- Long story short, because I wanted his wings to be a different colour.
- Long story long:
- In universe reason goes along the lines of DNA getting a small, benign mutation during development as a unborn foal that makes his feathers the same colour as his mane. Nothing wrong with that in terms of DNA, just a quirk.
- I liken it to how Pipsqueak had that spot over his eye and back in the chapter I'm writing right now. (Inspired to explain it in story because of the question in this thread a day or two ago.)
- Out of that universe and into the real world? A few reasons.
- My first idea for his base colour was white, but I didn't want to go white because Blackjack.
- Seeing as he's a pegasus, I next considered a rust colour, but given Calamity is described to be a rusty colour, I didn't want to copy that style.
- Then I thought about red, but then Red Eye is red and other things, so didn't want red.
- So then I decided black/charcoal.
- Then came his name. I had to think up a name for him.
- The first name I thought of was Cherry Sundae, but I decided that was way too feminine. I ended up giving this name to the second M.C, which I've come to greatly appreciate myself for.
- Red Wings was one of the other names, though I didn't like that because Red Eye.
- I wrote down another name, can't remember what it was, didn't like it.
- Then I considered Crimson Wings, and very much liked it.
- Crimson Wings allows him to have a name that makes it obvious he's a pegasus, for one. It also denotes the colour of his wings being different to his coat, because I simply liked that idea.
- So, why did I let myself do it in the end? Dark grey/black (depending on interpretation) and red?
- Because I like black/red.
- Also because when I said it was definitely what I wanted to have, I had just come out of an operation (having my dick chopped up) and I was high as fuck on medication and what they used to put me under in the first place.
- I plan to put some metaphorical meaning behind it in the story later on, but the base idea was because I liked it.
