 9 They asked him, ‘Where do you want us to make preparations for it?’ 10 ‘Listen,’ he said to them, ‘when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters 11 and say to the owner of the house, “The teacher asks you, ‘Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’” 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, already furnished. Make preparations for us there.’ 13 So they went and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.
  394.
  395. The Institution of the Lord’s Supper
  396. 14 When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. 15 He said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I tell you, I will not eat it[c] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.’ 17 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, ‘Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’ 19 Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 20 And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.[d] 21 But see, the one who betrays me is with me, and his hand is on the table. 22 For the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but woe to that one by whom he is betrayed!’
  397.
  398. John 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

  400. Acts 22 ‘You that are Israelites,[a] listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth,[b] a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know— 23 this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law.
  401.
  402. 22 ‘Brothers and fathers, listen to the defence that I now make before you.’
  403.
  404. 2 When they heard him addressing them in Hebrew,[a] they became even more quiet. Then he said:
  405.
  406. 3 ‘I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, educated strictly according to our ancestral law, being zealous for God, just as all of you are today. 4 I persecuted this Way up to the point of death by binding both men and women and putting them in prison, 5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify about me. From them I also received letters to the brothers in Damascus, and I went there in order to bind those who were there and to bring them back to Jerusalem for punishment.

  408. Paul Tells of His Conversion
  409. 6 ‘While I was on my way and approaching Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone about me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” 8 I answered, “Who are you, Lord?” Then he said to me, “I am Jesus of Nazareth[b] whom you are persecuting.” 9 Now those who were with me saw the light but did not hear the voice of the one who was speaking to me. 10 I asked, “What am I to do, Lord?” The Lord said to me, “Get up and go to Damascus; there you will be told everything that has been assigned to you to do.” 11 Since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, those who were with me took my hand and led me to Damascus.
  410.
  411. 12 ‘A certain Ananias, who was a devout man according to the law and well spoken of by all the Jews living there, 13 came to me; and standing beside me, he said, “Brother Saul, regain your sight!” In that very hour I regained my sight and saw him. 14 Then he said, “The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will, to see the Righteous One and to hear his own voice; 15 for you will be his witness to all the world of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now why do you delay? Get up, be baptized, and have your sins washed away, calling on his name.”
  412.
  413. Paul Sent to the Gentiles
  414. 17 ‘After I had returned to Jerusalem and while I was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw Jesus[c] saying to me, “Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.” 19 And I said, “Lord, they themselves know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you. 20 And while the blood of your witness Stephen was shed, I myself was standing by, approving and keeping the coats of those who killed him.” 21 Then he said to me, “Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.”’
  415.
  416. Paul and the Roman Tribune

  422. 2 Corinthians 2 1 So I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. 2 For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? 3 And I wrote as I did, so that when I came, I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice; for I am confident about all of you, that my joy would be the joy of all of you. 4 For I wrote to you out of much distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain, but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.
  423.
  424. Forgiveness for the Offender
  425. 5 But if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but to some extent—not to exaggerate it—to all of you. 6 This punishment by the majority is enough for such a person; 7 so now instead you should forgive and console him, so that he may not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 So I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. 9 I wrote for this reason: to test you and to know whether you are obedient in everything. 10 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ. 11 And we do this so that we may not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.
  426.
  427. Paul’s Anxiety in Troas
  428. 12 When I came to Troas to proclaim the good news of Christ, a door was opened for me in the Lord; 13 but my mind could not rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said farewell to them and went on to Macedonia.
  429.
  430. 14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 16 to the one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? 17 For we are not peddlers of God’s word like so many;[a] but in Christ we speak as persons of sincerity, as persons sent from God and standing in his presence.

  474. The River of Life
  475. 22 Then the angel[a] showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life[b] with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants[c] will worship him; 4 they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign for ever and ever.
  476.
  477. 6 And he said to me, ‘These words are trustworthy and true, for the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants[d] what must soon take place.’

  481. Epilogue and Benediction
  482. 8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me; 9 but he said to me, ‘You must not do that! I am a fellow-servant[e] with you and your comrades[f] the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!’
  483.
  484. 10 And he said to me, ‘Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. 11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.’
