Snowfall - A RenMass fanfic.

Snowfall.

It was a snowy day in south Sinnoh. Canalave city was experiencing light snowfall, and couples watched the snowflakes fall on the brick paths. Kids played in the snow outside the city. However, not all citizens loved the snow. Joey was a young adult who had lived in Canalave for 3 years now, and had grown attached to the library in the city. “Good evening, Monika!”, the brown-haired bespectacled boy said to the receptionist. “Hey Ren! Would you like a writing tip?~”, Monika smiled as she spoke. Ren was a nickname people in the library gave Joey. “No thanks, I think I’ll check out the history books today”, Ren said, as he walked up the stairs to the second floor.

Ren was dressed in long, warm attire, a common dress code in the snowy Canalave. He wrapped himself with a scarf and his glasses were starting to fog from the heat of his own breath. He was 5’8” and thin, but still was strong for weighing so little.

Ren was never a fan of going outside and had only connected with the regulars in the library. He was noticed by Cynthia, the champion, in the first week of arriving in the city, so many people (especially girls) took a shine to him. Ren, however, was uninterested in relationships. He had seen a good friend go through a rough break-up, and since then he never wanted to engage in a relationship.

Ren slid a book out of one of the shelves, exposing the opposite side of the room. His eyes were immediately drawn to a short brunette girl reading a book on Pokemon prehistory. He quickly tried to avoid staring, but the girl’s beauty only caused him to stare more. As the girl turned around, her hair flowing behind her, she caught Ren looking at her. Her emerald eyes looked longingly at Ren, as she let out a soft sigh. Taken aback by her sheer beauty, Ren tried to turn around as fast as he could, only to accidentally step on a Pikachu’s tail and get shocked. He heard a sweet giggle from behind the shelf, and then heard footsteps walking away. Ren quickly grabbed his books and shuffled after it, brushing his hair down from the electrocution he just experienced.

The girl was just shorter than him, with long brown hair tied so that she could wear a scarf. She dressed a little too sophisticatedly for a normal visitor of the library, as per Ren’s first thoughts of her. She seemed to be visiting from the Kalos region, as shown by her Mega Earring on her left ear.

As the girl walked out of the library, she turned around to see Ren standing behind her. “H-hi… I’m Roey… I mean Jen… No!”, Ren stuttered. The girl smiled sweetly and said, “Haha, I know who you are, Ren. I’m Kass, but my friends call me Mass.” Kass raised her hand for a handshake. Ren shook her hand softly but with confidence. “You’re the one that Cynthia noticed, yes? I would love to battle you.”, Kass said sweetly. “Sure, but let’s have a wager. If I win, I get to buy you a cup of coffee to apologize for me staring, and if you win I will trade you one of my shinies.”, Ren said confidently, exposing his belt with 6 Pokemon. “1v1, okay?”, Kass said, getting into her zone for battling. Ren threw out his signature Pokemon, Raichu, and Kass sent out her own, a seemingly shiny Gengar.

“There’s a reason I agreed to this matchup, Ren! You need to beat my signature Pokemon here, but I have some help!”, Kass exclaimed as she pointed to the earring Ren noticed a bit ago. “Gengar, hear my plea! Mega evolve!”. Mass’ Gengar underwent a sudden transformation, seen only a few times by Ren over his travels. A pale white Mega Gengar faced Ren’s Raichu. “Oh sh—"

~~After a while~~

“Use Thunder!”, Ren said in an oddly nervous manner, as if he was distracted. A large bolt of lightning crashed down from the snowy atmosphere, electrocuting the Gengar. Onlookers cheered as Gengar keeled over, signaling that Ren and Raichu won the match. Ren smiled sweetly as he saw Mass get upset for a moment for losing, but she quickly cheered up. “That was close… well, I agreed to the wager, so let’s go.” Kass giggled as she withdrew her Gengar. She grabbed Ren’s hand, causing him to blush vigorously. “L-let’s go… hehe”, Ren said nervously. He had never been on a date before and being with a girl so pretty was exciting to him. They walked into the Pokemon center together and grabbed 2 Tapu Cocoas. Ren and Mass talked for an hour about various things, like where Mass was from and a story where Ren found a shiny Geodude only for it to explode. “HAHA, that’s both tragic and hilarious, Ren!”, Kass said.

