  3.
  4. Spicy Cherry - Some competitors of Dr Pepper use the name "spicy cherry" for the flavor
  5. Amaretto - Amaretto is an almond-flavored spirit with a similar taste to Dr Pepper
  6. Prune Juice - Prune juice is a commonly speculated ingredient of Dr Pepper
  7. MiO Black Cherry - A popular copycat recipe for Dr Pepper uses MiO Black Cherry Water Enhancer and Topo Chico Mineral Water - https://www.intheknow.com/2020/08/28/we-tried-the-tiktok-famous-homemade-dr-pepper-recipe-heres-our-take/
  8. Glen Powell's list - Glen Powell came up with his own list of 23 flavors on his Youtube channel Glen and Friends Cooking - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG499GYHdgk
  9. *Cherry - Because "Spicy Cherry" is used to imitate Dr Pepper, it's likely Dr Pepper contains cherry
  10. *Almond - Because amaretto is so similar to Dr Pepper, it's likely Dr Pepper contains almond
  11. Cane Sugar - Dr Pepper was originally sweetened with cane sugar, which many people prefered the flavor of
  12. HFCS - Modern Dr Pepper is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup
  13. "Barbecue flavor" - In an AskReddit thread about Dr Pepper, u/TheBestestTitan described the flavor of Dr Pepper as "BBQ Soda". His comment was published in an article on georgetakei.com - https://www.georgetakei.com/people-describe-dr-pepper-taste-2640778094.html
  14. Different formula overseas - Many people report that Dr Pepper in other countries has an extremely different flavor than Dr Pepper made in the US
  15. *Anise/Fennel - Anise is listed on almost every list of 23 flavors. Fennel has a very similar taste to anise
  16. D. Pepper's Pepsin Bitters - At the pharmacy where Dr Pepper was invented, a notebook was found containing a recipe called "D. Pepper's Pepsin Bitters". It's possible that this is an early version of the Dr Pepper formula - https://historical.ha.com/heritage-auctions-press-releases-and-news/-dr.-pepper-s-pepsin-bitters-recipe-from-old-corner-drug-store-ledger-at-auction-in-dallas-may-13.s?releaseId=1674
  17. *Vanilla - Vanilla is listed on almost every list of 23 flavors, and is a common flavor in sodas
  18. Some flavors are compound (cola, root beer) - According to the story of Dr Pepper's invention, Charles Alderton mixed several different soda syrups in his pharmacy. It's unclear whether "23 flavors" refers to 23 different syrups, or 23 flavors used to create these syrups (for example, root beer syrup might be made with sassafras, sarsaparilla, wintergreen etc).
  19. DB's list - DB was a Yahoo Answers user who came up with a list of 23 flavors, which later spread around the internet - https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070925195229AA9i86E
  20. Traditional list (Rum, Tomato) - The traditional list is a common list of the 23 flavors. It is notable for having rum and tomato as two of its flavors. I call this the traditional list because I can't find its original author - http://web.archive.org/web/20200721075436/http://www.kongregate.com/forums/2-off-topic/topics/12920-what-are-the-23-flavors-of-dr-pepper
  21. Eric Mohrman's list - Eric Mohrman is a food and lifestyle writer. In 2007, he wrote a blog post where he came up with his own list of 23 flavors, with help from three friends who were chefs and sommeliers - https://pastebin.com/QexrdW7v
  22. *Cinnamon - Cinnamon is used in similar sodas, such as cola
  23. *Orange - Orange is a common ingredient in soda, especially bitter orange, which has a deep spice-like flavor
  24. Dr Pepper based on dandelion & burdock - According to Wikipedia, Charles Alderton went to college in England. It's possible that he learned how to make English dandelion & burdock soda and later adapted it into Dr Pepper. This is just my own speculation though - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Alderton
  25. *Nutmeg - Nutmeg is used in similar sodas, such as cola
  26. Traditional list original length - There is an older version of the traditional list (above) that contains almost twice as many flavors. I assume that it was shortened to 23 to fit better with the idea of 23 flavors - https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080525144155AAjqmdc
  27. New Orleans Mead - Mead, or New Orleans Mead, was a style of soda from the late 19th century that was flavored with fruit and a blend of spices. It's possible that this style of soda influenced the creation of Dr Pepper, but this is just my speculation - https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Standard_Manual_of_Soda_and_Other_Be/G_dAAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=new+orleans+mead&pg=PA79&printsec=frontcover - https://www.google.com/books/edition/Cases_Determined_in_the_St_Louis_and_the/LktFAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22new+orleans+mead%22&pg=PA413&printsec=frontcover
  28. Traditional list based off of Mohrman's - As far as I can tell, Mohrman's list predates every instance of the traditional list online. All of the ingredients on Mohrman's list also appear in the original traditional list. It's possible that the traditional list was an expansion of Mohrman's, or was based off of it in some way. Again this is just my speculation, but since there's no other explanation for the origin of the traditional list, I think it's a possibility
  29. *Juniper - Juniper berries are an uncommon spice that are used in some root beer recipes
  30. *Pineapple - Pineapple is used frequently in "Fancy Mixed Drinks", a chapter from The Dispenser's Formulary by A. Emil Hiss
  31. Artificial prune flavor (non-juice) - According to the Dr Pepper official website, "Dr Pepper is a unique blend of natural and artificial flavors; it does not contain prune juice.". Even if it doesn't contain prune juice, it's still possible it contains some artificial prune flavoring that isn't juice - https://www.drpepper.com/en/faq#13
  32. *Tonka - Tonka is a spice similar to vanilla. It was an ingredient in sodas at the time Dr Pepper was invented, but it was made illegal in the US in 1954
  33. Dr Pepper contains actual rum - According to the Usenet leak (below), "denatured rum" is an ingredient in Dr Pepper
  34. Usenet leak - In 2005, a list of a few Dr Pepper ingredients was uploaded to Usenet. The original uploader, Max Wolheim, claimed that he got these ingredients from an anonymous friend who worked for the Dr Pepper company - http://web.archive.org/web/20200112014236/https://faqs.cs.uu.nl/na-dir/drink/dr-pepper.html
  35. *Salt - I have found one list where salt is a flavor - https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070315184248AAcafPL
  36. 23 flavors made up - I can't find any record of the Dr Pepper origin story from Charles Alderton's lifetime. It's possible that some or all of the story was made up for marketing
  37.
  38. Star * indicates one single speculated ingredient
  39.
  40. ***CORRECTION: On line 30 Pineapple, the title of the book should be "The Standard Manual of Soda" not "The Dispenser's Formulary"
