  1. SHI KONG XING SHOU (時空星獸) DEX
  2.
  3. #NUMBER - Chinese name (transliteration in pinyin/拼音, "rough translation")
  4. TO DO 50
  5. #1 -暴躁猴 (Bàozào hóu, "Irascible monkey")
  6. ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 個性暴躁易怒,生氣時會卯起來亂打。
  7. PINYIN: Gèxìng bàozào yì nù, shēngqì shí huì mǎo qǐlái luàn dǎ.
  8. ROUGH TRANSLATION: "Irritable personality, will d up swatting angry." (NOTE: 卯起來/mǎo qǐlái means "charge power"/"use the full power" according to one native Chinese speaker, therefore "d up" is wrong)
  9. #2- 綠巨人 (Lǜ jùrén "[[(The Incredible) Hulk]/[Green giant]]") (NOTE: This could either be a reference to Marvel Comics' The Incredible Hulk (since Hulk's official Chinese name, which is also 綠巨人, literally translates to "green giant"), General Mills' Green Giant mascot, or it could just be a generic giant that just so happens to be green.)
  10. OD: 身高九尺八寸,力大無窮,外型憨厚老實。
  11. PI: Shēngāo jiǔ chǐ bā cùn, lì dà wúqióng, wài xíng hānhòu lǎoshí.
  12. RT: "Nine feet eight inches (9'8") tall, mighty, good honest honest."
  13. #3- 鐵拳蛙 (Tiěquán wā, "[Tekken/Iron fist] frog]") (NOTE: "鐵拳/Tiěquán" might be a reference to Namco's Tekken series of arcade fighting games from Japan, which are quite popular in the Greater Chinese fighting game tournament community. The first game was released in arcades in 1994. Of note that the series was also subject to bootleg "ports" made in Greater China for the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, even if the series has never reached those consoles officially (and in fact was more subject to official ports to Sony, Microsoft, and more rarely newer-gen Nintendo consoles). At the time Shi Kong Xing Shou was released in 2001, the 4th main installment of Tekken (6th overall counting the first arcade Tekken Tag Tournament and the Japan-only Wonderswan spinoff game Tekken Card Challenge) was being released in the arcades at around the same time. This monster might be inspired by Roger from Tekken 2, an anthropomorphic fighting kangaroo with boxing gloves. Also possibly (to a lesser extent) based on Gon's unlockable playable guest appearance in the PS1 version of Tekken 3, a short dinosaur that also has boxing gloves in-game (this appearance is based on a pantomime Japanese-made manga also called Gon), although this is less likely. Although 鉄拳(Japanese) and 鐵拳(Chinese) can more literally mean "iron fist" in English, the combination of the two kanji/hanzi is more commonly used to refer to the Tekken series of video games as a whole. Interesting considering that there is going to be a highly-anticipated Pokemon arcade fighting game called Pokken Tournament that's going to be released very soon...)
  14. OD: 擅長使用拳擊,常趁人不注意時,給予敵人致命的一拳。
  15. PI: Shàncháng shǐyòng quánjí, cháng chèn rén bù zhùyì shí, jǐyǔ dírén zhìmìng de yī quán.
  16. RT: "Good use of boxing, and often take advantage of people do not pay attention, to give the enemy a fatal blow."
  17. #4- 橡皮管 (Xiàngpí guǎn, "[(Rubber) Hose]/[Eraser tube]")
  18. OD: 全身由橡膠製成,即使斷裂也可以立刻再生。
  19. PI: Quánshēn yóu xiàngjiāo zhì chéng, jíshǐ duànliè yě kěyǐ lìkè zàishēng.
  20. RT: "The body is made of rubber, even if broken and to be regenerated once."
  21. #5- 金剛獸 (Jīngāng shòu, "[Diamond/'King Kong'/Adamantyl] Beast)
  22. OD: 以金剛不壞之身而聞名,弱龀在眼睛上方。
  23. PI: Yǐ jīngāng bù huài zhī shēn ér wénmíng, ruò chèn zài yǎnjīng shàngfāng.
  24. RT: "King Kong is not bad in itself is known for weak milk teeth at the top of the eye." (NOTE: check 金剛/"jīngāng" to see what it means in this context. "King Kong" is most likely wrong. Could mean "diamond, (figuratively) an object that is extremely hard and strong, (Buddhism) Vajra(pani)")
  25. #6- 粉紅娘 (Fěnhóng niáng, "Pink mother")
  26. OD: 個性膽小,隨時都在尋找可以隨身保護的人。
  27. PI: Gèxìng dǎn xiǎo, suíshí dōu zài xúnzhǎo kěyǐ suíshēn bǎohù de rén.
  28. RT: "Timid personality, always looking for people who can carry protection."
  29. #7- 青草精 (Qīngcǎo jīng, "Fine grass")
  30. OD: 出生於青青草原,擁有操縱閃電的力量。

