  13. School's Teaching Ideology: "Independence and Autonomy"
  14.
  15. To the fledgling students, your three years in high school are an invaluable time to prepare you to fly on your own into the future. In preparation for entering society, your school life will have you undergo many experiences in order to learn how to turn your mistakes into the strength to move forward. No matter how marvelous the wisdom and skills you cultivate, it will be meaningless if you don't have the will to use them properly. The founding ideal of our school is "independence and autonomy", and as such I encourage you to think for yourselves, and myself wish to provide the proper environment both at school and at home for you to all grow and learn together.
  16.
  17. School as your city
  18. Following the ideal of independence and autonomy, we have turned this school into a microcosm of society, and for our students to undergo as many experiences as possible, we have prepared a wide array of tools and equipment for you all to use.
  19. Megugaoka Academy High School is a city unto itself, and as the students are its citizens, we allow for you all to practice many jobs to master self-support and self-sufficiency.
  20.
  21. Education to raise the next generation
  22. The core ideal of independence and autonomy does not change as the ages do, but the skills you will need do. In this age of relying on scholastic history and past employment, one's individual wit must be put to full use, not to mention the necessity of being able to survive with others.
  23. Here at Megugaoka Academy High School, we try to instill real world skills that allow you to brave the stormy seas of the world.
  24. On behalf of all of our faculty, I welcome those of you reading this pamphlet to our school.

  30. School History
  31. Surrounded by Megugaoka City's History
  32.
  33. Megugaoka Academy High School has long resided in S Prefecture's Megugaoka City, which long ago was named Danto {pronounciation not clear to me}, and was loved by its residents who lived surrounded by nature. Danto City was spoken of in much folklore and called "Land of the Snake God", and more recently "Little Fierce Deity Area" in some books {names translated for clarity}. Looking overseas, Professor H from K University compared Danto with the islands of West India, and noted that there may have indeed been an exchange of culture between the two.
  34. Ever since that terrible event in 1968, measures were put in place in an attempt to restore the falling population in Danto. Starting in 1979, the name was changed to Megugaoka City, and an effort was made to attract businesses which has lead to its current prosperity.
  35. The city and academy's name, Megugaoka, comes from the undulating terrain, as well as the seven hills of pilgrimage in Rome in the hopes that it too would flourish in culture.

  49. Introduction of Facilities
  50. At this city in a school, for the students to be able to experience all of society, we have gathered all the necessary facilities.
  51.
  52. Vegetable Garden
  53. In the spirit of independence and autonomy, we have decided that you must first start with food, and we have built two vegetable gardens, one on the roof and one on the outside grounds, in addition to a contracted farm outside the school to foster a unique environment.
  54. They are mainly used for extracurricular activities and by the horticulture club such that students themselves learn to grow and harvest their own food. Some of the food is cooked and eaten on the grounds, and the rest is sold and labeled as Megugaoka grown produce.
  55. Pictured: Vegetables bathed in sunlight
  56.
  57. Clean Water Facilities
  58. In addition to food, water is necessary for survival. On school grounds, water from Wicked River {name translated} or groundwater is pulled and purified with on-site equipment, part of which is used for drinking water or pool water. The purification equipment is self-powered, and is located in places that will be safe from any potential disaster.
  59.
  60. Electricity Facilities
  61. In addition to food and water, electricity is needed in our modern society. There are solar panels on the roof, two water mills connected to Wicked River, all of which are used to power the school. The Student Council sells the excess water and electricity for savings for the Conquering Dragon Festival, and the students learn naturally through their lives here how precious electricity is.
  62.
  63. Computer Room
  64. In our internet society, computers are not simply a tool for learning, but also a weapon as well as a dangerous tool, and also a means to protect oneself. From even before the Internet, our school has used computers
  65.
  66. Page 6:
  67. and now uses the most cutting-edge technology.
  68. In our constantly updated computer rooms, the students learn not simply the basics of computing, but also net literacy and security.

  71. Home Economics Room
  72. Most vegetables taken from the garden are used in the home economics room and prepared for the student's tables.
  73. To that end, our home ec room has the newest, largest, and best facilities we can possibly prepare.
  74. In particular, every single kitchen on campus is fully stocked for the Conquering Dragon Festival.
  75.
  76. Emergency Storehouse
  77. A certain portion of the produce produced in the gardens are stored underground in our emergency storehouse. It contains rice and grains, as well as secret pickled foods. The dried plums that have been prepared as long as ten years ago with the secret recipes of the horticulture club are taken out only on very special occasions.
  78.
  79. Library
  80. Reflecting upon the ideal of independence and autonomy, the management of the library's large collection is left to the students of the library committee. There are many professional level textbooks stocked, and requests from students for new books are always followed, and even leisure books including manga make the library a popular place.
  81.
  82. School Store/ Horticulture Club
  83. Our school store has every school need imaginable, including handmade clothes by the sewing club and other handmade items, the profits of which are used to fund the clubs themselves. The horticulture club's vegetables that are used in the cafeteria is their pride and honor.
  84. Pictured: Our library contains everything from reference books to hobby books to practical how-to's.

  88. At Megugaoka Academy High school, in addition to the high level of academics, following the ideal of independence and autonomy there is a wide variety of extracurricular activities.
  89.
  90. Foreign Language Classroom
  91. To foster experiences of life in other countries, not simply English but also French, Chinese, and over 10 other language professors have been invited to teach in our classrooms.
  92.
  93. Extracurricular Lectures
  94. We sponsor many special lectures outside of what we offer in our classrooms, and every year many students make use of them.
  95. Over the year we invite many specialists, some of which have included a hobby robot making lecture as well as a short anime making lecture. A particularly popular one is our experience nature lecture, in which many students go to the Wicked River to catch and cook their own fish.
  96.
  97. Club Activities
  98. We also sponsor inter-school activities. Not simply athletic clubs, but also culture clubs such as the Guitar Club and Brass Band who hold charity concerts, and the Horticulture club which goes out to sell their own produce.
  99.
  100. Conquering Dragon Festival {I'm sorry about this mouthful, you know what I mean}
  101. The yearly festival held in October is the best place to witness the ideal of independence and autonomy, and could be said to be the entire point of creating this academy.
  102. The name of Conquering Dragon comes from the legend of a saint slaying a dragon during the time of Danto, and each year the Drama Club holds a play about the dragon conquering. Each year the explanation changes slightly, and it has high popularity both among students and visitors.
  103.

  105. Megugaoka Academy High School Song
  106. Atop the seven hills, a sword saint glimmering in the heavens, in the Wicked River a nine-headed poison spewing serpent
  107.
  108. Tears of blood rained down from the heavens during the seven day and seven night battle, engraved deep into the earth the remnants of fearful flames
  109.
  110. Day came to the seven hills, and you who have forgotten the saint, we shall hold in our hearts his blade as his descendants
  111.
  112. Let us go with courage in our hearts
  113. Let us go as citizens of Megugaoka

  127.
  128. There was someone who called that interesting, and took my vague image and said "That's it! That has to be it!". I met Chiba Sadoru-san who turned it into something real, and with the help of far more people than I can mention here, this book was finished.
