  3. >Equestria
  4. >Land of friendship and kindness
  5. Yeah right
  6. >You sigh as you stare up at the starry midnight sky
  7. >You know better than that now
  8. >Life isn’t even close to being ok
  9. >Magic really is op
  10. >Your physical strength is lacking compared to earth ponies and even many pegasai
  11. >Dexterous hands are nothing compared to unicorn magic
  12. >All the ways you tried to rip off good old human inventions has been a bust
  13. >Either magic already did it better, or ponies wouldn’t see the need
  14. >That’s if you can even hold an audience with one at all these days
  15. >Ponies casually ignore you at best
  16. >Some will actively avoid you or find excuses to leave your presence
  17. >Those are the nicer ones
  18. >Most just throw things at you
  19. >So it’s no wonder you can’t get a job
  20. >You’ve been living in a cave out in the everfree for a while now
  21. >Your camping days as a boy scout have served you well enough
  22. >Only got sick of plants 5 times
  23. >In 2 years’ time, you’d say that’s not bad
  24. >All this time alone hasn’t been a good thing
  25. >It has let you think
  26. >Think far too much
  27. >Trying to find a point to keep going
  28. >You still haven’t found one
  29. >There’s been the little things of course
  30. >Side projects that never actually amounted to much
  31. >Even once completed
  32. >A rush of accomplishment, quickly dying out with nobody to share it with
  33. >The log cabin-esque front entrance into your cave
  34. >The chairs
  35. >The table
  36. >The bed/hammock
  37. >The paintings of beautiful places you’ve seen
  38. >The woven doormat saying “Welcome”
  39. >Sure you’ve had to go dumpster diving for some of the supplies and tools
  40. >In the dead of night
  41. >When nopony was awake to throw rocks
  42. >Last time you were there, you found a broken acoustic guitar
  43. >It seemed like a waste, so your last project was patching it back together
  44. >It took a lot of time, patience, and a little ingenuity
  45. >But you now have a reasonably decent sounding guitar on your hands
  46. >You think about playing it
  47. >You remember how much the ponies love their music
  48. >Too bad they’d chase you out as soon as you’d sit down to try and play
  49. >...
  50. >You remember when you first arrived
  51. >You spent so much effort even getting here, never mind that it was a one way trip
  52. >Celestia had been kind to let you stay in her kingdom
  53. >Ponyville had been the obvious choice
  54. >They seemed so nice at first
  55. >But the novelty wore off
  56. >Soon you were just a bother
  57. >Then a nuisance
  58. >Then nothing
  59. >Must have up and forgotten you by now
  60. >Haven’t seen a one in about 9 months
  61. >And now here you are
  62. >Leaning against an apple tree right next to the forest
  63. >All dressed up, washed and shaved (Can’t go out looking like a slob after all)
  64. >A guitar in your lap and a knife in your hands
  65. >Tonight was the night, you’d finally decided
  66. >No more pain, no more loneliness
  67. >…
  68. They really are beautiful here
  69. >You mutter to yourself, your head still turned up
  70. >Being out in the countryside in a world with almost no pollution made the sky look so filled with stars
  71. >Nothing familiar, but still far nicer to look at than anything you’d seen back on earth
  72. >You hold your gaze for a time
  73. >After a while, you finally turn you head to the knife in your hand
  74. >And the guitar
  75. >You’re still not sure why you pulled it out here
  76. >Who would even be there to listen?
  77. >The sky?
  78. >The wind?
  79. >…
  80. >You?
  81. >…
  82. Ha. Why not
  83. >You mumble to yourself with a sad smile
  84. >Might as well go out with one last song
  85. >What to play…?
  86. >You think for a moment
  87. >Your smile grows bigger for a moment when the idea comes
  88. >It’s so dumb
  89. >But somehow it feels right to you
  90. >People would call you a faggot, but what do you care now
  91. >You take a moment to get the first notes
  92. >Then you play
  93. >…
  94. >…
  95. >A final glance at the vast expanse of stars is the last thing you grant yourself
  96. >You take the knife and slash at your wrists, sure to cut deep
  97. >Almost immediately you feel light headed
  98. >Sounds dull around you, as does your sight as you gaze lazily at the stars
  99. >The blood loss is getting to you fast
  100. >With a yawn, you close your eyes and lay limp against the tree
  101. >Wonder what the afterlife will be like?
