- Hey guys. Thanks again for the show and your willingness to help out
- n00bs like me in the community!
- So I built my own FreeNAS box with an A1SRI-2558F-O Supermicro
- motherboard (Atom server-grade but only 4 core), 32 GB of RAM, 2
- mirrored SSDs to boot, and the same Supermicro tower case that the
- FreeNAS mini uses with four WD red 3 TB drives in the hot swap bays).
- It is working really well but I have one issue and one question. The
- question first:
- Q. if I do a digital ocean droplet with block storage and then zfs
- send my dataset to it, how can I ensure the data is encrypted (ala
- tarsnap) before it leaves my network so that even if someone big and
- smart were able to read the data on that "out of my network" box, they
- couldn't decrypt it? Is having it encrypted on my freeNAS and then
- doing a zfs send to the remote sufficient for that need?
- Now for the problem
- P. I bought a HighPoint Rocket (not RocketRaid) 640L controller for
- this setup and I keep getting SMART errors. However, when I actually
- ssh into the box and check the SMART status of the drives, there isn't
- a problem. Furthermore, the zpool shows zero errors. From sniffing
- around online it seems like people in this situation typically try a
- different SATA controller. The motherboard only supports two 6.0
- speed SATA connectors (which I'm using to run the mirrored SSD boot
- drives) so I want an external card. What would you recommend in the
- $100 - $200 range? Also, any tips on making sure that my drives show
- up on the same interfaces or does that even matter with ZFS?
- Thanks,
- Bryan
