  25. Ricktor was born beneath a bad omen, one arm small and disfigured compared to the other. While this arm would eventually grow to be as strong as the other the mark of his birth is still there forming a large bunched section of skin behind his shoulder that travels in a spider web of welts down one arm. When viewed from behind the spiral of welts looks like a snake curled in on itself. Unfortunately his birth killed his mother, an already sickly woman, and sent his father into a downward depressive spiral. His father descended into an life of alcoholism and generally becoming a drain on the community.
  26.
  27. By the age of 4 Ricktor realized something about himself was odd, but did not know what. This is the manifestation of his second curse, Legalistic. He both becomes physically ill when telling a lie, and when breaking a promise. This got him into a lot of trouble with his father, who by this point was a wreck of a man, demanding money of his still child son and cursing the boy for what he had done to his wife. It was around this time that Ricktor both began learning the trade of a criminal and first met Ameiko.
  28.
  29. Ricktor met an old beggar who lived in Sandpoint named Giess, an ancient bald man with only half of his left hand, it having been crushed as punishment for thievery in Korvosa. The relationship between the two was originally parasitic, the old man asking the boy for things he was too old and frail to steal himself. Eventually it turned to a sort of cruel affection, the old beggar teaching the boy the secrets of his trade and putting up towards ever more dangerous tasks. Giess took the boy from the city, and would teach him how to hide and remain quiet, and how to lift objects silently from a pocket or desk.
  30.
  31. This eventually lead to a raid upon the Kaijitsu manor. Ricktor was age 7 at the time, at this point he had realized only some of the limitations and conditions of his curse. While in the branches of a plum tree Ricktor saw Ameiko for the first time, and became infatuated with her. In a moment of carelessness he fell from the tree before her, and the young girl, not understanding that he had been there to steal, spoke to him in a kind manner. As a street child he had not known kindness,In the mind of Ricktor he saw her as an angel, a salvation for himself, something that he must reach towards but not ever touch. As a moth before the flame he became obsessed.
  32.
  33. Ricktor returned to the manor often to meet with Ameiko, bringing her things. He kept this secret from both his father and Giess. By this point his father has become a drunken recluse, satisfied with the money Ricktor brought home. He was unsure why he hid this, but knew if either of them knew their questioning would find out everything. This situation continued in this way until Ricktor was 14 when he made a mistake. Ameiko’s situation had grown worse, and in a moment of weakness Ricktor made a promise to her. He swore to her that he would ensure that she would be happy. This marked Ricktor’s affection and obsession shifting towards something more. He would become violently ill when not working towards his imagined goal of making Ameiko happy. He neglected his lesson with Giess and supplying his father with alcohol. His father began to try and beat him anew, but Ricktor had grown quick and spent less and less time at home. Instead he sought answers to what he was and spent time at churches, reading books, unbeknownst to the church’s priests.
  34.
  35. He came to understand what he was and the ramifications of his promise. At the same time his father grew sick and frail. Ricktor stood torn, his perceptions growing more warped by the day as his mind tugged him towards Ameiko. Eventually he confided in Giess, who by this time had despite his age grown reinvigorated by teaching his protege, and at least seemed to care for the boy. Giess told him to cut his father out entirely, and, showing his hand, told Ricktor that he did not regret what he had done. The only regrets he had were of opportunities not taken.
  36.
  37. It was after this that Ricktor devoted himself to Ameiko. Later his mind would snap under the strain during the events of Burnt Offerings with the death of his father and disappearance of Giess and Ricktor changing to an ideal of to excel one must be pushed, and that happiness is born out of strength, and that Ameiko’s growth is the only thing that matters.
  38.
  39. Other important characters:
  40. Uncles Rewilh Harparr and Hony Harparr. Both of them work as members of a mercenary company named The Ash Eaters. Mother’s twin brothers. Ricktor only met then a few times, none of those times were they in a position to take care of the young boy.
  41.
  42. Derris, fellow poor man’s child who Ricktor held as one of his few friends and companions. Though due to Ricktor’s condition he was forced to keep Derris at arm’s length.
  43.
  44. Hadrian Maar, a priest who discovered him in the attic reading books. The priest did not turn him in and asked if he would use the front door next time, and if he did Hardian would let him into the loft to read. Hadrian would occasionally feed Ricktor, but Ricktor kept him at arms length so as to ensure he did not find out too much about his situation.
