Welcome to Baldur's Gate, a veritable nest of rats and vipers clinging to the rocky slopes overlooking the Chionthar River. From their high perches in the Upper City, the local nobles-known as patriars-gaze down with veiled contempt upon the common rabble in the grimy Lower City, which hugs the foggy harbor. The whole of Baldur's Gate reeks of blood. crime, and opportunity. One can easily fathom why pirates and traders are drawn to this place like flies to a carcass.
Following the river farther east would eventually lead you to Elturel, capital of the holy land of Elturgard-or
at least that was the case until a few days ago. The flood of refugees from Elturel has gotten worse since news first arrived that the city has fallen. Everyone is saying Baldur's Gate is next, but no one truly knows who or what has claimed Elturel.
The patriars pay a mercenary army called the Flaming Fist to protect their interests in Baldur's Gate, and by extension, the city itself. The Flaming Fist has gained even more power since their charismatic leader, Ulder Ravengard, claimed the title of Grand Duke a few years ago. Apparently, Ravengard is missing. In his absence, the Flaming Fist has sealed the city's gates to staunch the flow of refugees. No one is allowed in or out.
All of this was brought to your attention shortly after you were drafted by the Flaming Fist to help defend the
city. Your orders are to speak to Captain Zodge at the Basilisk Gate, which pierces the city's eastern wall and takes its name from the various statues that rest in its niches and perch atop its battlements. Unseen beyond the sealed Basilisk Gate, a dirt road stretches through the Outer City slums to the bridge known as Wyrm's Crossing, then to distant realms beyond.
Dozens of Flaming Fist soldiers are trying to control an angry mob of commoners eager to leave the city. Armed with only a vague description of Captain Zodge-a tall man with long black hair and a leather eye patch-it takes you a while to find him. A fight breaks out between soldiers and commoners, and you finally spot the one-eyed captain as he wades into the fray and begins throwing punches. Just another day in the City of Blood.
Sol — Today at 9:17 PM
No one is arrested during the fracas but several commoners are beaten unconscious, robbed of their money pouches and dumped unceremoniously into alleyways and gutters.

"You're the captain? Zodge, is it?" Tharivol says, stepping forward.
Sol — Today at 9:20 PM
The remainder of the refugees shrink back from the soldiers, leaving a few individuals in between the two groups.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 9:21 PM
Kovgan, struggling to see through the crowd due to his height, makes his way towards what he believed to glance as the captain.
"We hear you might need some assistance." Kovgan says with a flourish.
Kiryuu Yamashiro — Today at 9:22 PM
Kiryuu finishes picking a tooth from his knuckles as he rejoins the Captain, a pouch of coin bouncing in his hand. The half-Oni stretches his neck from side to side as he glares out at the crowd of civilians.

Aelar is unsure of all this but makes his way over to where this captain is at.

Fogerty follows behind Tharivol.
Sol — Today at 9:23 PM
The one-eyed Captain turns towards the speaker and eyes him up and down. "So you're the new conscripts. Well follow me away from this rabble." He jerks a thumb towards the crowd and then leads you all into an alley a short distance away from where the commotion occurred.
Heat Stones — Today at 9:23 PM
Gundz sighs at the sight of beaten commoners. She makes her way to the Captain.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 9:24 PM
Following the captain, "Things must be bad to see some of the population in near open revolt."

"Refugees. Desperate," Tharivols says glancing back.
Sol — Today at 9:24 PM
"The refugee crisis," says Captain Zodge, "has stoked fears that Baldur's Gate might suffer the same fate as Elturel, of which nothing remains but a hole in the ground, apparently. Our grand duke, Ulder Ravengard, was visiting Elturel on a diplomatic mission when the city was destroyed. Coincidence? I think not.
"The knights of Elturgard call themselves Hellriders. Afew of them escaped the destruction and think we're somehow to blame for Elturel's downfall. What a bunch of self-righteous rabble-rousers! We're arresting them on sight, but that's left us shorthanded to deal with another problem. For that, I need your help.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 9:27 PM
"Ravengard and his men demand respect but turning a city into a crater seems a stretch no?."

Kiryuu remains silent as he watches the conscripts hovering behind Zodge, ever the Captain's shadow. Quirking an eyebrow at the comment of Kovgan Mox.

