  1. Matías was born into one of the noble houses of the Castellonian Empire, a minor house but a landed house all the same. As such he was afforded all of the privileges that came with the station, a good education, knowledge of warfare and training in the martial arts of Meridia. But Matías had a dream, a dream that extended beyond the lands of familiar Meridia. He wanted to explore the world, to learn its secrets and ply its darkest corners. He set himself to work learning the trade of the mariner, of both the common sailor and navigator alike, the captain and the quartermaster. He spent years learning this, much to the chagrin of his father, in order to accomplish his dream if the opportunity presented itself, to journey across the great sea and reach the orient. Luckily for Matías such as opportunity arose when a man by the name of Emmeric decided to sail across the sea to find a direct path to the Orient. Seeing an opportunity, and because of his station, he levied his support behind Emmeric, having since become the head of his house. Matías levied all he owned to give credibility to Emmeric, and with some luck the King of Castellonian granted his considerable resources to the expedition. As part of his reward for his initial support of the project, along with his noble status and expertise, Matías was given captaincy of one of the ships sailing to the new world, the ''Santisima'' ''Madre''. As they journeyed across the Great Ocean, they were beset by terrible storms, and of the 4 ships that departed from the ports of Castellon, only the 3 remembered to history landed in the New world, and the ''Santisima'' ''Madre'' was lost, forgotten to time and not-spoken, for the storm that took her was so fierce that the men who lived through it thought the Darkness itself had created the storm. They were not entirely wrong. The Dark Gods of the new world, intrigued at the boats approaching their shores, had taken one of the ships from the fleet for their own purposes, and in their dark ways had experimented upon the new playthings that had made their way to their shores. For decades the crew of the ''Santisima'' ''Madre'' was twisted and tortured at the hands of the Dark Gods and their priests in the midnight city of Necuametl, magics prolonging their lives and maintaining their youth, the Gods of the new world not willing to experiment upon flawed subjects. It was only through the unintended grace of a particularly large fleet of Tarawak raiders that saw some of the men go free, the ferocity of the Orcs in their attack on the city providing the opportunity for an escape. Lead by Matías, the few remaining men still sane enough to want to escape overpowered the few guards posted to keep watch over them. The Men ran, taking a few Ixtlan beastmen present with them, and headed for the Harbor of the port city. A few were lost to Azlatics and Tarawaks, but the majority of the group managed to make it to the flaming harbor, what wooden structures present having been set alight by the viscous Tarawaks. Commandeering a recently captured Tortuguese frigate, the party departed the city as the sounds of Tarawak war cries were slowly being overshadowed by the flapping of wings, and the sky darkened overhead. Sailing northeast towards what Matías presumed would be Castellonian territory, they arrived first in the port of Dead Man's Anchor, and as they flew no colors, were granted safe harbor. Pirates were a diverse bunch, so they did not question the very odd and hungry looking and composed crew, and no sooner after they had berthed did Matías demand to speak to the head of the colony to report what had happened to the ‘'Santisima'' ''Madre'', imagining it had only been a few years since his ship was lost. The pirates present had no idea what the man was talking about and informed him of such. He asked what had happened of the Emmerican expedition then, and after the initial shock, was informed that San Emmeric had arrived in the New World with his 3 ships over 50 years ago. Bewildered, Matías corrected them that 4 ships had been in the expedition, only to be met with increasingly worried and strange looks. "The man's off his rocker." A voice would say "Must’ve caught the scurvy” another. Quickly beginning to understand what exactly had occurred, the realization that everyone and everything Matías knew was at least out of date by 50 years, and that he and his crew had been wiped from the annuals of history in the time. A mix of anger, despair and perplexment overwhelmed Matías, and he began to falter.

  3. Returned to his ship by some nearby Merchants, he told his crew of the current situation, and much like he did, all the men present took the news... with a ''great'' mix of emotions. Betrayal, they had been betrayed and their memory scorned by the Castellonian Empire that they had given '''everything''' to serve. Father's and Husbands would return to families who no longer knew them, if they still remained at all, Sons having lost their parents long ago and with nothing, would be reduced to beggars and madmen when trying to explain their current station. It was Matías who presented them with a choice, they could try to return to a homeland that had forgotten them to people who no longer knew that they even existed, or they could build new lives in the New world, with the new ship upon which they stood at that very moment. He offered the same to the Ixtlan Beastmen in what Aztlanic he had learned in his captivity. The only thing that remained was to see who took him up on the offer, to forge a bright new destiny from the ashes of their former lives, and to live for the first time as truly free men.

  5. They were dead men now, but as they learned in Necuametl, being dead doesn't mean much in this world.
