Crystal batteries

  1. Laser Saber's "crystal battery" using common chemicals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mzq_qWIhamQ. Powers an LED for 4+ years. Crystal cells are generally low amps (about 20-30ma) but the voltage can last a long time. Ideal for powering an LED.
  2. John Hutchinson crystal batteries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFoBE7jEvUY.
  3. Youtube search for "crystal battery". https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=crystal+battery.
  4. Making borax crystal battery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd7vKYw4sjw.
    1. PREP. Get copper tubing. Get magnesium fire starter, cut magnesium block into thirds. This will go in the center of the copper pipe. Coat magnesium rods in olive oil. Sand inside of copper pipe. Tape bottom of copper pipe, seal with epoxy.
    2. COOK. 1 cup water, heat water, do not boil. Get 20 Mule Team borax crystals, add 1 cup borax to boiling water slowly, a little at a time, stirring until it's dissolved then adding rest of 1 cup borax. Heat and stir mixture until mixture is saturated with borax and solution is clear. Stir with plastic, silicone or non-metal utensil. Add a little more borax (2-3 tablespoons?), stir until solution is clear. Repeat adding borax until solution remains cloudy.
    3. POUR. Wait until mixture is 130-170F degrees, then pour into cells. Use a laser non-touch thermometer or candy thermometer.
  5. Crystal battery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAfZSM56sGk using Epson salts, potassium chloride.
  6. V3 crystal battery mix by BackRoom Labs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6yL6YUnV3E.
  7. Crystal battery by BackRoom Labs using borax, alum. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G93vU-qRaw. This one heats the copper pipe then dips it into a borax solution to make it a semi-conductor.
  8. Crystal battery by Naoki Kashima. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRUEbgYS_xY.

Converting heat to electricity

  1. 2011. New alloy can generate electricity from heat. https://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2011-06/new-alloy-can-convert-heat-directly-electricity/. "A new multiferroic material begins as a non-magnetic material then suddenly becomes strongly magnetic as the piece of copper below it is heated a small amount.University of Minnesota. A new alloy with unique properties can convert heat directly into electricity, according to researchers at the University of Minnesota. The alloy, a multiferroic composite of nickel, cobalt, manganese and tin, can be either non-magnetic and highly magnetic, depending on its temperature."
  2. 2019-07-01. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41565-019-0483-1. Paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41565-019-0483-1.
  3. 2019-07-10. Engineers develop chip that converts wasted heat to usable energy. It's estimated that as much as two-thirds of energy consumed in the U.S. each year is wasted as heat. Take for example, car engines, laptop computers, cell phones, even refrigerators, that heat up with overuse. https://phys.org/news/2019-07-chip-usable-energy.html, https://www.nanowerk.com/nanotechnology-news2/newsid=53156.php, https://www.technology.org/2019/07/11/beat-the-heat/, https://lithium-news.com/2019/07/11/engineers-develop-chip-that-converts-wasted-heat-to-usable-energy/.