Zodge draws a small stack of copper badges from his belt. "Of course Duke Ravengard didn't turn that place into a crater. They just want someone to blame."
Tharivol Amberwood — Today at 9:29 PM
"Captain, I sympathize with the need for order to be maintained where the common masses are unable to control their baser impulses. However, the terms of this conscription remain unclear to me."

Aelar listens for the most part, the captain being at least one of the people he recognizes from his dreams.

The captain looks directly at the half-elf noble with his one good eye. "I'm empowered to draft capable individuals in times of emergency. This is one such situation. I can always have you executed for refusing, but I'd prefer you just agree to help."

"Threats are unnecessary, Captain. As a guest of the city, I am more than willing to assist, but my station will be respected even in service."

Kovgan states, "The alliance is obliviously happy to help Baldur's Gate" before chuckling with a klak "but I'll assume the threat of execution is reserved for the others here."
Sol — Today at 9:35 PM
He glances around at the other conscripts. "You'll be compensated, and there is no disrespect. Just a statement of facts. Now if there are no other questions we'll get to the assignment."

"Baldur's Gate has long been plagued by followers of the Dead Three-the gods Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul. I thought we had wiped them out, but apparently not. These purveyors of fear and death are taking advantage of the current crisis to commit murder sprees throughout the city. As my appointed deputies in this matter, you'll have license to kill these wretches on sight. Find their lair, and wipe it out. Eliminate anyone who gets in your way, and don't worry about collateral damage.

worth considerably more. "A few blocks from the Basilisk Gate is Elfsong Tavern. A spy named Tarina hangs out there, gathering rumors for the Guild. She owes me a favor, so tell her you work for me. Ask her what she knows about the Dead Three. And, for the love of Bailuran, be nice. Tarina has dangerous friends."

"Oh and before I forget take these badges, they'll give you license to act in my name. I'll also be sending one of my men along with you, just to keep you on task. Kiryuu, you're babysitting the conscripts. Try not to let them all be killed."
Kiryuu Yamashiro — Today at 9:42 PM
"Of course, sir." The large blue-skinned humanoid nods in respect to his commanding officer. "Shall I leave the standard with Oliver during this?"
Despite his size and appearance he speaks common well, though he says the words a little slower than normal.

Kovgan takes a badge, replacing the emblem of the lords he was wearing, a meagre attempt to disassociate his actions from The Alliance.

"That's fine Kiryuu." Captain Zodge gestures and a thick necked man steps out of formation and takes the standard from the half-oni.

"Very well." He hands it off to the man before turning to his new companions. "Whenever you're ready I'll lead you to the tavern."

"Mind your purse, and keep your sword arms ready." Is all he says before he salutes Captain Zodge, beating his fist to his mail shirt before turning and beginning their trek to the tavern.

Once free of the masses surrounding the gate, travel is relatively quick and most passerby give the foreigners and the flaming fist uniform a wide berth. Before long you find yourselves standing in front of a two-story wood and stone tavern. The idyllic image is completed by the drunk heaving a puddle onto the stones near the door.

"Vigilance." He warns. "If you somehow get into trouble, there is only us to deal with it." He smirks, as if to say he's pondering on whether he would help as well. He side-steps the vomit puddle newly made before he pushes the door to the tavern open, having to duck a bit to get through, expecting the others to follow him in.

Kovgan raises his snout at the sight, and as the drunk finishes, makes a slight flourish of his hand and a smaller mutter to clean up the mess the individual made.

Kovgan stays in the middle of the group, aware he has to rely on them in crowds.

Fogerty approaches covering the rear.

A low, disembodied, feminine voice greets the group as the door swings open to allow you entrance. The patrons are silent for a few more moments, only resuming their conversation once the voice is finished with it's song. Flanking the door is an empty suit of plate armor, leaning casually against the wall, and a large female half-ogre, clearly the muscle of the establishment.
The patrons all seem to be engrossed in their own conversations and hardly look up as you make your entrance, save for a few who grumble as they lay sight on the half-oni's uniform.