  44. RT: "For many years lived in caves, have the ability to listen to the sound discernible bits."
  45. #11- 紅豬 (Hóng zhū, "Red pig/[Porco Rosso]") (NOTE: 紅豬 is also the official Taiwanese Chinese name for Hayao Miyazaki's 1992 Japanese-animated film Porco Rosso, or 紅の豚/Kurenai no Buta (lit. Crimson Pig). It's likely to be a coincidence, since 紅豬 literally means "red pig", and that's what the sprite looks like without any further connection to the movie, but you never know with bootleg programmers)
  46. OD: 怨恨所有事物,已經殘暴到見人就殺的地步。
  47. PI: Yuànhèn suǒyǒu shìwù, yǐjīng cánbào dào jiàn rén jiù shā dì dìbù.
  48. RT: "Resentment of all things, has been brutal to the point of telling anyone to kill."

  52. RT: "Immortal rare beast, the legendary long seen his side will live forever."
  53. #13- 赤鍊 (Chì liàn, "Dinodon rufozonatum", "Lycodon rufozonatus", "Asian king snake", "Banded red snake", "Red banded krait", "Red banded odd-toothed snake", "Red-banded snake", "Red chain (literal translation)" (NOTE: this monster's name seems to be based on a species of venomous snake (called "赤鍊蛇/Chì liàn shé" in Chinese) found in East Asia, especially in eastern China (hence all the "common names" listed above))
  54. OD: 上古時期的生物,身體的鱗片已經進化成了尖刺。
  55. PI: Shànggǔ shíqí de shēngwù, shēntǐ de línpiàn yǐjīng jìnhuà chéngle jiān cì.
  56. RT: "Biological, physical scales in ancient times has evolved into spines."
  57. #14- 噴火龍 (Pēnhuǒ lóng, "[Spitfire]/[Fire-breathing]/[Fire-spraying]/[Flame]/[Eruption] dragon", "Charizard(!)") (NOTE: 噴火龍 is also the official Chinese name for the gen 1 Pokemon called "Charizard" (or "リザードン/Rizādon (official romanization is Lizardon)" in the original Japanese versions), and this is most definitely NOT a coincidence, given which series of games that Shi Kong Xing Shou bases its engine from. 噴火龍 is used in all the individual Chinese dubs of the long-running Pokemon anime series (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan), and all Chinese localizations of any manga based on the franchise. The Pokemon games never got official Chinese translations approved by Nintendo or its mainland Chinese subsidary iQue (except the first Super Smash Bros), but fan translations for almost all of them of nearly-professional quality exist.)
  58. OD: 口中所噴出的火燄足以熔化所有武器。

  64. RT: "Usually a pool of lava, the attack will show his true colors."
  65. #16- 赤火狐 (Chì huǒhú, "Red fire fox") (NOTE: despite what you might think, this is NOT an intentional reference to the Mozilla Firefox web browser, despite the fact that Greater Chinese netizens sometimes informally refer to Firefox as "火狐/Huǒhú". Firefox's first public testing version wouldn't even be released until September 23, 2002, approximately a whole year after Shi Kong Xing Shou was supposedly released, and even then, the browser wouldn't even gain its current Firefox name until February 9, 2004 (the project went through several name changes before settling on its final name, it's a long story that's not for here))
  66. OD: 尾巴上燃燒的火焰是它生命的象徵。沒有火苗速度便會減弱。
  67. PI: Wěibā shàng ránshāo de huǒyàn shì tā shēngmìng de xiàngzhēng. Méiyǒu huǒmiáo sùdù biàn huì jiǎnruò.

