  8.
  9. Birthday
  10.
  11. Team RWBY was just getting ready for bed at the end of a long, tiring week of classes.
  12.
  13. With tomorrow being the weekend, Blake and Yang had made plans to go to Vale, though Ruby and Weiss had no plans in particular.
  14.
  15. Presently, Blake was settling into bed with her book as per usual. Yang was in the bathroom brushing her hair in front of the mirror. Ruby was in there with her, brushing her teeth, scrambling against her sister's side to push her away from the sink so she could spit.
  16.
  17. Weiss was combing through her own hair as she sat in bed, simultaneously flipping through the pages of her planner. She was checking to make sure there weren't any assignments that needed to be done over the weekend, and ended up mumbling out loud to herself out loud.
  18.
  19. "Oh... so it's tomorrow..."
  20.
  21. Yang and Ruby were just emerging from the bathroom to overhear.
  22.
  23. "What's tomorrow?" Yang wondered. She headed for Blake's bed, gave her a quick kiss, then climbed up into her own bunk. Ruby scampered over to kiss Weiss as well.
  24.
  25. "Yeah, what's tomorrow, Weiss?"
  26.
  27. "Nothing," her girlfriend shrugged. "Just my birthday."
  28.
  29. A shocked silence shot through the room. Blake dropped her book.
  30.
  31. "Um... Weiss-?"
  32.
  33. "What the heck do you mean, 'nothing'?" Yang cried. "Your freaking birthday isn't nothing!"
  34.
  35. "Yeah, Weiss!" Ruby yelped. "Your birthday is kind of a big deal! H-How come you didn't say something sooner?! If I'd known, I would've gotten you something!" Ruby threw her arms around her partner desperately.
  36.
  37. But Weiss brushed off her teammates' comments with a shrug.
  38.
  39. "It's not a big deal. My birthday has never been anything special. It doesn't need to be now." She kissed Ruby's cheek to try to reassure her. "You don't need to get me anything. None of you do."
  40.
  41. "B-But-"
  42.
  43. "It's fine. Goodnight."
  44.
  45. Weiss laid herself down in bed and didn't say another word on the matter.
  46.
  47. Ruby, Blake, and Yang all shared dumbfounded looks with one another. But the latter two could see the fire in their leader's eyes; they knew she was going to do something for Weiss' birthday, whether Weiss thought it was necessary or not.
  48.
  49. Confident that they could leave it to her, Blake and Yang went to bed.
  50.
  51. Ruby opted to stay in Weiss' bed with her that night, cuddling her to sleep as she thought of a last-minute plan.
  52.
  53. ---------
  54.
  55. When Ruby woke up the next morning, Blake and Yang had already gone out, and Weiss was still asleep.
  56.
  57. Ruby hadn't been able to plan much last night, but she got to work on Weiss' 'present' right away.
  58.
  59. Ruby turned over slowly so as not to wake her girlfriend, then sidled up to close the distance between them. Weiss had her back to her, and Ruby got started on playing with her hair, since she knew Weiss secretly liked it.
  60.
  61. She listened to Weiss' soft breathing for a few minutes until a little moan told her her girlfriend was awake. Ruby immediately pressed herself close to Weiss' back, wrapping her arms around her stomach and squeezing.
  62.
  63. "Good morning, Weiss! Happy birthday!" Ruby kissed the side of her face as Weiss registered what was happening.
  64.
  65. "Ruby... I told you, you don't need to-"
  66.
  67. "But I wanna!" she whined. "Even if you don't like your birthday, I do! Because it's when you were born! So I wanna celebrate it just a little bit, Weiss. Pleeeease?"
  68.
  69. Weiss let out a sigh, and Ruby felt it go. The heiress turned herself over to face her partner and kissed Ruby's nose.
  70.
  71. "Fine."
  72.
  73. "Yay!" Ruby returned the kiss, then cuddled up closer. "So what do you wanna do today? Whatever you want, we'll do it! Since I didn't get you a real present, I'll do whatever you want today!"
  74.
  75. "Then perhaps..." Weiss was interrupted by a yawn. "Mm, perhaps we could sleep in a while longer."
  76.
  77. "Oooh sure! You need some rest! It was a long week for you."
  78.