  102. >…
  103. >Guess you’ll see
  104. >…
  105. >…
  106. ----A FEW MINUTES EARLIER----
  107. >You are Applejack
  108. >Something has been keeping you up
  109. >Just one of those nights you suppose
  110. >A walk around the orchard ought to do some good
  111. >A clear night like this always does good
  112. >You look up at Luna’s night sky
  113. >Such a pretty sight
  114. >You don’t think Princess Luna gets enough compliments on it
  115. I oughtta write to her tomorrow…
  116. >You absent mindedly declare
  117. >Your thoughts are halted when a sound rang out from the edge of the orchard
  118. >Curious, you walk towards it
  119. >As you get closer, you start to see a shape next to one of the apple trees
  120. >It subtly moves and the sound comes again
  121. >This time as a hauntingly calm melody
  122. What in tarnation..?
  123. >The sounds stop
  124. >But only for a moment
  125. >Then the singing begins
  126. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zLfCnGVeL4 [Remove]
  127.
  128.
  129. >Something about it is hauntingly sad, but somehow beautiful
  130. >You can only stand in awe as the pony keeps playing
  131. >When they do stop, you head over to them
  132. >As you get closer the figure moves and you see more of who it is
  133. >It has long arms with hands at the end of them
  134. >Too small a frame to be a minotaur
  135. >…
  136. >Hey isn’t that the critter that moved in a while ago?
  137. >You haven’t seen him in a long while
  138. >Wonder where he’s be-
  139. >Oh god what’s he doing?!
  140. >He has a knife, and...
  141. >Oh no
  142. Stop! Please stop!
  143. >You shout as you run to close the distance
  144. >But you’re too late
  145. >You see the shape of the blade running hard against the arm
  146. >What must be blood dripping down
  147. >You keep shouting, but it has no effect
  148. >As you get closer and closer, you see his eyes start to close
  149. Oh no ya don’t sugarcube!
  150. >But the eyes still close
  151. >You finally reach him where he sits still, leaning against the tree with pools of blood forming where his hands lay in the dirt
  152. Stay with me partner, please
  153. >You whisper as you try to think of what to do
  154. >In an instant a plan arrives
  155. >You rip two strips from the shirt and quickly tie them around the cuts
  156. >Then you throw him over your back
  157. >And turn to the orchard gates
  158. >Not far past them would be the hospital
  159. Thank Celestia they’re open at night
  160. >You murmur to yourself as you run
  161. >You hope you’re fast enough…
  162. >…
  163. ----Later----
  164. *Beep*
  165. >What is that noise?
  166. *Beep*
  167. >You try to think back
  168. *Beep*
  169. >You were...
  170. *Beep*
  171. >Oh yeah
  172. *Beep*
  173. >You had slit your wrists at the base of a tree in the far corner of the orchard
  174. *Beep*
  175. >Why the beeping?
  176. *Beep*
  177. >Did…
  178. *Beep*
  179. >Did someone save you?
  180. >…
  181. >You drown out the beeping and try to focus on your senses
  182. >You are laying down on something
  183. >Likely a bed
  184. >You try to move your legs
  185. >Then your arms
  186. >Then your fingers
  187. >All systems respond
  188. >Everything is sore
  189. >You listen past the beeps
  190. >There’s some ambient noise of birds from outside
  191. >Faint sounds of footsteps can be heard a ways away from you
  192. >Are you in a hospital?
  193. >You take a deep breath
  194. >…
  195. >Yep
  196. >That’s the smell of a hospital room alright
  197. >You slowly open your eyes, wincing first at the light
  198. >You are met with a plain grey ceiling
  199. >You try to think of how you got here
  200. >Did you wake back up on earth?
  201. >Was it all a coma dream?
  202. >…
  203. >That might be nice…
  204. >You feel a twitch at the side of the bed
  205. >“ ’s gonna… …. right…”
  206. >A voice mumbles incoherently
  207. >With more effort than you’d like, you roll your head over
  208. >To your great surprise, you see none other than Applejack
  209. >Sleeping at the side of the hospital bed, looking a little worse for wear
  210. >You can’t fathom what she’s doing here
  211. >Did she…
  212. >Drag you here?
