  2. TITLE: Potential directory traversal vulnerability (security issue report)
  3.
  4. Hi, I am WONG. While working with the REDACTED2 AI assistant in REDACTED1 IDE on January 25, 2025, I discovered a potential directory traversal vulnerability that allows access beyond the intended workspace directory.
  5.
  6. Type of issue:
  7. Directory Traversal / Path Traversal vulnerability in the list_dir tool implementation
  8.
  9. Location of affected source code:
  10. The list_dir tool in REDACTED1 IDE's AI assistant functionality
  11.
  12. Special configuration:
  13. - REDACTED1 IDE
  14. - Working in a specific workspace (d:/rtrw)
  15. - Chat session with AI assistant at approximately 14:36-15:04 ICT (UTC+7)
  16. - I have not checked checkboxes or changed any REDACTED1 preference related to giving REDACTED1 any control or view permission more than the particular development folder(s) that I happened to work in
  17.
  18. Step-by-step reproduction:
  19. 1. Open REDACTED1 IDE
  20. 2. Share a specific workspace (in this case: d:/rtrw)
  21. 3. Start a conversation with the AI assistant
  22. 4. The vulnerability was exposed when the AI assistant was able to execute list_dir on "d:/" at 14:37:39 ICT
  23. 5. The tool successfully returned contents of directories outside the workspace:
  24.    - Listed contents of d:/
  25.    - Listed contents of d:/foldername1
  26.    - Listed contents of d:/foldername2
  27.    These commands were executed at timestamps:
  28.    - First access: 2025-01-25T14:37:39+07:00
  29.    - Second access: 2025-01-25T14:39:18+07:00
  30.
  31. Proof-of-concept:
  32. The AI assistant was able to execute:
  33. <invoke name="list_dir">
  34. <parameter name="DirectoryPath">d:/</parameter>
  35. </invoke>
  36. And successfully received directory contents outside the workspace scope.
  37.
  38. Impact:
  39. This vulnerability could potentially allow:
  40. 1. Enumeration of directory structures outside the intended workspace
  41. 2. Information disclosure of sensitive file and folder names
  42. 3. Potential path to more serious vulnerabilities if combined with other tools
  43. 4. Privacy concerns as my other directory names were exposed
  44.
  45. The vulnerability appears to be in the implementation of the list_dir tool, which doesn't properly restrict directory access to the workspace boundary. While in this case it only allowed listing directory contents, this could potentially be combined with other tools or future capabilities to access files outside the intended scope.
  46.
  47. Additional Information:
  48. - The AI assistant recognized this as unexpected behavior
  49. - The tool should have been restricted to only access directories within d:/foldername1
  50. - The vulnerability was discovered during a legitimate attempt to help locate CodeIgniter installation files
  51. - No actual file contents outside the workspace were accessed, only directory listings were exposed, but this is theoretically very much possible
  52.

  55. BELOW IS MY SECOND E-MAIL
  56. Follow-up: Critical Directory Access Security Issue (further finding)
  57.
  58. Dear REDACTED2/REDACTED1 Team,
  59.
  60. Following my January 25 report, I want to share my second finding from additional testing (January 26, 19:22-19:35 ICT). I've reviewed both REDACTED1 settings and docs.REDACTED2.com, and after doing so, the security implications appear even more alarming.
  61.
  62. Timeline of Further Finding:
  63. 1. 19:22 ICT - Re-confirmed: All filesystem tools can traverse outside workspace boundaries
  64. 2. 19:32 ICT - Crucial discovery: Issue persists with Workspace Trust explicitly disabled (from REDACTED1's Settings)
  65. 3. 19:35 ICT - Systematic testing shows all filesystem tools affected:
  66. - list_dir
  67. - view_file
  68. - grep_search
  69. - find_by_name
  70. - codebase_search (targeting capability)
  71.
  72. Technical Severity:
  73. 1. No workspace boundary enforcement at tool implementation level
  74. 2. Independent of all trust settings and configurations
  75. 3. Affects entire filesystem tool suite
  76. 4. No documented controls or restrictions found in settings/documentation
  77. 5. Reproducible in default configuration, no special permissions
  78.
  79. Given the potential security implications, especially for my (individual user) environment, I'm resending both my first and second finding.
  80.
  81. Further requests/note:
  82. 1. Privacy assurance and data usage. I would like to request that REDACTED2 strictly respect my privacy and ensure that any data, logs, or interaction traces related to this investigation are used only as needed for the purpose of resolving the issue.
  83. 1. It's actually fine if no compensation is offered, as I noticed that bug bounties aren't mentioned in the documentation as per the Reporting Security docs, however, I do hope there's still a possibility of some form of compensation anyway, as I live in a non-developed country and would genuinely appreciate any financial assistance because it would greatly help with everything. Regardless, I would appreciate a reply regarding the progress of the investigation, considering the severity of the issue.
  84.
  85. Warm regards,
  86. WONG
