  1. Posting by email is one of the best experiences that Posterous offers. To post, simply email post@posterous.com and we'll post the content of your message and attachments and we'll email you back a link to your post. However, there are a ton of other cool things you can do with email that are only possible using Posterous.
  2. Topic: In this tutorial, you will learn how to take advantage of all the features that Posterous offers when Posting by Email.
  3.
  4. Instructions:
  5. Posting via Email Basics
  6. When you email post@posterous.com, your email will be published to the primary site on your Posterous account.
  7. If you only have one site, that's your primary! If you have more than one, email post@sitename.posterous.com, where "sitename.posterous.com" is the URL for your site (this site's URL is howdoi.posterous.com).
  8. To create a draft, email draft@posterous.com or draft@sitename.posterous.com
  9. Inline Images
  10. By default, Posterous will create a gallery for all of the images that you've attached to an email. This is great if you want to share an album of photos for an event or a group of related photos. This isn't so great if you want to write a how to guide. Thankfully, Posterous makes it easy to prevent a gallery from being automatically created and have images appear exactly where you intend them to.
  11. If you use Mac OS X or iOS, all you have to do is put "((nogallery))" in the subject line and we won't automatically create a gallery for your pictures, they will appear right where you inserted them. Some email clients don't support inline images, but Gmail does, if you specifically enable it.
  12. Enabling Inline Images in Gmail
  13. 1. Go to Settings > Labs:
  14.
  15. 2. Enable Inserting Images:
  16.
  17. 3. Save your settings.
  18. Use the insert image icon in the formatting toolbar to insert an inline image:
  19.
  20. Now you can enter ((nogallery)) into the subject line when you email your post and your images will appear right where you inserted them into your email, instead of in a gallery at the bottom or top of the email.
  21. Choosing which sites to Autopost to
  22. Normal posts created by emailing post@posterous.com autopost to all your other sites. You can also specify where you want to post via the email address you send to.
  23. Email posterous@posterous.com if you don't want Autopost at all.
  24. Email a service: twitter@posterous.com to Autopost to just that service type.
  25. Email multiple services: twitter+facebook@posterous.com to Autopost to all services listed.
  26. You can use the following service names to email to: twitter, facebook, flickr, picasa, blog, blogger, tumblr, youtube, vimeo, friendfeed, delicious, laconica, identica, livejournal, plurk, shopify.
  27. Selective Autopost
  28. Do you have multiple sites of the same type? For example, do you have two Twitter accounts but you only want to autopost to one of them? Email #text@posterous.com to send only to sites where the url contains that text.
  29. If you have apple.wordpress.com and banana.wordpress.com, you can email #apple@posterous.com to update apple but not banana. Combine here also. #apple+twitter@posterous.com will post to apple.wordpress.com and all your twitter sites.
  30. Tagging
  31. Add tags to your post by email by entering them in the subject line: ((tags: New York, food)).
  32. Examples:
  33. For this post, I initially emailed draft@howdoi.posterous.com with the subject line: How to get the most out of posting by email ((nogallery)) ((tag: Email))
  34. I used inline images to put screenshots for how to enable inline images in Gmail and then double checked my draft in Manage before publishing it to the site.
  35. Theme Recommendations:
  36. Posting by email is compatible with all sites and themes, check out the dozens of themes that are already available by clicking Edit Theme in the Settings section of Manage or check out a preview of some awesome upcoming themes from OBox Design.
  37. Expert Tips:
  38. Posterous automatically removes most email signatures from your post. If you have a nonstandard signature or if your corporate email server appends a nonstandard signature to outgoing mail, you can use #end in the body text to prevent it from posting.
  39. Email private@posterous.com or private@sitename.posterous.com to create a private post.
  40. Add a pagebreak by using #more in the body text of your email.
