  1. [9:43:33 PM] Mal: it seems like a lot of modern lyxaris would, being in a developed world with its own subcultures and a multitude of other races' worldviews to interact with, encounter a couple problems in getting in touch with their own comparatively weak roots. granted on the whole the lyxaris have a big empire with a lot going on, it's all very centralized, right? even on colony worlds, it'd be difficult to feel like you had a solid heritage of your own amongst other lyxaris. that could breed a strong sense of kinship among the species, which is good! but it could go the other way; those lyxaris that become distant from others would have their problems compacted, and would have a hard time finding more than superficial common ground to work with. plus, their history as a 'blank slate' race, arising directly from wild predatorial conflict in a very primal setting even in the midst of their developing technologies throughout the ages, would predispose them to a lot of trouble when it comes to developing traditions, mythos, or gestalt community practices. they're inclined to science and logic before myth and faith, of course, but it seems like given your latest exposition, it could cause a lot of lyxaris to feel spiritually lost...!
  2. [9:43:45 PM] Mal: i have a proposal counter to that but i would like your thoughts first
  3. [9:44:38 PM] Glyph: well
  4. [9:44:53 PM] Glyph: that's not incorrect, and lyxaris ever since their space age have been clamoring to fill the void with the cultures of other species
  5. [9:45:04 PM] Glyph: they didn't really know what they were missing until their space age truly began
  6. [9:45:22 PM] Glyph: part of the important selection process was for the empire to pick constituents that had very open religions or cultures, such that they could participate as well
  7. [9:47:02 PM] Glyph: lyxaris have been creating their own artistry using the practices of other species as a basis and inspiration for thousands of years now, so their own cultural roots are getting significantly more broad
  8. [9:47:39 PM] Glyph: they've learned so many new methods of expression in all that time that it's giving them a lot of avenues for that
  9. [9:49:52 PM] Glyph: so it's much less the case now, but it was a very big deal in their early space age
  10. [9:50:55 PM] Glyph: in fact
  11. [9:51:04 PM] Glyph: their lack of culture is also a huge point in some of their artistry and expression
  12. [9:51:12 PM] Mal: if i may
  13. [9:51:14 PM] Glyph: go on
  14. [9:51:23 PM] Mal: this might be when i should interject the proposal i typed up separately
  15. [9:51:26 PM] Mal: because it seems like!
  16. [9:51:30 PM] Mal: as usual we're on the same fuckin NOTE MATE
  17. [9:51:39 PM] Mal: i'd propose it be important in lyxaris culture to exercize the classic 'golden rule' in many parts of life, not only by treating others fairly and diplomatically, but by living among other species... individually. having lyxaris kids stay among various alien families to try their customs and see what they most identify with. if the lyxaris embrace their 'blank slate' origins, it could also be used philosophically: the idea that they are born Tabula Rasa and should fill themselves with good practice throughout the universe - without violating those cultures' tenants. they could view themselves, racially, as those meant to guard others but also to experience them through empathy and cooperation, and that each could find their niche among other societies. it's a more specific version of point blank 'freedom to practice what you want' and it makes it more active, too, giving them a general push but not a set goal or strict tenure of laws and prohibitions they're to follow religiously unless they so consent to doing just that
  18. [9:51:43 PM] Mal: - me five minutes ago
  19. [9:52:11 PM] Glyph: yes
  20. [9:52:21 PM] Glyph: that's pretty much exactly their deal
