  1. Hi GSoC students,
  2.
  3. We are proud to announce that we are holding Google Summer of Code [1]
  4. again in 2014 - a very special GSoC - the 10th instance of the
  5. program! Yes, GSoC has been going on that long! We will be doing a
  6. bunch of interesting things to promote GSoC and celebrate the
  7. students, mentors and projects that have made the program so
  8. successful.
  9.
  10. 1. The OSPO team will be visiting 10 countries around the world where
  11. we've seen high participation over the last 9 years.
  12. 2. We're raising the student stipend by 10% to $5500!
  13. 3. We'll be hosting a 10-year reunion event on Google's campus for
  14. students and mentors next year. Stay tuned for more details!
  15.
  16. If you would like to help spread the word about GSoC, we have
  17. presentations [2], logos [3], and flyers [4] for you to use. Please
  18. host meetups, tell your friends and colleagues about the program, go
  19. to conferences, talk to people about the program, and just generally
  20. do all the awesome word-of-mouth stuff you do every year to promote
  21. the program.
  22.
  23. The GSoC calendar, FAQ, and events timeline have all been updated with
  24. this year's important dates, so please refer to those for the
  25. milestones for this year's program.
  26.
  27. Please consider translating the presentations and/or flyers into your
  28. native language and submitting them directly to me to post on the
  29. wiki. Localization for our material is integral to reaching the widest
  30. possible audience around the world. If you decide to translate a
  31. flyer, please fill out our form to request a thank you gift for your
  32. effort. [5]
  33.
  34. If you decide to host a meetup, please email me to at least 3 weeks
  35. before the meetup to let me know the date, time, and location so I can
  36. put it on the GSoC calendar. Also, remember to take pictures at your
  37. meetup and write up a blog post for our blog using our provided
  38. template for formatting [6]. If you need promotional items for your
  39. attendees, please fill out our form [7] to request some; we're happy
  40. to send some along, but you need to give us a minimum of 3 weeks prior
  41. to your event. We can provide up to about 25 pens, notebooks, or
  42. stickers and/or a few t-shirts. Please keep in mind, though, that
  43. shipping restrictions and timeline vary country-to-country; request
  44. items early to make sure they get there on time! If you have questions
  45. about hosting meetups, please see the section in our FAQ [8].
  46.
  47. Please consider applying to participate as an organization again this
  48. year or maybe joining as a mentor for your favorite organization if
  49. they are selected this year.
  50.
  51. And for those of you with younger siblings, family members, friends,
  52. etc. that are 13-17 year old pre-university students please let them
  53. know about Google Code-in [9] which is a fun contest introducing the
  54. younger students to open source software. It begins 18 November.
  55.
  56. We rely on you for your help for the success of this program, so thank
  57. you in advance for all the work you do!
