  1. MON-FRI: 8AM-4:30PM
  2.
  3. “Shit!” Johnny said under his breath, grabbing his phone and checking the time. He was relieved to see that it was only 4:02. He looked inside the glass wall of the BMV and didn’t see any customers in the waiting area, all the seats were empty and only two young female workers were casually talking behind the counter. He double checked the time, it was before 4:30 and it was a weekday; so they must be open. Those were the rules. He opened a door and walked in.
  4. The girls behind the main counter were laughing at some unknown joke but when Johnny walked in, they froze and their faces became somber. They looked at each other, psychically questioning what they should do. A consensus was reached by both, instantly, and they scurried off into the confused maze of desks and computers behind the front counter.
  5. Confused, Johnny looked up at a red lettered, “NOW SERVING,” sign but it wasn’t turned on. He stood for almost a minute looking around, alone. He was about to call out, “Hello?” when an older lady in her forties, wearing a white sweater, appeared behind the counter. She gave him an almost solemn and apologetic smile, along with that tilt of the head that always tells that bad news is about to come.
  6. “Hi...” she said, drawing the greeting out. “Sorry, but we're closed down. Everything is locked.”
  7. “Oh!” Johnny said. “You close at 4:30?”
  8. She nodded and smiled, congratulating him on stating something true. “Yes, that’s right, we do.”
  9. “Ok, but,” Johnny looked at the clock on the wall, “It's 4:03.”
  10. “Right, right,” she continued nodding. “We have to be out of here, closed down, at 4:30.”
  11. “Well, it says 'business hours',” Johnny said, waving his hand at the painted hours on the glass door.
  12. Her nodding turned sympathetic, her smile becoming an almost mournful frown. “Yeah, we have to shut everything down at 4:15, we have to be out of here at 4:30.”
  13. Johnny's eyebrows lowered. “Ok, right, but its 4:03.”
  14. Her frown became more solemn, as if Johnny hadn’t noticed it at first and she needed to lay it on thicker. “I'm sorry, everything is locked down, we can’t help you; you'll have to come back at 8:30 tomorrow.”
  15. Johnny did a double take to the door. “It says 8:00 there!”
  16. “I'm sorry, but everything is locked down now,” she repeated.
  17. “The doors aren’t locked!” Johnny's voice rose.
  18. “Yeah,” she nodded. “I'm sorry though.”
  19. “Ok, listen,” Johnny said, lowering his voice, trying to calm himself and rationalize the situation. “What time do you close?”
  20. “We close at 4:30, sir.”
  21. Johnny let out a frustrated grunt. “If you close at 4:30, then why are we even talking about this? It's 4:04!”
  22. She held up her hand reassuringly, as if to telekinetically sooth his mind. “Sir, we have to have everything locked down by 4:15.”
  23. “Okay, fine,” Johnny said. “But it's 4:04!”
  24. She only nodded apologetically at him.
  25. “Ok listen, What-Time-Do-You-Close?” Johnny slowly said each word.
  26. “We close at 4:30, sir.”
  27. “Goddammit lady!” Johnny threw his arms up in frustration, turned and ripped the door open, storming out.