Trots forward slightly towards Kiryuu, "What makes you so disliked eh, pardon my unfamiliarity, is the situation at the gate frequent?"
Sol — Today at 10:09 PM
A burly man tends bar while two young men weave between the tables and private booths, taking orders, delivering drinks and food and joking with the clientele. Three padded chairs are angled toward a fireplace on the east wall, underneath the creaky wooden staircase that climbs to the second floor. Some drunk is passed out on the couch against the north wall. Next to the couch sits a wooden sea chest that contains an assortment of games.
Kiryuu Yamashiro — Today at 10:11 PM
"Klank, Skoona." He nods to the door muscle as he takes in the tavern. He turns to Kovgan. "Plenty of folk...don't care much for the Flaming Fists keeping the peace, tiny one. It's the uniform." He pulls on the sash that covers a portion of his chest from shoulder to hip, there in the middle is the crest of the Blazing Fists emblazoned in red. Those looking closely enough would come to realize it was the tabard all the other mercs wore. Apparently they were not made to fit his large frame.
Fogerty Creedence — Today at 10:12 PM
"I see I'm not the only one who has trouble with clothing." Pointing towards his wing.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 10:13 PM
Kovgan tilts his head slightly, taking in the tabard's insignia properly for the first time before nodding, his eyes then drift past and notice a few of the games that are out, curious to see if he recognises any.
Sol — Today at 10:15 PM
Klank doesn't respond to the greeting but Skoona gives you a hard look and grunts in your direction. The message is clear, don't start trouble.

"Unless any of you...have a better idea I'll have a word with the barkeep. He....might know where we can find our....'friend.'

Zoning back in to Kiryuu's words, "Its no big thing but the name is Kovgan Mox so I'd prefer little to tiny, its a closer translation in common."

"Kiryuu is my name." He pauses as everyone starts to speak in a tongue he does not understand. "So. Any other...suggestions?"

"Keep an eye out, birdwings. We're looking for a woman of some description. Likely has a certain air about her."

[Draconic] "Didn't choose it but I quite like it." Kovgan says cheerfully looking at Tharivol, [Common] "You know this place best think we'll follow your lead, will happily accompany you though Kiryuu." Kovgan steps ahead of him towards the bar.
"What drink would you recommend from here anyways?"

"Right. I'll have a chat...while you keep an eye out." Kiryuu moves forward, between the various tables approaching the bar and the man working it. "The ale is fine...I know not what else they serve as drinks. I think tea?" He honestly doesn't recall.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 10:30 PM
As Kiryuu stands at the bar Kovgan clambers onto a stool next to him, deciding to stand ontop of it rather than sitting and being only slightly shorter than Kiryuu for the first time.

"Evening mister Alyth." He greets the bartender. "An ale...if you please." He makes the order, standing at the bar, his new companion standing on the stool next to him.

"A wine if you have it, otherwise I'll also take an ale."

The barkeep's eyes flash recognition as the blue skinned mercenary steps up to the bar. "Sure thing mister Kire-yah." Despite his familiarity with the half-oni he still struggles with the foreign sounding name. He pours an ale, and pushes it onto the bar so that it is in reach.
He glances towards the small creature standing atop one of his barstools. "Wine? I've got some elverquisst if that'll suit you."

"If you don't mind my asking what is the vintage?"

"Thanks." The large half-Oni guzzles grasps the tankard and guzzles half it's contents before setting it back on the bar. "You know of a Tarina hanging....around, mister Alyth? I've got orders to have...a chat with her. Flaming Fist business." He pulls 5gp from some of his recent 'earnings' and slides it across to the bar.

The tavern owner/barkeep nods and turns, pulling a fine bottle from the shelf and pours a generous glass for the kobold. "1483, Year of the Tasked Weasel, one of the best vintages in the city aside from the Duke's personal stock I'd say."

Kovgan reaches into one of his many pockets and pulls out a small stack of silver, glancing at the barkeep to wait for a specific price to be announced.

Tharivol nudges Fogerty to keep focus, looking for anyone who may fit the broad profile of the Captain's informant.

Alan nods again and slides the coins off of the bar and into his pocket. "Aye...Tarina....she's likely playing a game of Baldur's Bones in the upstairs dining room."

Kiryuu quaffs the last of his ale, wiping his mouth with the back of his arm. "Good. Another ale, mister Alyth, and thank you...for the info."

