- <futurama140> somiaj: i dont care about uefi, i just want to install debian on this POS lenovo and have it actually boot
- <Heston> why hasn't debian pulled EFI support from ubuntu?
- * lpalgarvio has quit ()
- <somiaj> Heston: debian has efi support and it works good. Debian just doesn't have live images that support it.
- <somiaj> !unetbootin
- <dpkg> UNetbootin (Universal Netboot Installer) allows creation of bootable USB drives for a variety of Linux distributions. http://unetbootin.sf.net/ Not recommended for use with Debian CD/DVD images, as it mangles the installer in cruel and unusual ways, resulting in hard to debug problems. Ask me about <hybrid images>, <usb install>, <win32diskimager>.
- <futurama140> HOLY SHIT. the stuff is actually **working** this time! Why is it that it has taken me 3 days of googling and posting on unix stackexchangge for someone to finally tell me just to use "CP" and not unetbootin???
- <somiaj> futurama140: if you read the installation guide it says this. Also the debian installers are a little bit better than the one on the live image, but if that live image works for you go for it (the only issue I see people have with the live images in some cases grub wont' install properly)
- <Heston> somiaj, any idea why?
- <Heston> or just not a priority
- * dtcrshr (~datacrush@0001af91.user.oftc.net) has joined #debian
- * gas (~gas@host55-138-dynamic.52-79-r.retail.telecomitalia.it) has joined #debian
- <somiaj> Heston: partly the debian-live team had a split a year (or so) ago and hasn't had enough resources/time to include new efatures in the live build
- <somiaj> Heston: Debian just really doesn't have a strong live enviroment. Debian has a lot of thigns going for it, a strong/robust live system isnt' one. Its live system is there, but it is kinda limited compared to other live distros out there.
- <Heston> there must be a lot of duplicated efforts between debian and ubuntu for livecds
- <somiaj> well when debian started providing live-cd's its goals where different. Debian wanted to provide a system to build live-enviroments (live-build) and then allow users to build custom live enviroments from their collection of packages on debian.
- <somiaj> so the focus was to create the build enviroment over just live cds, the the split of the debian-live team, and the project is mostly in matiance mode where new live enviroments are built but I haven't seen many new features added to the live-build
- <futurama140> somiaj: i'm using "graphical installer" and just came to an issue: it cant detect and mount cdrom: But i am using USB. I went back to the list of install steps, clicked on detect and mount cdrom, and this time it is working, it finished partitioning and is now installing. do you know what happened?
- <somiaj> while ubuntu and other places focused more on using live enviorments to showcase things.
- <futurama140> i dont care if i use a live image or not, i just dont know how to install without a GUI interface...
- <somiaj> futurama140: that 'cannot detect cdrom' is a common artifact to unetbootin. Mostly this happens because debian live images are already bootable and complete, but unetbootin tries to make them bootable doing its own thing. This thing messes with out the install system is expecting to work.
- <futurama140> so in the future i should do a full format of the USB before cp-ing the iso to the USB if i had had a previous unetbootin on the USB?
- <Heston> somiaj, ah that sounds really cool
- <somiaj> there is very little difference between the text and graphical install in debian-installer, one just uses a mouse to select things, the other's arrow keys.
- <somiaj> Heston: in theory, in practice the live system just isnt' as good as other places (unless you want to read though the docs and build your own custom one)
- * ol has quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
- <futurama140> Ok, so i really should just get the regular debian ISO... i need to check to find one that includes non-free with it.
- <somiaj> !firmware installer
- <dpkg> Debian-Installer is able to load additional <firmware>, by including it within installation media or supplying on removable media (e.g. USB stick, floppy). See http://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/amd64/ch06s04 . To include firmware within Debian <netboot> images, see http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/NetbootFirmware . See also <firmware images>.

- <futurama140> right, that's where i got the ISO i'm using from
- <futurama140> GRUB is finally installing
- <somiaj> also when using the live-image to install, it is better to boot it into the installer and install from that (sounds like what you are doing) over boot into the live image and then install from the live iamge
- <futurama140> yea, no longer going to use the live image for anything....
- <futurama140> i have no purpose for the live image, other than i'm a n00b and thought that would be the easiest way to do it

- <futurama140> I'm totally unprepared for debian distros, but having used ubuntu for the last couple years, and then having a friend of mine put debian on this system, i hqave found that debian is vastly more stable than ubuntu
- <somiaj> plus the offical installers have uefi support (though debian doens't have secure boot support out of the box...yet)
- <somiaj> debian goes through a much longer testing/bugfixing/release cycle and then doesn't change things once its done....side affect, packages don't have all the fancy new features, but this is a common attitude of people who use debian
- <somiaj> !sns