  70. OD: 附身於蠟燭的精靈,常被誤認為是鬼影。
  71. PI: Fù shēn yú làzhú de jīnglíng, cháng bèi wùrèn wéi shì guǐ yǐng.
  72. RT: "Candles possessed in spirit, is often mistaken for a ghost."
  73. (NOTE: Zhuyao: 2001. Litwick: 2010. Who are the real pirates, Nintendo?)
  74. (NOTE: 精靈/"jīnglíng" (and by extension, its Japanese shinjitai kanji equivalent 精霊/"seirei") can actually mean several things depending on the context due to how Asian cultures and folklore can be completely different from European culture (eg. Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru (Yuki Yuna is a Hero)'s Crunchyroll subtitles refer to their 'seirei's as 'fairies'). In fact, the Pokemon franchise's official Mainland Chinese name (精灵宝可梦/Jīnglíng bǎo kě mèng) uses its simplified form 精灵 in its title. On topic, the intended meaning in the description's context is probably 'spirit')
  75. #18- 焱爐妖 (Yàn lú yāo, "Flame 'furnace/oven/stove' 'monster/demon')
  76. OD: 仙界煉丹爐幻化而成,爐中的高溫可煉出任何上等兵器。

  86. RT: "Fire the fastest who came and went without a trace."
  87. #21- 河童 (Hétóng, "Kappa"/"River child"/"Water demon") (NOTE: a kappa is a humanoid reptilian youkai in Japanese folklore that inhabit the local rivers and ponds. It is surprising that a Taiwanese developer would reference Japanese culture, seeing as normally only Japanese developers do that, and Greater Chinese media are often more focused on their own culture and mythology (mainly ancient stuff from what would become present-day People's Republic of China) than any other areas'. It is possible that the kappa got slightly more well known and popular in Greater China (at least more than America and Europe at the time) through Japanese anime and manga that got imported/exported/subtitled/dubbed/translated/scanlated to that area. Doesn't help that Japanese comics are more popular than domestic ones in Taiwan. It could also be one of Vast Fame's attempts at giving the game's feel a Japanesque/animesque flavor, not too dissimilar from what other non-Japanese media companies from around the world were doing (with mixed results) at around the same time due to the whole anime craze)
  88. OD: 常假扮成渡船人,卻趁人不注意時,將人推入海中。

  122. RT: "Play sea eats children, had filmed Jaws 2 sets." (NOTE: please check to see if the explicit reference to Steven Spielberg's American 1975 film "Jaws" (and Jeannot Szwarc's 1978 follow-up "Jaws 2") is intentional, since 大白鲨/"Dà bái shā" is Jaws' official Chinese title. I have a feeling that Vast Fame's reference was intentional, and one chat friend who lives in the PRC seems to agree. Then again, 大白鲨 can also super-literally mean "great white shark" (nearly all official Chinese-translated titles of non-Chinese media, especially Western movies and shows, sound utterly generic or flat-out awkward when translated back into English). Either way, Vast Fame obviously didn't give author Peter Benchley (who was still alive by Shi Kong's release) nor Universal Studios any money to use the movie's name in this context.)

  377. (NOTE: there is a Chinese typo in this entry. There are two possibilities: 1: whoever typed this message must have messed up and reversed the hanzi order of "性格/xìnggé" as "格性/géxìng"; 2: that same typist must have meant to type "個性/gèxìng" through a computer's Chinese keyboard IME program, but instead mistakenly converted "ge" as "格/gé" rather than "個/gè" . In either case, both words "性格" and "個性" have an English definition of "personality", so both possibilities are plausible, and the corrections are interchangable with very little difference in context (個性 means personality, 性格 is one's nature or disposition). A PRC resident and a #mandarin IRC chat member has confirmed this typo)