Kovgan places them down and takes a small sip, wrapping both clawed hands around the glass.

Gundz says in a hushed tone "The people in the tavern don't take too kindly to us nor the other refugees."
"Though the only thing I have seen that was 'suspicious'. There was a cloaked person who swiftly disappeared upstairs without a word. Well, aside from 'wet' footsteps."

Kovgan waits for Kiryuu to receive his second ale before climbing down from his stool and then reaching up to the bar to grab his beverage.

Once Kiryuu receives his second drink he finishes it in one full draining gulp and sets the empty tankard back on the bar. The Half-Oni will rejoin the others and explain to them where Tarina is. "Shall we head...upstairs?"

"Simply being polite, Noble one." He turns to the stairs and tromps up them.

The second story of the tavern provides a different atmosphere than the first, lit lanterns hang from the rafters in this windowless room. Rugs cover the wooden floor and help dampen the noise from drunken patrons gathered around two large tables, eating, drinking and playing games of Baldur's Bones. One of the individuals seated at the table farthest from the stairs is likely Tarina, based on the rough description you have of her.
Kiryuu Yamashiro — Today at 11:17 PM
As Kiryuu finishes climbing the stairs to the second floor he looks around it doesn't take long to locate the likely candidate for Tarina. The half-Oni heads to the table, standing behind some of the players across from the woman, expecting his party of conscripts to be behind him. "Pardon...my intrusion. Are you Tarina?" He asks the woman, looking to her directly, his face neutral and his tone relaxed.

Kovgan follows Kiryuu sipping at his drink as he looks around the room, curious about the dice game being played on the tables above him.

Aelar makes his way up stairs as well.

The short-haired brunette scoops up her winnings with a raucous laugh and glances up at the mercenary. "Aye that's me! Let me guess....ol' Zodge's puppy dog? Eh?" Her gambling companions laugh and pound the table at her joke.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 11:27 PM
Learning that this is the correct table Kovgan once again pulls himself onto a stool to be seen.
Kovgan, figuring that Kiryuu can handle the information gathering, and sensing that it would be prefered for the others to be distracted decides to ask some of Tarina's companions about the rules of Baldur's Bones.
Kiryuu Yamashiro — Today at 11:32 PM
"I would not call myself...that. But yes, Captain Zodge wishes to...cash-in his favor. He needs all the info you have...on..." He stops talking and clears his throat. "Would you mind if we talked more privately, Miss Tarina?"
Kovgan Mox — Today at 11:34 PM
"As you might tell I'm clearly an outsider..." Kovgan klaks, in the meantime.
Sol — Today at 11:34 PM
Several of the drunken patrons start loudly explaining the rules, however they are slurred, out of order, or generally unintelligible.
Tarina raises an eyebrow and cracks a grin at the awkward mercenary before opening her mouth to speak.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 11:37 PM
Kovgan struggles to make sense the of the variety of slurred conflicting information he is hearing.

A mere moment before she can respond the tavern is filled with the voice of an elvish woman singing. Much like when you entered the establishment all conversation stops, even the most rowdy of patrons fall silent for the disembodied singer.

Once the voice fades the conversation doesn't immediately resume, the patrons stare at each other semi-bewildered.

"Lets say it seems oddly topical from what we've heard and know of Elturel"

"An anthem. A call to arms, perhaps."

The conversation gradually resumes, though it is slow to do so and Tarina shakes herself while eyeing the mercenary once again.
"Now then. The favor. Yeah look I'm happy to help with whatever the ol' Captain wants, but you've got to do something for me first. A favor for a favor for a favor as it is."

Kiryuu furrows his brow, not at all liking where she's going with this, but he has his orders. "Very well, miss Tarina. What...favor do you wish?" The blue half-Oni folds his arms.

"I think I'll just watch for now eh lads." Kovgan says before focusing his attention on Tarina's words.

"Pretty simple, sit and enjoy a drink or two...then when these pirates show up...kill them all. Real easy."
Kiryuu Yamashiro — Yesterday at 11:51 PM
"Ah. My favorite...kind of favor. And will you...be buying the rounds?" He smirks.
Kovgan Mox — Yesterday at 11:52 PM
Kovgan interjects from over Kiryuu's shoulder. "Sorry can I be a little difficult and ask exactly who these 'pirates' are."
Tharivol Amberwood — Yesterday at 11:52 PM
Tharivold maintains his posture, though his attention has clearly focused on Tarina.