  79. Ruby instantly agreed. She eased back a bit so Weiss could move into whatever position was most comfortable for her.
  80.
  81. The heiress curled up on her other side to face Ruby, then reached out to pull her in close. Ruby happily complied, looping her arms around Weiss' back and beginning to pet through her hair all over again.
  82.
  83. Weiss closed her eyes, resting her chin atop her girlfriend's head. Ruby tucked her face beneath the crook of Weiss' neck, until she could hear her heartbeat.
  84.
  85. For a while, she simply laid there as she listened to Weiss fall back asleep.
  86.
  87. Ruby let her rest. She wondered what it must've been like to grow up in a family that didn't even celebrate your birthday.
  88.
  89. In her own life, birthdays had always been a huge deal. She and Yang would always get presents from their father and each other. They'd watch movies and play outside and go to the amusement park or the zoo or the beach. They'd stay up late and eat cake for dinner, then ice cream for dessert.
  90.
  91. But Weiss never got any of that.
  92.
  93. Ruby hated to think that the only thing Weiss ever received on her birthday was perhaps a card from her older sister.
  94.
  95. Of course, that was better than nothing.
  96.
  97. But Ruby couldn't help feeling upset. Weiss deserved so much more than that.
  98.
  99. So she gave her all she could give that morning.
  100.
  101. She let Weiss sleep, then whenever Weiss woke up, Ruby would pepper kisses and compliments all over her face and lips. She told Weiss how much she loved her, as her companion, as her partner, and as her girlfriend.
  102.
  103. As she laid her head against Weiss' chest and listened to her heartbeat, Ruby recounted all the times they'd been through together these past few semesters. There was a lot of "Remember the time we" and "Oh, and then when you" and "OH! And then-!"
  104.
  105. She babbled on and on about all the reasons why she loved Weiss and was happy to be with her.
  106.
  107. And Weiss listened to every word, holding Ruby close to her heart all the while.
  108.
  109. She'd never realized there was so much she'd done together with Ruby since coming to Beacon. She'd never realized there was someone who would be willing to celebrate her this much.
  110.
  111. Ruby went on for hours, until noon when their stomachs started to growl. By the time she heard Weiss' rumbling, Ruby cut off mid-story and pushed herself up.
  112.
  113. "Oh, should we- W-Waah! Weiss, what's wrong! Wh-Why are you crying?!"
  114.
  115. Weiss hadn't realized it herself until Ruby pointed it out now. She turned her face into her shoulder to try and hide it.
  116.
  117. "I'm not... I'm just... I'm so happy, Ruby..."
  118.
  119. Ruby was glad they weren't bad tears. She leaned forward and hugged Weiss again, brushing her wet cheeks with her thumbs.
  120.
  121. "You shouldn't cry on your birthday, Weiss."
  122.
  123. "But I'm happy... you dolt..."
  124.
  125. Ruby giggled softly, then pulled the blankets up over both of their heads. She dipped down for a long, tender kiss. Their chests rose and fell together as their breathing began to synchronize.
  126.
  127. When they pulled apart, Ruby looked longingly down into Weiss' eyes.
  128.
  129. "I'm sorry I can't really do much for you on your birthday, Weiss. This is about it..."
  130.
  131. Weiss shook her head and pulled her in for another hug.
  132.
  133. "Don't be silly. You've done... more than I ever could've asked for, Ruby. I don't need presents or anything like that. Just this is more than enough. Thank you."
  134.
  135. Weiss kissed her hair sweetly. Ruby sighed and nuzzled into her shoulder.
  136.
  137. They laid there for a few more minutes, until more rumbling sounded between them. Ruby sat up and threw the blankets off them, then helped Weiss sit up.
  138.
  139. "Come on, time for breakfast! Er- lunch! Birthday girls get cake and cookies!"
  140.
  141. "I might need some help with that," Weiss smiled.
  142.
  143. Ruby clapped excitedly and kissed her nose.
  144.
  145. "It would be my pleasure!"
  146.
  147. It wasn't a particularly lavish or exciting birthday.
  148.
  149. But Weiss knew it'd be the one she'd never forget.
  150.
  151. ------------
  152.
  153. A/N: I'm still dying to know official birthday dates from RT. It's very important information and I need it.