  436. #106- 咕嚕妖 (Gūlǔ yāo, "'Gollum/grunt/gurgl(e/ing)/rumble 'demon/monster'") (NOTE: according to official translations of the Lord of the Rings books by British author J.R.R. Tolkien, 咕嚕/"Gūlǔ" is Gollum's Chinese name. It is possible that the LotR reference is intentional, seeing as the trilogy and The Hobbit have some popularity in Greater China, Vast Fame would later develop a (currently undumped) GBA game called 魔戒奇兵/"Mó jiè qí bīng" that is essentially a clone of Pocky & Rocky/KiKi KaiKai clone with playable LotR characters, and the game was released at around the same time that Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Fellowship of the Ring was still being hyped in 2001. But then again, 咕嚕 can also have contexts that have absolutely nothing to do with the famous fantasy novel series, such as gurgling, grunting, or rumbling (the below description of the monster seems to support this theory). And the monster's resemblance in question has a very thin connection with any depictions of Gollum. If anything, he looks like a certain Betelgeusian we might know of if he was dipped in blue goop, even if that alien wouldn't make an appearance until 13 years later)

  464. #113- 泰山 (Tàishān, "Taishan (Mountain)"/"Mount Tai"/"Tarzan") (NOTE: given the sprite, the name is most likely supposed to literally mean American author Edgar Rice Burroughs' (absolutely still trademarked even in 2015 even though the original story is public domain) "Tarzan" character. Shi Kong Xing Shou was released two years after Disney's Tarzan film, and one year before Square/Disney's Kingdom Hearts' PS2 release, both of which had to pay Burroughs' estate royalties and give them a separate credit to use the Tarzan name. Vast Fame, being an unlicensed 'bootleg' game developer in Taiwan, did not give Burroughs' surviving family any money to use Tarzan's name. Though it is entirely possible that due to differing copyright/trademark laws, the fact that Tarzan's trademark is in the US and applied to his English-language name only, and the original 1912 story is in the public domain, it's entirely possible that it's technically legal to use Tarzan's Chinese name without permission in Taiwan)

  640. (NOTE: I think Shi Kong Xing Shou's title is derived from an obscure 1998 Japanese mon genre show owned by Sanrio called 時空探偵ゲンシクン (Jikuu-Tantei Genshi-Kun, lit. Space-Time Detective Genshi-kun), or as the 2000 Americanized English dub calls it, Flint the Time Detective. More specifically, the name the show's Chinese dub gave for their "time shifters" (or "jikuu-monsters/space-time monsters" in the original Japanese audio), which is 時空'怪'獸 (shi kong 'guai' shou, lit. space-time 'strange' beasts), a one-hanzi difference away from 時空'星'獸 (shi kong 'xing' shou, lit. space-time 'star' beasts). Considering that the Chinese dub of Flint the Time Detective aired on Taiwanese television and later released on 20-disc Video CD a few years before Vast Fame's mon game hit the store shelves, it may or may not be coincidence (especially considering the general obscurity of Flint the Time Detective, and the fact that the show handled collecting monsters in a way that set it apart from Pokemon/Digimon/other mon genre contenders). Keep in mind that the show itself is called 時空偵探 (Shikong Zhentan, lit. Space-Time Detective) in Taiwan. Some debating to think about, I dunno, I just remembered that the show even existed after more than a decade. It might seem like a really thin connection anyway, and this might require corroboration from one of the programmers should they eventually "come out of their shell" and speak up, but you never know with bootleg developers. It is definitely possible that one of the 12 people involved in this project has seen the show's Chinese dub while it was on television and (un?)intentionally (and subconsiously?) derived an idea or two from there)
  641. Here's a quick comparison for translations of a line Professor Yamato (Dr. Bernard Goodman in the English dub) said about the time shifters in the first episode:
  642. Rough translation of original Japanese taken from Ancient Legends Fansubs: "Probably a 'time-space monster' that I've heard about"
  643. Chinese dub (and pinyin) according to hardcoded subtitles from official Taiwan VCD: "這個可能就是傳說中經常聽到的'時空怪獸'吧。(Zhège kěnéng jiùshì chuánshuō zhōng jīngcháng tīngdào de shíkōng guàishòu ba.)" (this is a close Chinese translation of the Japanese original)
  644. The same line according Saban's English dub: "Hmmm, I haven't seen one before, but my guess would be that little flyer [Getalong] is a '[time] shifter'" (words in brackets aren't actually spoken, but implied)