Aelar attention now shifts to Tarina.

"You can buy your own rounds soldier boy, as for who they are...they're the crew of the Uncivil Serpent....right nasty bastards."
At the sounds of the ship name several nearby patrons spew and splutter ale.
Others make warding signs and clutch religious icons, muttering prayers under their breath.

"Please do not...misunderstand." Kiryuu looks to Tarina and then to Tharivol. "I never said they would not...taste my steel." He grins, showing off many regular and pointed teeth. "I was...merely curious." The comment about the conscript being his boss slides off Kiryuu, remembering to play nice with the spy.

A smile returns to the woman's face. "That's good news! Well grab a seat and order an ale, I'm sure they'll turn up eventually! You can also join in for a round or two of Baldur's Bones if ya want to lose your gold!" She cackles and immediately begins pressuring the tables other occupants to ante up.

Kovgan decides to sit down at this stage, snout barely remaining above the table. He decides watching is his best course of action, having failed to grasp the rules earlier.

Kiryuu takes a seat and when one servers comes by orders another ale. "I prefer cards." He says simply.

She smiles widely, this was clearly the preferred outcome. "A shrewd head on your shoulders sellsword!" She turns back to the game and starts the round.

Tharivol loosens the pepperbox holster once sitting, using his clothing to conceal the weapon's readiness.

A few hours pass in the warm upstairs dining room. Patrons come and go, some deigning to do neither and end up drooling onto a sofa cushion or the hard wooden floors as the ale overtakes them. During this time Tarina has won 36 out of 43 rounds of Baldur's Bones. Her opponents grumble but continue to engage her in the game.

A loud, angry voice is heard from downstairs. The majority of what is said is lost amongst the conversation but you do hear the voice offering a tall glass of ale for information.

The half-Oni moves his shield so it rests against the leg of the table, for ease of reach and loosens his sword from the scabbard for an easy draw. He looks to the conscripts, making sure they're ready.

Kovgan makes ready to move, but continues facing away from the stairs, waiting to hear commotion behind or for a sign from Kiryuu.

A few minutes pass before you hear boots thumping up the stairs. Fifteen or so humans fan out from the stairway, grouping on the other side of the table closest to the stairs, led by an ugly, foul smelling man with a cataract-clouded right eye. "Alright Tarina! Come on out! One of your little bar-rat friends sold you out!"

A sudden crack from under the table, and a projectile strikes the wall behind the pirates.
Aelar Liadon — Today at 1:13 AM
Aelar reacting quickly to the situation cast entanglement to catch as much of the group of pirates as possible before moving back away.

