Updating a DRM free version is a far lengthier process that would cost us too much time if we were updating the game several times a day. Perhaps even daily. Meaning we would hold off on pushing out any updates until a few have built up and push larger updates out all at once.

Updating via steam lets us quickly and easily push updates to everyone, so we could update as and when new content is finished.