  213. >…
  214. >Your thoughts falter as the orange pony stirs again
  215. >This time opening her eyes
  216. >They lock with yours
  217. >…
  218. >For a moment, silence reigns
  219. >You just with a blank stare in your eyes
  220. >Her with a hopefulness in hers
  221. >Finally you break the silence with a raspy whisper
  222. Why?
  223. >With only a second’s pause, she replies
  224. >“I heard yer song… It was so… sad”
  225. >She pauses for a moment
  226. >You wonder how much of it she had heard
  227. >And why she bothered to listen
  228. >“I guess… I never thought to see how you were doin…”
  229. >She starts
  230. >You look at the pony questioningly
  231. >You had the rather distinct impression that nopony cared
  232. But…
  233. >You start to rasp
  234. >“Oh! Here sugarcube”
  235. >Applejack hooves over a glass of water from a bedside table
  236. >You feebly reach up to take it
  237. >As you do, you get a glance at your arms
  238. >Both are covered in bandage wrap from tour elbow to your hand
  239. >You guzzle the sweet fluids down, lessening the dryness
  240. Thanks
  241. >You almost whisper
  242. >Applejack nods, then continues
  243. >“I can’t help but feel so wrong for not even noticing. Looking back, you had been avoiding everypony before you… disappeared.”
  244. >She softly stated
  245. More like they avoided me…
  246. >You mumbled
  247. >She didn’t seem to hear it though
  248. >She was staring right into your eyes
  249. >She looked almost... ashamed
  250. >“I’m so sorry”
  251. >Sorry
  252. >Hmm
  253. >Your snort a little at that
  254. >She couldn’t know what it was like
  255. >Living the way you did
  256. >You are about to make a retort when the door at the end of the room opens up and a white pony with a pink mane walks in
  257. >“Oh! I see you’re awake. Applejack, could you leave us for a moment? I need to ask our patient some questions”
  258. >Applejack looks at the nurse, then back to you
  259. >She hesitates
  260. >Then replies
  261. >“Sure thing Nurse Redheart.”
  262. >She gets on all fours as she slides off the bed
  263. >She starts to go, but stops
  264. >She looks like she wants to say something, but stops
  265. >“I’ll be outside”
  266. >She tells Redheart
  267. >She throws a last glance at you
  268. >“You should sing more.”
  269. >She half whispers at you, then turning and walking out
  270. >…
  271. >The door closes
  272. >“Well now Mr.… I’m going to have to ask you a few questions…”
  273. >It’s been a week and a half
  274. >You had spent 3 days in a coma-like sleep
  275. >You stayed in the hospital for a few more days
  276. >Applejack visited you a few times
  277. >She even brought your guitar
  278. >It had some bloodstains on it where you held the neck
  279. >After being let out, she insisted on walking you home
  280. >She was surprised as you lead her into the everfree, but she didn’t say anything
  281. >Until you made it to the door
  282. >“Home sweet home”
  283. >You bitterly remarked
  284. >Applejack seemed stunned into silence
  285. >She followed you in, eyes wandering over all your creations
  286. >“You… built all this yourself?”
  287. >You simply nodded in response
  288. >You haven’t said much since waking up at the hospital
  289. >But Applejack had kept near when she could
  290. >You feel like it might mean something
  291. >Maybe at least this pony would keep you company
  292. >You see that the water jugs had filled while you were gone, so you make some tea
  293. >Aj stayed silent for a time, marveling at your paintings
  294. >“All this time… and I never knew….”
  295. >She muttered to herself
  296. >She finished her tea then got up
  297. >“I have to go back to the farm”
  298. >She stated softly
  299. >You didn’t respond
  300. >Though your shoulders slumped a bit
  301. >“Can I come by tomorrow?”
  302. >She asked, a spark of hope in her inquiry
  303. >You smile at this
  304. >Could you bring a pie? It’s been… a long time
  305. >You reply
  306. >A soft smile emerges on her face as well
  307. >“Sure thing, sugarcube”
  308. >She declares
  309. >You show her out the door, guitar in hand
  310. >Something changed
  311. >You felt… optimistic again
  312. >As she walks away, you grab a chair and sit outside with the guitar
  313. >And you begin to play
