  1. On this planet, the midday light was like an Earth sunset.
  2. And now that it was sunset, the sky was deep red against a black horizon.
  3. Gordon and Alyx had both been working on fixing up the teleporter room, but they were now working by flashlight and making little more progress.
  4.
  5. "Want to eat raw alien, or would you rather see if this ship has some food?" asked Alyx.
  6. Gordon pondered the question. Eat something of questionable digestibility that could contain alien pathogens, or eat ancient tinned food? He had an internal freakout when Alyx added "And yes, you can eat ancient tinned food, I should know."; but Alyx didn't seem to be able to read that from his mind, so he was content she was not a mind-reader.
  7.
  8. Heading into the galley, Gordon swept the area with his torch. None of the cupboards had fallen open despite all the carnage, as they were all latched; the ice chest however had managed to destroy not only all the crockery, but the cupboards containing the crockery.
  9. Gordon opened a cupboard, only to find it was bare. He opened several more, and he'd only find some utensils or fragments of crockery.
  10. He took a peek in the ice chest too, then immediately slammed it shut again.
  11. Despite killing hundreds of aliens and transhumans, even he could only stomach so much.
  12. Taking another look in the ice chest, he tried not to look too much at the creepy dried-out husk of a human, and quickly took a few cans, a can opener, and a book.
  13.
  14. Bringing the food back, he didn't mention the corpse to Alyx; there was no need to spoil her appetite, and with his already done for, he read the book he found as Alyx ate.
  15.
  16. "Congratulations on finding me! As you can see, to keep warm, I'm using this freezer for insulation. It'll give me enough time to write this guide on my team's findings; they've already lost hope, and leapt to their doom. I can't imagine a rescue is likely out here myself: So if this book proves useful, may I be the first man buried on an alien world?"
  17. The book was hardly a dying man's last words: The writer had clearly survived for quite a long time, as the book went on to explain and illustrate not just the ship's teleportation technology, but also details of the multiverse.
  18. Gordon was very glad to have his hands on this, and very glad the Combine didn't find it and were too focused on securing the Borealis.
  19. He rejoiced with Alyx at the greatly improved odds of making it home, but repairing the ship would have to wait.
  20.
  21. A short while later, Dog, Gordon, and Alyx carried the ice chest to the mud that had spared them from harm in the crash-land. It sat on the surface as they set it down, but Dog pushed down on the chest and it sank slowly, as the sun sank equally slowly below the horizon.
  22. As night fell upon the group, many bright flashes of light could be seen near the peak of a nearby mountain, all in the same place.
  23. Unknowing of what might prowl the night, they headed back for the ship, and decided to leave their troubles until morning.