This chatter went on for a bit longer, soon moving to more intimate topics. Ren asked Mass if she had a boyfriend, but her blushing and quick denial proved she wasn’t the type to date. Ren slumped his back against the chair, as the air caught a dead awkward silence. “I-I’m sorry for bringing it up, Kass”, Ren said. “No, No, that’s fine! Actually… Ren, could I tell you something? I-I really like you, but… I’m afraid that if we talk longer…”, she sighed. “O-oh… I-I understand, Mass… I’m also… afraid of love.”, Ren whispered. Neither Ren nor Mass had ever been in a relationship before, so they were both unsure of how to take their own feelings.

Ren took a quick glance out of the window to see that daylight was fading. “It’s getting late… do you want to do this sometime again?”, he asked nervously. “I-I’m not sure, but now that we have each other’s numbers on our Pokenavs, we’ll find each other”, Kass said, regretting her seeming rejection. Ren sighed deeply but held a smile as they walked out of the Pokemon center. As Mass walked away from the center and towards a hotel, Ren said with slight enthusiasm but more sadness, “I’ll see you around, Mass!” What was this feeling? This urge to talk with Kass even though they had only just met? This shyness around her? Was this… love?
“Kass, wait!”, Ren shouted. She turned around with a start and nearly ran back through the snow at Ren, as he jogged towards her. They collided in a warm embrace. “I-I know how you feel about relationships, Kass, and I feel the same way… but something about you is special, and I’ve never felt the way I do with you with any other girl.” Ren softly held Kass’ face, and then let go of the embrace to show her something.

“Ninetales, I choose you!”, Ren called. A blue, cooling Ninetales came out of his Luxury Ball, standing proudly. “An alolan Ninetales?! Wow, I’ve never seen one of those.”, Kass whispered. “Serenity, could you please use Aurora Veil after getting some snowfall?”, Ren asked his partner. Kass looked up to see a slow fall of tiny snowflakes begin above them. A snowflake landed on her nose, and both Ren and she laughed as Kass’ Gengar tried to make snow angels. “Now, sit down and look up, Kass”, Ren said as he fell into the snow and patted a spot next to him. Kass sat down slowly and looked up, and was treated to a beautiful scene. Ninetales had created an aurora in the sky, and Kass’ eyes glittered as the light show danced across the night sky.

“Kass… I-I really like you… And I want to try my best to make you happy, as more than just a friend…”, Ren said softly. “I love you, and… uhhh… ah…”, Ren stuttered. Kass put a finger on his lips and said, “I love you too, Ren. And you’re right about the fact that I don’t like relationships, but I felt the same way about you as you did about me. I accept your confession.”, Kass smiled as she said.

Ren withdrew his Ninetales, and Kass did the same for her Gengar. Ren walked his girlfriend to the hotel she was staying at, but asked quickly and abruptly, “Would you like to stay the night with me?” Kass laughed but she agreed. They quickly got to Ren’s house, and they changed out of their warm clothes. “WAIT! I forgot I didn’t bring my nightclothes!”, Kass exclaimed. Both Ren and Mass were embarrassed and confused of what to do, but Ren quickly gave her one of his shirts. It was too big for her, but it was comfortable, and Mass loved the scent of Ren around her.

Before going to bed, Mass came up to Ren and said, “Thank you for letting me stay the night, and more importantly… thank you for making me the happiest girl ever.” Before Ren could answer at all, he saw Kass leaning in. Her long, flowing hair was pristine and laid against her shoulders. Her eyes were closed, but her bright green eyes were imprinted in Ren’s mind. He closed his eyes and slowly placed his hands behind Mass. Ren and Mass’ first kiss was a magical experience. Kass tasted faintly of strawberries, Ren’s favorite fruit, and Ren’s hair felt like soft cotton as she ran her fingers through it. After about a minute of locking lips, they pulled away and smiled at each other.

That day in Canalave city, two soulmates had finally found each other.