One of the corsairs tries to impale Aelar as he moves away from the table.
Fogerty Creedence — Today at 1:21 AM
Fogerty moves in and and immediately starts slashing at the nearest pirate and kills him in a flurry of claws and talons.
Sol — Today at 1:25 AM
A corsair fights his way through the entangling vines that sprout from the tavern floor, only to swing his cutlass wide and miss the orc shaman completely.
Seeing his comrades struggle the nearby pikeman takes advantage of the distracted spiritualist and stabs him in the midriff.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 1:27 AM
Kovgan darts forward, stabbing one of the pikemen and shrouding him in a strange energy before darting back just as quickly. Once he finds a new position energy can be seen surrounding his weapon.
Sol — Today at 1:30 AM
One of the gunners breaks free of the vines, moving to line up a spreadshot on the patrons and conscripts, only to be knocked to the ground by the avian.
He rolls  over and tries to catch the bird-like humanoid in the barrage but he pulls the trigger too soon and shreds the cushions of the nearby couch.
Another of the corsairs break free and charge at the lone orc barring their captains path. Swinging his bar mace as he moves his accuracy isn't what it would be and smashes a divot into the floorboards at the shaman's feet.
Dead-Eye unlimbers his greatsword and pushes through his men before swinging wildly at the noble who opened fire scoring a nasty slash along the half-elf's chest.
The other corsair gunner breaks free of the clusterfuck near the stairs and peppers the patrons with scattershot, several of the balls narrowly missing the small kobold.
Kiryuu Yamashiro — Today at 1:44 AM
Kiryuu moves across the table and joins the fray just behind his Orc companion, whilst moving forward, great Dao and shield in either hand he works himself into a bloody rage, eyes filling with red. Perhaps because of how quickly he entered combat his swing at the Pirate Captain misses, instead breaking the chair next to him.
Sol — Today at 1:45 AM
A corsair wielding a greataxe rushes free of the vines and closes with the avian martial artist, attempting a powerful overhand swing but missing entirely.
Heat Stones — Today at 1:49 AM
Gundz disengages from their opponent and moves to the back of the room.
Sol — Today at 1:50 AM
An officer plants his feet and draws his handcannon, firing at the avian. His fear of hitting a crewmate causes his aim to waver and he misses.
Tharivol Amberwood — Today at 2:06 AM
Tharivol moves back, holstering the pepperbox, to finally raise his arquebus at the pirate filth before him. The 6-foot weapon flashes and barks, sending a large lead round at the lowlife going by "Dead-Eye".
Sol — Today at 2:07 AM
With a shout another of the pirates charges the mercenary oni with a large hammer, swinging it from the side, only for it to clang and reverberate off of the skirmish shield.
One of the patrons has his throat mercilessly cut by one of Dead-Eyes men.
Several of the corsairs continue to struggle against the vines.
Aelar Liadon — Today at 2:15 AM
Draws his Longbow and fires it into one of the closest Pirates near to him.
Fogerty Creedence — Today at 2:20 AM
Fogerty uses his ki to summon his astral arms inflicting damage in a 10 foot radius and attacks the bloodletter.
Sol — Today at 2:25 AM
A corsair moves around the side of the mercenary and slashes him with his cutlass.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 2:26 AM
Pushing forward once more Kovgan throws an Ice knife at one of the assailants, although the first target absorbs most of the burst, he then makes two thrusts towards the Captain but he dodges both.
Sol — Today at 2:27 AM
The entangled pikeman spears the oni with his long reaching boarding pike.
The prone gunner clambers to his feet and ducks the taloned kick, free from his assailant the gunner turns his weapon on the vulnerable backline.
Click. The blunderbuss jams and the corsair yells a curse and tries to empty the barrel.
The skirmish shield once more saves the oni from having his skull bashed in as it turns the mace aside.
Dead-Eye steps down off the table and begins cutting down patrons with wild abandon.
Kiryuu Yamashiro — Today at 2:35 AM
The reaver is quite slippery as he just barely moves out of the way of another swipe of Kiryuu's mighty blade, smashing a floorboard into splinters.
Sol — Today at 2:35 AM
One of the corsair gunners moves up in line with his twin and reloads his blunderbuss.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 2:36 AM
The distraction caused by Kiryuu and the blind abandon with which he cuts down the patrons gives Kovgan an opportunity to strike a deep blow to his armpit.
Tharivol Amberwood — Today at 2:44 AM
Tharivol takes a knee, focusing his aim on the pirate leader once more. Another blinding flash is followed by yet another deafening report from the firearm's muzzle, striking the pirate on the flank.
Kiryuu Yamashiro — Today at 2:45 AM
With a growl and a flourish, Kiryuu brings his Dao down, the heavy blade cleaving down into the Corsair's head. With a grunt he kicks the corpse off of his sword and swings around to the next target.
Sol — Today at 2:46 AM
The bloodletter swings his axe in hard towards the martial artist.
Fogerty Creedence — Today at 2:46 AM
Fogerty deflects some of the damage by redirecting the blow.

Seeing the monk is distracted by one of his crewmates the duelist capitalizes on the moment and sends several quick stabs at his back.

Breaking free of the vines the corsair officer steps up onto the table and cracks off a shot at the kobold.

"Appreciated, healer," Tharivol says looking back with a nod.

Another of the corsairs slash at the mercenary, the numerous cuts and bruises not slowing him at all.
Kovgan Mox — Today at 2:55 AM
Kovgan finally takes a hit and crumples to the floor as a Handcannon shot hits the crown of his head.

Aelar fires again at the the same pirate killing him before quickly moving up to the kobold healing them with a healing potion.
