rose finally getting the chance to meet john in washington and stay with him for a little while, slowly saving up money to meet the boy shes known online for so long only for her mom to practically whirl her out the door in a pile of travel money because she knows how close she and john are, and dad being more than happy to accommodate her after seeing how much john talks about her and spends time with her online

they finally meet and shes expecting him to just sweep her up and hug the shit out of her (and she wanted him to, to be able to ignore her facade where nobody else could) but he doesn’t, and even as they spend more time together he’s always just sort of keeping himself at arms length, and hes still cheerful and energetic and overjoyed to be around her and she very quickly adapts to a household of pranksters but whenever things seem like they’re going to get more intimate he always gets super sheepish and apologetic and “no no its fine haha really its not its ok seriously rose”

and it quickly becomes obvious to her that underneath all the enthusiasm about movies and games and all the jokes and effort he goes through to make her laugh (and he succeeds and its the best sort of embarrassing to her) and just how boisterous and fun he is that he’s really super insecure about himself and his body, always making sure she isn’t around when he changes, and shying away and laughing awkward and changing the topic whenever they brush up against each other (and theres so much of him to brush up against and she’ll never not adore it), and picking at his meals at dinner and skimping on dessert, and she can tell by the way dad’s brow furrows that it isn’t normal for john to be such a light eater but he doesn’t want to confront him about it in front of rose and embarrass him

she takes it on herself to talk to him about it and one night they’re in his room together and he hadn’t eaten much of anything at dinner despite how much dad enjoys cooking (and it’s no wonder john’s such a big boy), and she just sits next to him and isn’t really sure about how to handle it delicately so she just teases him a little bit, tells him he doesn’t need to worry so much about how he acts in front of her and that she’s only expecting him to be himself (and all she wants is him, no matter how much john there is it’s still john), and he tenses up and wrings his hands and he’s just all “haha well i mean yeah i guess but you know it’s just” and tries for a few moments to get the words out (and it hurts to see him so conflicted and upset at himself)

eventually he tells her he’s probably at the point where he really should be cutting down on food in general, and when she asks if it’s for her he just pauses and swallows and she knows right then and there that she isn’t going to stand for this, just scoots a little closer to him and looks up at him and tells him that he doesn’t have to change, that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with him or how he looks or his size and that she isn’t going to change her opinion because of any of it (and she wants to say that she’ll love him no matter how big he is but she still can’t get that much out)

and he’s blushing and squirming a bit and trying to play it down but he knows she knows he knows and she just tells him that if he wants to, that she isn’t going to make the choice for him but if he wants to try to take whatever it is they have any further, that he should just give himself the chance to let him have her (because she definitely wants him to have her), and it takes a bit before he nods and slowly lets himself wrap an arm around her (and he’s definitely as good at hugging as she had thought he’d be)

and from that night on she does absolutely everything in her power to make him realize just how much she loves him and all of him and any of him, just starting with small things like taking his hand whenever she gets the chance, resting her hand on his thick thigh when they’re at the dinner table and he looks like he’s faltering about eating in front of her, letting herself laugh louder at his jokes and pranks and in turn pay silliness unto silliness (and it’s hard for her to cut loose even a little but it’s easier to do it for john)

eventually he opens up more to her and they’re actually be able to hug and cuddle a bit, they’ll be watching a movie together and she’ll push closer to him as it goes on, and when he finally gets the courage to pull her against him she drapes herself over his wide torso and wraps an arm around him and dozes against his side and when she feels his hand slowly reaching around her smaller frame and rubs little circles in his tummy to coax him into exploring more of her (and it’s so good, he never realized how amazing he is with his hands, firm and gentle and he didn’t think he deserved to be touching her at first)

it’s a few weeks into her stay before either of them reach the point where they’re ready to expose themselves more (and she knows her mother was always planning to keep her there for so long, she was only supposed to stay a week, but john tells her that a mother always does what’s best for her children and hearing it from him she can accept it), and it’s late at night when he finds her in his room in a nightgown that’s too short and too clingy and he can see the faintest traces of her bra and panties beneath it and she’s very clearly got her mother’s legs because wow

under her usual smirk she’s blushing and timid but she knows they’re both ready for this and the first step is the hardest, and john himself goes red in the face at the sight (and she’ll never get over his chubby cheeks beneath those crystalline eyes) but sits with her anyway, trying not to stare at her too much and eventually asking her what’s up, and she tells him she’s just more comfortable around him and that if he doesn’t want it she’s more than willing to throw something warmer on

a few minutes later and they’re back into the routine they’ve fallen into so many times before, rose leaning against him and hugging him and john rubbing one hand against her back, and she doesn’t want to push him or try to move on him but she knows if she never asks they’ll never get anywhere, so she just sort of gently slides her hand over his stomach and plays with the hem of his top a bit, and when he cracks a joke about having a dark seductress in his bedroom she lets herself giggle and hms a bit and asks if there’s a problem with her getting a bit frisky

and while he does blush and tense up a little he finds it in him to keep going and fire back at her little game of words (and there it is, the john she had missed whenever they came this close to intimacy before), but she’s already in her underwear and he’s a little giddy and eager and before she can remind him what she said before about giving himself a chance he’s already tugging his top off

they spend the rest of the night just cuddling and exploring each other, and the grin on his face is trying so hard to be confident and cocky but he’s too tight and too forced and she knows it’s hard for him, but finally being able to see him bare and feel him and just be so close to him in turns means that for once in her life rose can finally swallow her snark and sarcasm and onion-layers of words and defensiveness and let herself be open and sincere to him about how much she loves him, squeezing him gently and pressing as close to him as she can

even though she trips on her tongue once or twice just from how engrossed she is in her own infatuation it’s worth it to see the way his smile becomes the sort of dimpled honest smile that had always defrosted her, and when she finds her faculties and manages to take her own gown off he finally returns the favor, him topless and her in her underwear and both of them just touching and nuzzling and kissing and embracing the other, and it’s awkward and sloppy and they’re both nervous and jittery but they wouldn’t have it any other way

both of them end up sleeping in the next day and by the time they wake up dad’s already left for work, but there’s a cake on the countertop congratulating john on taking his relationship with miss lalonde to the next level, and he throws a fit about it and she laughs and he laughs

they both end up having cake for breakfast like reasonable teenagers, and they go through the entire thing together and even though rose is about to burst by the end of it seeing john happy and full and with icing on his lips is just so worth it (and if being satisfied and cakey makes him so kissable and snuggable then it looks like shes going to have to learn to bake)
